Latest update on the car...

Now my dad has offered to let me buy his Buick Regal from him. 2015, 25,000 miles. Excellent condition, of course. No accidents, lives in the garage. Still has a year left on the manufacturer's warrenty. He said I would just pay $5000 down and take over the payments on the loan.

I'm torn because it is a really nice offer, and the loan has two more years on it, so it's one two more years of car payments, albeit two years of higher car payments tthan I was planning, not to mention his car is super nice, but at the same time, I was looking forward to buying a brand new car myself, and I was looking to build some credit history myself since I'm not planning on renting a place when I do move out; I'm saving up and will buy a place outright.

Might just have to stop by the bank and talk through it with a financial advisor there.

That's a nice offer from your dad. But if it isn't what you want don't feel pressured. Sounds like you have a plan for what you want do what is best for that.

So, funny story.... When I was stationed at fort Bragg they had run out of housing on post so they put me up in this apartment right outside the gate. It was glorious, because I had a garden tub, and a couple spare rooms for my friends to stay in when they came to visit.

But I had a lot of trouble with the clothes dryer. It worked okay when I first got in, but grew less and less effective. Soon, I was having to dry a load of laundry six or seven hours before it would actually get dry. So I finally broke down and called maintenance who said they could come check it out the next day while I was at work.

So I get home from work, and on top of the dryer is a cake if dryer lint that was, I kid you not, at least six inches thick, and a note from the maintenance guy that said "you're lucky the building didn't catch fire. Please empty the dryer lint after every three loads" :hilarious::hilarious: I had only ever done laundry at the laundromat before so I had no idea there even was a dryer lint trap :banghead::banghead:

Oh my!
Yep, If I'm doin' the laundry (yes, I do laundry!) I clean the lint trap after every cycle.
Fortunately, our dryer is located on an exterior wall, so it vents directly straight out the back for the rest of the carp the trap doesn't catch.
Some neighbors we had years ago had theirs on an interior wall, so it had a 90 degree turn directly behind it to travel about another 6' to vent out an exterior wall. They cleaned the lint trap regularly, but, they still had issues with the stuff the trap didn't catch getting clogged up in the direct turn behind the dryer in the vent to the outside. They didn't even know this until I got a phone call (back when we still only had a landline :hilarious:) from them one Saturday morning 'cause their dryer stopped drying, and they wanted me to take a look at it. I knew sometimes the heating element could just go out, and that can be replaced, and costs nowhere near what a new dryer costs. :cyclops:
I pulled it away from the wall, and pulled the vent tube off. when I reached in there I pulled out a ton of lint. Sure enough, the lint clog had overheated the heating element and burned it out. We went and got the part and replaced it, and I sliced into my hand a bit getting to it and replacing it, and still have the scars to prove it.
Oh well, it saved them some money, and they actually had a situation where they were able to spend the money to reposition the dryer to an exterior wall...! :geek:

The scars, from umpteen years ago...!!!

And, yep, the fire threat is also very real.

Wow. Do they still offer those discounts to CM's? If there was a Disney Store within 30 minutes of here, I would be bum-rushing the door for those benefits.:D Alas, our only stores are in outlet centers an hour or more away.:(

I've read since last night the ones at other Disney places of employment have been reduced, so I have to assume the Disney Store ones have, as well, but, have no clue by how much, or what may have been eliminated altogether.

Yikes! Saving is one thing, but it sure doesn't sound like you were making minimum wage back then?!!! :jawdrop::)

Yeah but I am old-ish anyhow. You have to remember what a new car cost in 1984, my Mustang was if I am recalling correctly brand new about $6000.00 Now likely a minimum of $30,000. Gas was 50 cents a gallon. CPI of yesteryear minimum wage to today's money is almost $10 /hour. But I don't believe I ever worked for minimum wage, I know babysitting I likely doubled or tripled minimum wage. I didn't have my own car until I was out of college and I didn't have any overhead aside from the fun things in life.

Condo's were popular back then and they were economical. My house well I just sold my house for slightly less four times what I paid for it and that house was paid off completely in 12 years. That said I held both a full time career job and a completely different part time job at least 24 hours a week at. So minimum I worked 64 hours a week. I worked my butt off for everything I had on my priority list as a young adult. My DD currently has a full time career, still works part time at the pool on her days off and is an instructor of trainers to certify lifeguards, beyond that has a small business of her own. This week she also starts Grad School. When we are young we all tend to just work so hard to achieve our goals. Now if I tried to do all I did way back then I'd likely collapse. :joyfull:

That's nice, and very special that your ex-BIL sang it. I'm enjoying reading about all the interesting songs that some people here, had at their wedding. (Actually, we didn't have that type of reception--no band, no song, etc. )

We kept it small (approx. 30 people), and instead -- we splurged big time on the FOOD--all the guests were in hog heaven with the amazing food we had at the reception. :hungry: Chef was outstanding (I was working in the hotel business at that time, 24 years ago), and our executive chef really put on the DAWG for us!! People were raving about the food. Then, once the reception was over, we were on a plane to Las Vegas! :joyfull: Sometimes you gotta eat and run! :hilarious:

I had 250 people at our wedding which I had to pay for myself, Dad from birth made it clear he'd pay for college but not weddings for his daughters. Half way through that planning and outside opinions flying like tennis balls at me I said if I could get my money back on all those deposits I would cancel the Big Wedding and Reception and elope to Vegas. It was ultimately very nice but honestly our honeymoon in Disneyland for a few weeks was far more fun than the actual wedding and reception. It was also 103 degrees in a non air conditioned church at 3pm so that played into it also. :banghead:

Our song was Follow Me by John Denver. Sung by my best friend in his awesome tenor voice.
I danced with my Dad to Daddy's little girl and my Dad did not back off to allow my FIL to share that dance or song. Nope he wasn't having any of that. :joyfull:

And put away.

Homes were way cheaper in the 80’s and early 90’s. Wish I had the foresight to have thought about money and real estate the way @Gabe1 did at a young age. Pretty brilliant.

I give that credit to my Mom and her drumming that into my head from young with her stories of her youth. She didn't have an easy life being one of 12 children. She had a master plan so her kid(s) would live a better life than she did. I was to be an only child but I wound up with a younger sister. Sometime plans get altered. ;)

Compared to my day, believe me, this is resting. All went fairly well except that last piece of the original me did not go quietly into that good night. It took them an hour and fifteen minutes just to get the old lens out. My eye looks like it went a few rounds with Ali!

{{{HUGS}}} Rest up, golf season is just around the Frozen Tundra.

Actually...that is the standard model for all printers to test their quality and capabilities.

Its very similar to the famous Windows page print test for inkjet printers.
All the printers have that model loaded and ready to print in a usb or in the printer's memory for testing.

Cant you just sell that buick and pay the difference when you change it for a new car?
So your father gets the money for HIS car, and you get the car you wanted.

My son a wildly big fan of Big Willie right down to his favorite Magic Band his sister bought for him. He too has that same boat sitting in his office. Yep it is a standard preloaded give ya but he too loves it. They printed him up one when he changed offices as some of his art hung in his office is also Steamboat Willie and his staff deemed it seemed fitting for him as a welcome. As common as it is it is a special one for him as he loves Willie and a nice nod from his staff. His artwork in his office beyond SSE is Steamboat and Mickey Fantasmic though there is a great deal of Toy Story knickknack items in that office too. My manchild lives that Disney Life daily.

In his apartment it lends itself more to more subtle Lion King fine Lithographs. Cool warm colors, while Disney not in your face color more subdue that makes you look more deeply into the art. The one in his bedroom though I love is our Family Resort, where they grew up through POR resort. That resort has so many photo-graphical areas designed into that place. A quaint lovely place. So perfectly tranquil for a bedroom and taken by a great Disney photographer. Yep From Willie to Disney we are a Disney family.

Ugh. A 3 year old car is nice. Still warranty ending in a year oy. $5000 and 2 years of payments meh. Ying Yang. And yes you loose any form of credit building. Still the offer is nice but so was the GM credit card bonus. I'm at a loss not know what is better for you in the long run, a new car lasting longer and credit or a shorter term loan on an older car. Blah. Life is complicated. What kind of car is it?
