And youse guys complain about how much annual holiday time we get ... ;)
It is a federal holiday so banks, post office's, and schools are closed. Dh works and many businesses are open. President's Day is in a month. Like @MinnieM123 said, our "holidays" are usually just a day here and there. The schools here have also cut down on spring/Easter break. In our district they get Good Friday and then just the Monday after Easter off.

Another manager from my team walked over to my desk. Halfway through talking to me he asks, "Do you have a headache?"

I may as well wear a sign...
Sympathy like. I had a coughing fit at work last night that made everyone stare at me....I don't need a sign. Sounds like you don't either.

Funny story related to this. When ds was an infant and just starting baby food, we stopped off at a mall in Savannah on our way to Disney. Dd was playing in a play area there.. Kids needed some time out of the car. Anyway there was a mom there and she was asking about ds because her toddler wouldn't eat anything but baby food. I said ds just started to eat baby food,so we hadn't had that issue yet. That funny part is that ds loved this one flavor of Gerber. It was broccoli cauliflower puree. He could eat it all the time. I would give him other flavors and refused. Just wanted the broccoli cauliflower. He then wouldn't touch any non pureed food when he was able too when he was older. It was so hard to get him to eat anything solid. Finally one day we are at a sil's house and she made the kids buttered noodles. Hallelujah! :)Finally he eat something solid. Who would think that feeding a kid could be so stressful! @figmentfan423 has the opposite problem.;)
I know!! It's so tough!! There are a lot of parents out there who THINK their kid is a picky eater because they won't eat veggies. I'm like...THAT is not picky. Try finding something my kid will eat from somewhere other than McDonalds.

We never did the baby food thing; we just fed her soft foods off our dinner plate. It was good that we didn't because we would have run out of baby food too quickly. My daughter was and is a big eater. We've always joked that she's a trash panda (raccoon) because she'll rummage through any bag she finds (even strangers bags) to find snacks.

Even at the fireworks show at Magic Kingdom on Christmas, she found a family and made friends with them and proceeded to ask them for food :cautious::cautious:
I read that in your TR and it cracked me up! My kids definitely are not that big of eaters. My daughter was a bit picky for a couple of years, but once she hit 4, she started tasting more things and now she's a great eater, and she loves fruit and a few veggies. But both of my kids ate like birds when they were A's age!

If you want to see REALLY long lines.... visit the louvre!!
They can be avoided. There is a special line for Museum Pass holders and that line is practically non-existent. It's like fastpass on steroids. That was pretty much the only good thing about the museum pass.

There are wash n fold places but even though I'm not a fan of doing laundry, they're not quite worth the money IMHO
It can be a Godsend! When we were back for dad's funeral, I was having to run around making arrangements for things and I didn't have time to sit in a laundromat all day. I went to the laundromat, hoping I would be able to get enough washers to do all my loads at once and they had the service...it was SO nice. I just handed them our suitcases and came back that evening to pick them back up. I wouldn't use it just to avoid doing laundry at home, though.

By the time we load up the car get to the airport, get my older ds through security without freaking out and so on it's easier for us to drive. Besides we like having a car on vacation
I wish we could drive to Florida from here!! I miss our road trips we did when I was a kid. We got to see SO much more of the US than most kids do!

@Songbird76 I went to a butcher shop today and asked for pork shoulder (varkens schouder) to make pulled pork. The butcher cut me an 800gr piece that is marinating in the fridge as I type this. It wasn't very expensive either just €8.80.
Oh that's not bad at ALL! Thanks! I'll have to do that!
OUCH! It's much less expensive here. Even the ones my dh gets from the organic farm.
That's really not bad for here. The cost of living here is WAY more expensive than in most parts of the US. Even Germany is way cheaper than here. I know a lot of people here who cross the border to shop in Germany, because paying the price for gas is cheaper than paying for groceries here. And we do a lot of shopping when we go to the US. I basically bought a new wardrobe last time I was in the US. It was like buying everything half price or 75% off...and electronics...our first digital camery...I think we paid $230 for it at a Best buy, because we had priced them here and the same model would have cost us 400 euros.
I'm glad I'm vegan:D
Wouldn't help you here. 2 small ears of corn here cost me 2.78 euros...so more than $3. Meanwhile, in Wyoming, which doesn't even had the GOOD corn, or the best prices, It was $5 for 10 ears or something ridiculous like that. Produce here is just as expensive as meat, and we don't have NEARLY the selection that you do.

I think you kinda took my comment of an Egg Roll isn't an entree for a child out of context.

We were discussing specifically the Disney Dining Plan and the Kids Dining Plan at WDW not Egg Rolls from around the world. Sure Netherlands version of an Egg Roll that is too heavy to be picked up CAN be a meal but that is not what the Disney Dining Plan served to children, not even close. This is from the Disney Food Blog but it wasn't enough food for the 8 year old on the Dining Plan.

yak-and-yeti-egg-roll-inside-300x200.jpg

So how do the Dutch deep fry a an Egg Roll that is too heavy to lift? With that much stuffed into the wrapper of the egg roll I'd think it would fall apart or is the wrapper that much thicker in the Netherlands?
Sorry, I misunderstood. Did the eggroll not come with anything else? No rice or anything? Usually the kids meals come with something besides the main, whether it's a piece of fruit, or a vegetable.
And it's not the Dutch...it's a Chinese restaurant, run by a Chinese family. Not sure how they do it, but I would imagine it involves a large slotted spatula to pull it out of the oil. It wouldn't fit in that paper plate thing you have pictured there. I had never seen egg rolls that big until we got them from this restaurant. They are literally around the corner from my in-laws' house...so easy to get take out. I order sometimes when we stay with my in-laws' and my MIL makes something for dinner that I don't particularly like. And I don't think I have ever finished a whole egg roll by myself.

May? What about February--Presidents Day?!!

Schools generally close on Presidents day, but businesses don't. Which makes it one of my least favorite holidays, because I have to take a vacation day from work to accommodate it if my husband is out of town.

After this weekend, our next work holiday is May 28th for Memorial Day. Then July 4th. Then September third. So no holiday for almost 5 months, then one day every other month until Thanksgiving.

One of the boys asked me to do something last night and I said no. The quote was why not it's not like you work. I'm avoiding him for a while:angelic:

Extra shopping bags for him today! Load him down!

At the height of corn season, it's not uncommon to find 10 for $1 ears of corn at the super market. So.... ten cents each.

I give that credit to my Mom and her drumming that into my head from young with her stories of her youth. She didn't have an easy life being one of 12 children. She had a master plan so her kid(s) would live a better life than she did. I was to be an only child but I wound up with a younger sister. Sometime plans get altered. ;)
My mom was like that, too. She was AWESOME with money. She worked at First Federal in Dundee or Elgin...they bleed together for me. But her dad died when she was 2, and her mom struggled. Her brothers provided a lot for her, as they were so much older, and her oldest brother got her piano lessons and taught her to drive, etc. But she was so used to a shoestring budget, so when she and my dad divorced, she worked REALLY hard at various jobs, and became an expert coupon clipper and sale shopper to make ends meet. We were POOR, but we always had the necessities. And she always taught me about saving money as we were growing up...she always said never to make payments on things...save up until you have enough to buy it outright. You'll wait for a while, but you'll pay less. And she encouraged me to get one credit card in college when they bombard you with pre-approved offers, but, she said to only use it once a year for something I would need to buy anyway...like my books for my classes, and then pay it off right away. That's how you build credit without paying interest. She also said never to join all the accounts with your husband's....have SOMETHING in only your name. Otherwise, all the credit is attached to HIS name and should you divorce or something happens to him, you have no credit and can't get approved for anything. She held my wallet until I was in college so I couldn't buy something without asking. She never said no, just asked what it was for and if I was sure it was a good use of the money....would I still want that item in a month when the next big thing came along. When she passed, I got just enough money to cover my student loans...I didn't have much because I had tuition and fees scholarships, and I worked. So there wasn't much there, but I used the money from the estate to pay off my student loans and I was 25 years old and debt-free. My husband wanted to use the money for a vacation or something and I was like, nope...gonna pay off the debt so I won't have to pay interest.
And youse guys complain about how much annual holiday time we get ... ;)
How much Summer vacation do schools get there? We only get 6 weeks here, so we have more breaks built into the school year, but we get less overall vacation time than in the US.

That's exactly why I chose not to be a permanent employee at my job. I don't have set hours, so when it's not busy, I don't get much work, BUT I get to set my own availability. So I get to say "I can't work Monday the 21st, because there's an inservice day at the school." Though most of the main holidays, we close down, there was a good Friday once that they asked people to work and I had the kids home from school, so I couldn't. But I don't want to have to use vacation time or scramble for child care. I'm glad I have the option that I don't HAVE to work...it's got to be tough not to have that!

It's tough because you only have a certain amount of vacation days you're given every year, and nine of those go towards school closed days, right off the top. So you have 9 vacation days less than your peers when you start the year. Then add in that my child is still a preschooler, so she's still getting sick a few times a year, or carrying home illnesses that she passes on to me. So that's another 8-10 days a year staying home because one of us is sick or needs to go to the doctor.

We take a family camping trip every year with the in-laws, and usually a couple long weekends (camping, or like this year I'm taking 1.5 days off to go to New Orleans and celebrate my moms 60th birthday), but at the end of the year I have no vacation days left. I'm lucky if I'm not in the hole. Before I had a kid, I usually had a good 10 days to roll over to the next year and took plenty of vacations.

Yeah, and then there's Summer vacation. We never used a daycare or anything, so in the Summer, one of us has to be home for the kids, and that's me, because my husband is the main bread-winner. What I earn is extra. I have to say, it's easier now that they added evening hours to my job the last couple of years. When I started, it was M-F 8:30- 17:00 and that was it. My kids weren't even school aged yet, so my in-laws babysat one day a week so I could work, and Hubby worked from home for one afternoon. So I got 12 hours of work a week. Then they changed the contracts and you had to be available for 20 hours, 16 hours basis minimum....I couldn't do that. So they put me on the vacation/sub/on call roster. I SOMETIMES got 4 hours a week. But now I'm closer to 20, and it's mostly evenings. But I don't know how single moms do it...what do they do in the vacations? Regular employees with set hours get 25 days of vacation...but that's just 5 weeks. And schools have a week in Feb., 2 weeks in April/May, 6 weeks in the Summer, a week in October, and 2 weeks at Christmas. That's more than double. I don't know...I'm glad I don't have to worry about it, because I have no idea what we'd do. I'm so lucky to have the choice of whether or not I WANT to have set hours. And I so don't want to have set hours!

I think in your case, the breaks you have are longer in duration (vacation time for example), from us the U. S. We might have a few more holidays, but those are 1-day events only each year. We also have a few holidays throughout the year, that not every business, or even every state, observes. Gets confusing sometimes!
Yeah DH doesn’t get this holiday :(

The pulled pork turned out very tasty, I cooked it in ginger beer and some other ingredients, I made sweet potato mash and green beans as sides. I got my sister a few bottles of her favorite beer so she can have a nice start to her weekend.

I'm loving all these posts from across the pond with the pulled pork. We eat it ALL THE TIME. If you have left overs, pulled pork tacos are a great use for them. My husband also makes enchilada lasagna with pulled pork leftovers, which is basically all the ingredients of enchiladas but layered in a pan like a lasagna and baked.

That all sounds so good!:hungry:
I think next time I will get a bigger piece of pork because I don't think there will be left overs as I will take some meals over to my mother this weekend. I also made her a curry coconut pumpkin soup, a beef stew and vegetarian moussaka.

Pulled pork is also really excellent on top of a baked potato. Pulled pork, some sour cream, and some green onions.

How do you cook your pork?

We used to cook it for a few hours in the crock pot, but we've since got an Instant Pot, so we just toss it in there for a half hour or so. My husband managed to get a bunch of pork shoulder for around $1 a pound, so he had a lot of fun cooking it up in the Instant Pot and we now have 15 family sized servings of pulled pork in our deep freezer, LOL
