Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
Same story that happens to a lot of folks - job was eliminated at the end of last year and was blessed with a great opportunity to relocate to Indy, closer to family and friends, and work for an amazing company. Looked for a while and finally got some horse property here in September, not near as much acreage, but it’s all good, We’re just happy that we landed on our feet - a lot of folks weren’t as fortunate....

Happy that it all worked out in the end and the horses have a new home. Hope 2018 starts out so much better than 2017 did for you guys.
Be Well.

Boy Howdy--you guys know how to EAT!!! :joyfull: :joyfull: That looks delicious!!!

(Glad you mentioned the green bean casserole--I had forgotten that II had the ingredients to make that for later on today, for our mini--traditional post-Thanksgiving dinner.) :hungry:

I made my traditional day after Thanksgiving mini feast too. No turkey, but 2 broiled chickens from Sam's as we only eat white meat. Lime Green Jello. Garlic mashed potatoes, green bean casserole in honor of @figmentfan423 , a mega pan of stuffing, gravy, corn and Hawaiian biscuits. Day after feasts gets served in Gladware and served on fancy disposable dishes. Minus the Jello made early, the whole meal took about an 1.5 prepare and to cook. Stuffing took an hour to prepare and 3 to cook. Nice, laid back but just as yummy.

Note: no sweet potatoes

I had to look gourmetten up as I never heard of it. It sounds fun for Christmas. Enjoy!
Thank you! It is something both the adults and kids enjoy. I will try and take some pictures at Christmas to post. I actually had no idea that Gourmetten was just a Dutch thing but I can highly recommend it for a dinner party.

Your after Thanksgiving feast sounds incredibly good.:hungry:

@Songbird76 Your MIL sounds like a handful, good for you for standing your ground in your house. We are celebrating Christmas in the Efteling this year so we will be in the park most of the day and will buy gourmet platters to make life easier.
A handful...she can be. I love her and we get along most of the time now. Just don't let her anywhere near your house if you are remodeling or decorating. She's actually really great 90% of the time. But like my own mom, she expects me to do things her way. She's just not as...demanding as my mom was. I can actually stand up to my MIL for the most part.

Ohhhh Lordy...that's my mother to a T. She wants my house to be a duplicate of hers. (Granted, I bought the same style house as hers, but with two additions, but still...her decor is "french country" which my boys would destroy in a flat minute.) Overbearing doesn't even come close to adequate.
Really, my MIL is pretty great. She just thinks her taste is superior so I should do what SHE wants so my house will look better. I'm someone who doesn't really care about trends and what's "in". I care about what I like...I buy clothes because I like them and they are comfortable, not because everyone else is wearing such and such. Same with my house. When I first moved here, we lived with them and it was right around Christmas. My mom had just passed away the July before, and because we lived with my in-laws, everything I owned besides my clothes was in storage..she wouldn't let me put any of my own furniture or decorations in our room and I HATED the decor in our room...it's everything I hate. Stark white furniture, yellow walls, wicker chair, linoleum flooring....ugh...but it wasn't my house, so I wasn't allowed to change anything. I didn't speak a word of Dutch, I hadn't gotten my placement in school yet to learn it, so I was stuck at home all day while DH was at work. I was just in a really bad place emotionally, and I jumped at the chance to go to a garden center with her for Christmas decorations. I saw some beautiful blue Christmas ornaments that I loved and I put a box in the cart...she took them out and put them back on the shelf. I was like...no, I want to buy those....with my own money. She said no, because they were blue...blue hasn't been in style for a couple of years now. I wasn't hanging up blue ornaments in HER house. What would the neighbors think??? Um..that your American daughter-in-law likes blue and doesn't care what anyone else thinks? Nope...I could get a box of smaller blue ornaments to hang in our room, but not near the window, but that was it.
When my DH and I bought this house and were moving out of their house, they were helping us fix this place up so we could move. We had been in their house or 3 years. So she was used to calling the shots because I didn't want to make waves. But this was OUR house and I wasn't going to let her paint my walls yellow or tell me what kind of wallpaper to put up. She helped put up the wallpaper and then announced she didn't like it, we were going to take it down and she would pick something better out and put it up. I said no, this is what DH and I had picked, it's what we like, and it's staying up. And she said "But...people will know I helped put it up and they will wonder why I allowed you to put this ugly wallpaper up!" I said I didn't care what other people thought...it's MY house, I am the one who has to live with it, not them. She said "But don't you want people to feel comfortable here? And there are a couple of places where you can see it puckered a little bit!" I said no one was going to be looking that closely, and that people coming here are coming to see US, not our wallpaper. "But it looks bad! Those little places where you can see it isn't perfect". I was getting so frustrated. I said "Then I'll put a clock or a painting over those 2 little spots! We're NOT changing the wallpaper!!" Now that we've been in this house for 12 years, she doesn't try to change things anymore. She knows I'm not going to listen. She DOES still try to tell me stuff like...that I need to get a new winter coat for my son. Or that I should wear a blouse over my top. I just ignore her. She MEANS well, she just doesn't understand how anyone could choose something different than she does because she thinks her taste is so much better. Like...WHY would anyone choose to hang up blue ornaments instead of silver with red ribbons? Silver with red ribbons looks so much better! Sometimes I wear my Christmas sweater just to annoy her...she thinks it's so gaudy and "Dutch people would never wear such a thing". I said "Good thing I'm not Dutch!" Most of the time I play nice, but once in a while, I think it's good for her to be reminded that I have my own tastes and that I'm perfectly capable of making my own decisions about what I buy, what I wear, how I cook, etc. She doesn't have to like it, but she has to accept it.

My daughter is really excited and that is everything to me :inlove::inlove:

It is nice that if we go back in a few years there will be two new lands, and two whole parks we haven't seen, so it for sure won't feel like something we've already done!
And I'm sure there will be stuff you don't mind doing again. There are always favorites. I find myself wishing we could go on Carrots (of the Pirabbean) again and wishing we had a Disney trip planned so I could! But it's great that your DD is so excited. I hope it's every bit as magical for all of you as she expects it to be for her!

Well, it's just the smell of cooking. My MIL has a thing about cooking smells needing to be kept in the kitchen. When we moved into this house, I expressed my interest in knocking out part of a wall to create a kind of bar area between the kitchen and dining area and she told me no way, because then your house always smells like whatever you've cooked. I was like...EXACTLY!! But she hates that and convinced my husband it was a bad idea, so he said no. I didn't push it because it wasn't hugely important to me and I was already having to battle with her about my bathtub and washer and dryer, and she doesn't even LIVE here...it's not her house, but she's very opinionated about how we decorate, etc. She tried to overrule me on the paint color, the wallpaper, the bathroom plans, the laundry room, the carpet, the curtains, the yard, etc... I gave in on the kitchen and held my ground on everything else. But she's very much of the opinion that kitchens should always be closed off to keep the smells from permeating the rest of the house. She also keeps her kitchen door open in the winter when she's cooking...it's always freezing, but she likes the ventilation to the outside.
Oh my that's horrible, good for you to stand up to her on the important things.

The elephants were inside a big dome as it is too cold for them to be outside all day. I actually don't live in the Netherlands anymore, I moved to London about 5 years ago and to make it more confusing the zoo was in Zurich as I am currently working here on a short contract.
I am glad you liked Coco, hopefully it will still be playing in a few weeks when I go back to the Netherlands so I can go and see it with my nieces and nephews. I will bring tissues as I cry easily.
It should still be here...it hasn't been released here yet. I looked it up and it comes out on the 29th here. I would imagine it will be playing at least up until Christmas, even if there are only afternoon shows by that time.

Maybe you should try Red Lobster next time. ;) Nice shrimp and awesome rolls.
^^^this that's one of the few places I miss eating at. We gave that one up after we found out my dh is allergic to crabs and scallops. Haven't been since James was little, we ate at one just outside of Lancaster Pa, my dh had a minor reaction but worse than the last time he ate crab legs. Long story short he blamed everything else under the sun until I had him tested the next week. Silly men:hilarious:

While I love some homemade cookies I love love love Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies! No homemade version will do.
I was SOOOO excited to find GS cookies when I was home for dad's funeral. They were just setting up outside KMart when we came out. So I bought Thin Mints, Tagalongs, and Samoas. And S'mores, but those were just for the kids as for me, I need the real thing, not a cookie composed of all the s'more elements. It's just not the same when it's not oozing freshly roasted marshmallows and melting chocolate. Half the appeal of s'mores is the gooey-ness. My kids had never had honest to goodness s'mores before since they don't have graham crackers here, nor hershey's, and the marshmallows aren't the same. So they wanted to try the s'mores cookies...whatever. BUT, I also bought REAL s'mores fixings to bring home and I have now properly educated them in the art of s'mores culinary delights.
