This is one of the smartest inventions ever made. They could heat up a room and you could also cook on them. Plus, they're practically indestructible. The house I grew up in was more modern, so no wood stoves. What I thought was cool, though, was the revival of these beauties in maybe the past 20 years or so, when people realized that sometimes the old ways were still good ways--and people were buying them again and putting them into their homes.
Totally agree.

It wasn't like a fireplace on a side wall that, essentially, radiated heat out in one, slightly, spread out direction. It was in the middle of the room, and the entire room was heated uniformly. And yes, the fact that it did double duty for coffee and some other food items, besides the kitchen stove, was just simple genius.
