Funny how, as far as I know, Walt never consulted with, or surveyed, massive amounts of Guests regarding what attractions, etc., to put in Disneyland or WDW. He just seemed to have an innate sense of story and total immersion in such, and how much the Guests would appreciate the attention to detail that he championed...

“Walt, in his drive to make the Disneyland experience feel authentic, had asked that the cab be suspended by leather straps as the early stage coaches had been. “‘Why don’t we just leave the leather straps off, Walt?’ John questioned. ‘The people are never going to appreciate all this close up detail.’ Walt turned, firmly planted his finger on John’s chest, and replied, ‘You’re being a poor communicator. People are okay, don’t you ever forget that. They will respond to it. They will appreciate it.”

—John Hench ex-Imagineering Senior Vice President

The irony is, TWDC could possibly very well benefit creatively from something Walt never needed to do, because they are so blinded by the bottom line, and only seem to really care about "creatively" making more profit.
I get that, but, at a certain point, there's a crossover critical mass, and it just becomes plain sick... :hungover:

Now, with all that time I spent on all a' that up there, the ultimate killer to all of it, these days especially, are the legalities.
Sure, they can do surveys all day long about what your experience was, etc., but you start spouting ideas about how this section of an attraction can be improved by your new idea, and your cut off at the pass.
When I worked at the Disney Store, we were not allowed to accept any unsolicited ideas from anyone outside the Company, in any way, shape, or form. No envelopes, no emails, no discussions...we were instructed to nip it all in the bud.
I've posted about this before, but, when I was a CM, I had an idea for a portion of a water slide that, to this day, I still know would be awesome!
I sketched it up in color and labeled everything about how it would work, with failsafes and all, and was so happy with it!
Of course, stupidly as hell (I'll just blame it on the Pixie Dust ;)) I thought that it would be a good idea that they would want to look at from a fellow CM, no matter how far down the line. Not. Even. Close.
I went so far as to call Legal in NYC, and was told no way Jose.
That's when I found out they didn't even want ideas from CMs within the Company, unless you were in certain job roles.

Ultimately, especially in today's climate, I should have known better, but, even though sometimes, and even many times, we get the 2x4 of life broken across our faces, we can still dream...hopefully, though, we eventually learn to dream smarter...! ;)

I agree Walt did have a innate knowledge of what would please people that was part of his genius. From what I've read though he was very interested in getting guests opinions and talked with guests (especially children) at the parks and sent his imagineers into the park to experience it from the viewpoint of guests so they would know how to make it better. I think you are right that now-a-days Disney is just a bit to much in the bean counting mentality. I have heard before that they don't allow outside or even in your case in-house solicitation for idea. I can understand not taking in outside ideas, but if one of their own employees has an idea I would hope that would be encouraged. But they must know what they are doing, Disney is a multi-million or perhaps billion dollar corporation. :)

Hubs and I burst out laughing over this photo! (Last year, he told me he was at Walgreens buying me a last minute card  like all the other guys, crowding the card aisle, just like the photo above!! :p

I barely remembered to buy mine this year. I was doing our doughnut run on Saturday morning and I remembered that Valentine's was in a couple days so I got some cards at the the grocery store. Valentine's isn't really an important holiday to me so I kind of forget about it until it is upon us.

Oh, absolutely about Walt very ofen in DL himself walking around talking to guests and getting feedback, as well as sending out his imagineers to actually observe it all in person. I actually originally intended to mention that in my post, but, it was already getting rather long, and most of us "Diznuts" ;) are already familiar with that wonderful aspect of Walt.
The difference being that (as far as I know, anyway) he didn't have a group of CMs that went out to conduct massive surveys or polls, or send out mass mailers of same, etc. with a bunch of loaded questions.
Himself, and others in the company he felt needed the info, got it the best way possible...hands on. :)

Yep, seems to me the bean counting is getting a bit out of hand these days... :bored: ;)

And, as far as the unsolicited ideas situation, yes, it was disappointing, but, as I mentioned, based on the legal climate for many, many years now, I totally understand.
I have entertained the idea of trying to get Schlitterbahn to maybe take a look at my idea, but, I have yet to even begin to pursue it. Pretty sure it will be met with the same legal roadblocks. :cyclops:
