a lot of kids are kinda lazier now, and prefer to do online jobs.

I kind of agree and kind of don't agree. I think it goes to how a kid is raised. I can think a lot of my students (ages 11-16) who would just be lazy, but the majority would jump on the chance to earn some money even at a manual type of job. Although I do live in a rural area and many of the kids grow up doing chores and working on a farm.

You and I must be kindred spirits. We're "almost" the same, except you don't like cold weather or snow that much, BUT, you like shoveling snow!! So do I !! :joyfull: I love getting out there and throwing the stuff around. I make neat paths, too. I'm always proud of my shoveling prowess. :inlove:

Great, wanna come over and help me shovel? Hubby shoveled before he went to work but that was before the plow came by....I'm going to church soon and by the time I come back there will be even more to shovel. That gives you enough time to teleport here and help right?! ;) Even though I like shoveling, I dislike moving the stuff the plow pushes in front of the driveway, it is always so heavy.:grumpy:

Good morning it's less than 8 hours until the carp is supposed to start and still no clue where the rain/snow line is setting up. No worries because I'm staying in and cooking and baking today. Let's see a big pot of gravy(tomato sauce), baked ziti, spaghetti squash, italian bread, banana bread, sauteed cauliflower, applesauce bread(note to self bring up apples), rice and beans(another recipe that will be in my will) and maybe the first batch of cookies I'm thinking almond. The boys are putting up the tree this year:cautious:

Sounds good, I thought about doing Italian today too but we just had pizza and alfredo last night. Hubby doesn't like Italian too many nights in a row. So I'm making cottage pie, hamburger, brown gravy and mashed potatoes. Good warming food for after I shovel the snow.

I used to shovel the neighbors' driveways & paths for $5 per house back in the late 70's/early 80's. (around ages 9 to 14 or so.) There were 3 "regulars" who counted on me (after I did my own house) and would usually do an extra 1 or 2.

And that is one of several wintry reasons I now live in south Florida!

Others include:

driving on ice
driving on black ice
driving on icy bridges
driving in blizzards on the NJ Turnpike after the Governor declares it's illegal to be on the Turnpike in the blizzard, and having to "Dukes of Hazzard" my way through a snow bank created by the plow at my designated exit, fingers-crossed, and the T-bird made it!

just being cold. just sitting in a cold car before it warms up. freezing to do any little chore - run to the store, take out the garbage cans, bring in the garbage cans. also cold, wet gloves. cold, wet socks. taking boots on and off. boo.

I saw no reason to continue such madness LOL.

Well, I can understand the need for it to be done, as a matter of safety. But people can hardly expect everyone to be able to do it in that same time frame...what if you are disabled? And sure, you can pay someone to do it, if you can afford that, but if you can't, what happens? I don't think we have any such rules here, but I don't know. I do my walkway, my next door neighbors' walkway, and then the sidewalk in front of our house and the sidewalk in front of both neighbors' houses. If one of my other neighbors asked, I'd do theirs too. I don't mind it and we never get so much snow that it takes hours. It's usually a 15 minute job to do just the stuff I already do. If there was someone I knew who needed it done, I'd do it, but the other neighbors all either do it themselves or have kids nearby who do it. I think it's sad that there's no one to help you out! What happened to being neighborly?

I so wish we had a law that required sidewalks to be shovelled. Walking our Pups in the Snowy winter months was rough and then it gets icy if the snow sticks around too long. Neighborly here is dependant of the neighborhood. Most of us all know each other. We help each other out and watch out for the elderly, disabled vet etc.

Sidewalks here are a touchy thing. We didn't have sidewalks until 9/11. Some wanted them, some fought them big time and refuse to shovel. Then on the street that our Primary and Private School is on there are carriage walks. Sure they get shovelled then the plow comes through and you have a couple feet of Street Sludge Snow on top of the carriage walk. Stupid engineers, who puts carriage walks in areas where it snows?

Our town has a law that sidewalks need to be shoveled within 24 hours of the snow fall. Luckily we don't have a sidewalk in front of our house, so one less thing to shovel. Over at the church though there is a long sidewalk on two sides and often whoever is signed up to shovel/snowblow doesn't show up so hubby gets stuck with it.

Which all this reminds me...you mentioned that you used to put gripper things over your shoes when you would walk Walt in the winter, what were those called and where can I get some. Kapono really enjoys her daily walks and to be honest it is usually the highlight of my day, so I don't want to stop until spring melt. But I am a big wuss about walking on uncleared surfaces, I've fallen more than my fair share.

I remember seeing called Stabilicers at a few sporting goods places. That may be a good places to start. I'm not sure if I saw them at Cabella's or Gander Mountain. Me I stay inside when it's icy.
