OK question about bread. If you look back decades and decades ago people had bread boxes that they put loaves of bread in. Anyone know what that was about. I know one of my Grans had one.

They're from the prerefrigeration era. They keep light and air out so the bread doesn't go stale. I have one because some gf breads don't do well in the frige and we go through loaves pretty quickly here

Good morning it's less than 8 hours until the carp is supposed to start and still no clue where the rain/snow line is setting up. No worries because I'm staying in and cooking and baking today. Let's see a big pot of gravy(tomato sauce), baked ziti, spaghetti squash, italian bread, banana bread, sauteed cauliflower, applesauce bread(note to self bring up apples), rice and beans(another recipe that will be in my will) and maybe the first batch of cookies I'm thinking almond. The boys are putting up the tree this year:cautious:

We're only getting 1-3 inches at some point tonight into tomorrow morning. It will be pretty, but will probably just melt in a day or so. No snowy Christmas landscape for us yet . . . :(

I had one up until a few years ago. It was were you stored bread or pastries. It kept them in the dark and was said to preserve the shelf life a few days. Also a handy place to hide it away. I use the refrigerator now and it keeps the stuff fresh much longer. I had no basis of comparison so I don't really know if it kept it longer or not. It seemed to work, but, just leaving it out on the counter might have done the same thing.
It would keep those random critters out too. My grandma would put stuff in there when the winter would bring in a mouse's appearance.
