Lots of interesting viewpoints today on dress codes at Signature restaurants. I think that @Gabe1 nailed it when she stated that the downfall of more dressy dinner attire happened as a result of the DDP. I think that WDW was more concerned about getting in as many people as they could into those restaurants, and pushing them out fairly quickly; so that they could seat the additional influx of guests on the DDP. Hence, the more relaxed evening dining experience, with people properly dressed, got pushed to the back burner.

My own opinion on all this is that I don't think anyone should have to dress up "more" for dinner, if they are using any of the restaurants inside the parks.

As for Signature restaurants in the hotels (just for evening dinners only, not lunch), I don't have any problem with at least a Smart Casual rule. And, I also like to have the option (for those who really enjoy getting dressed up once in a while) for at least 2 or 3 hotel restaurants to require more dressy apparel (no, not tuxedos--it's still not quite a cruise ship formal atmosphere). I can envision couples who might want a lovely, romantic dinner experience, or others who simply enjoy an elegant evening. I would think that Victoria and Albert's and also the California Grill would fall into that last category.

For the heck of it, I copied (below) directly from the WDW web site, the actual (enforced) dress code for Victoria and Albert's:

Men must wear dinner jackets with dress pants or slacks and shoes. Ties are optional. Women may wear a cocktail dress, nice dress, dressy pant suit or a skirt with a blouse.

Jeans, shorts, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes are not permitted.

Yeah, I get Victoria and Albert's. That is a 5 Diamond restaurant, the only one in the state of Florida. If you are saying this demographic of children are not welcome I get that guys have to wear shoes.

Cali Grill isn't really a good comparison for a Signature Restaurant, not that it isn't good it is because they don't operate like a real Signature restaurant. It has tables stuffed in there like a diner, barely enough room to slide in sideways to reach your chair or booth. V&A has reservations where Cali and others take ADRs, so often you can wait a very long time past your time. It is difficult to throw Cali off its pace too. Cali was once a fine dining establishment in its early years, but never the signature Top of the World was with its performing dinner shows. Artist Point is closer to Signature as is Yatchmans, they know how to pace and how to hold close to a reservation time.

LeCellier while years ago we ate there once a year is not the same as when my kids were small. Still a fine TS restaurant just not an Artist Point Signature, to crammed like Cali, too off their ressie times and a true victim of the dining plan.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

Truer words were never spoken. DDP killed Le Cellier.

Resort Signature restaurants are definitely a step above those located in the parks. On many levels.

My mom used to always dress up to go to the doctor's.

This always made zero sense to me.
If there's any place where you are expected to look carppy, it's the doctor's office.

My Mom was one of 12 children they didn't have a lot growing up. Keeping them fed was the goal. (My grandfather should have thought of that when creating 12 children, but he was Irish Catholic.) When she married my Dad and had my Sister and I things changed for her and my Aunt worked for the Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

I could easily go 2 months with never wearing the same dress twice as my Aunt received the samples for next to nothing and they were the finest of quality. I think we were like my Moms little Barbie Dolls changed and primped a couple times a day. My Mom almost died when I was around 10 after our Spring in Florida. The best they could tell was a fungus took over her lungs from a pond we went wandering around. So while my Dad took care of us he stopped putting us in dresses and put us in jeans. As hard as my Mom tried when she came back home from the hospital months later that dress thing never returned. Amen.

Oddly when my Mom and I returned from Acapulco she fell very ill from dysentery and spent weeks in ICU, touch and go. It was another 5 years before my Mom and I would take another trip together, she was sick of trying to die and I had enough scares of her passing away from vacations.

Yeah I agree. Behavior is taught from young. By the time mine were two both could just look at the expression of my eyes if they even slightly began to forget where they were. I had a saying for when we were approaching our destination, family parties, airplanes, airports, any restaurant from a McDonalds to fine dining etc., simply Best Behavior. They knew that meant no playing around, hands off each other, no playing with food or beverages, respect your surroundings, you name it. It started as toddlers, they are like cats very receptive to learning, maybe not what they prefer but dang they are trainable. My DD was 2 weeks old when she went to her first Thanksgiving at a fine dining restaurant. Timed it to where she'd fall sleep in the car. When she woke my Mom immediately shoved a bottle in her mouth and when done she was just happy to be held. That is why I look at parents more than kids when they act out minus some issue that a parent is attempting to gain control over of course. It isn't kids responsibility to figure it out, it is parents job to teach with boundaries.

Then again I am one of those that will excuse myself from a table to take a phone call if necessary. Never did believe people dining should have to listen to that.

Hahaaa...!
My saying for same was always "Just be nice!" They knew the consequences if they weren't. To this day, they still say "Remember what dad always says...just be nice!" !!! :joyfull: :)

And, I will do same with the phone calls. I don't wanna' hear anyone else's phone call stuff and expect they don't wanna' hear mine. That simple.

Red Velvet Oreo's with cream cheese filling are supposed to be on the store shelves February 2nd for a limited time....

A bit late for Valentines Day. My favorite so far of the newbies is the Birthday Cake, a nice balance with the white cookie to birthday cake filling. :hungry:

And has anyone seen the Crispy M&Ms yet? I've been looking for my DD who loved them as a kid and they were to come out the beginning of January. :arghh:

You know what... I'm scheduled to cruise from Rome, Italy to Fort Lauderdale at the end of a three week tour of parts of Europe in Oct. If anyone thinks that I am going to cart any formal wear all over Europe so I can sit at a pretentious table with a group of status seekers, they really need to rethink it.

Ha! My guess is you will not go hungry.

The way they cram people into airplane seats these days, the last thing I'd want to do is be all dressed up and even more uncomfortable!! In the case of airline travel, I'm certainly glad that clothing styles have become more relaxed.

Me too. My Mom always put us in our best clothing and coats to fly when we were small. Even when I was a toddler there are photo's of me in a ruffly dress and patent leather shoes with tights. Now how the heck you change a tiny kids bottom in an outfit like that?

That was one of my pet peeves flying. No changing area for babies.

All over our news, Health Dept advising some families to stay away from Disneyland so they don't get sick.

PR nightmare. 5 CMs with measles. Boy bet that number grows. Being branded by media as DisneyMeasles.

Ha!

Tip toe...but you have to remember the pools for competition swimmers is very cold and 'things' tend to shrink in cold water. :coldfeet:

Hahaaa...!
Yes, I'm a guy, so... :cyclops: ;) :)
BTW, Isn't there a Seinfeld episode about that...? o_O
I always just thought of a hammock as more loose and comfortable. Although, banana does rhyme better with hammock than strangler...! :D :)

Not a lot of men ever achieve the first look.
Time and gravity pretty much guarantee the second. :hilarious:

There is nothing better than a male competition swimmer. My DD refused to swim butterfly 'cause she didn't want to develop those guy shoulders gal's get. She swam breas t stroke, it was more about rhythm than muscle.

When I was first married and we had my shepard, my first born so to say, DH didn't want her in bed or on furniture.
Her room was the extra bedroom where we hid DH pre-marriage living room furniture. She slept there at first until she realized our bed was more comfy. When he left she took his place. One day he got up before dawn on a Saturday to go golf came home around 10am, me still sleeping, her too in his spot. He tried to get her out. No. He tried to crawl in, she wouldn't budge. Me <--------- well I played opossum silently laughing hysterically.
