That seems odd to me...almost like blackmail. Yes, they should pay for the damages, but the money should go towards THAT, not a charity. Making him pay to a charity to get his passport back doesn't seem ethical. Charge him with a crime and make him pay for that and legal fees...the rest is extortion isn't it?
Pretty sure the US pushed for a deal like that.
I dont think they would like to see their "gold winners" to go to jail.
lying under oath is a big thing.

Were they under oath, though? They reported being robbed, but did they actually go to court over it? I have no idea what happened. I wasn't following it.

Under oath or not... they went public with the story. Then along came the video's of the event at the gas station. They lied about what happened, caused a lot of expense and embarrassment to the government in Rio and made the USA look like a bunch of lying fools. Seems like we have enough of that going on in the election, it didn't need reinforcing.

I'm upset that all they seem to have gotten so far is the directive to donate to a charity. I don't think it is enough. I had many occasions in my youth to get in that kind of trouble, but, I managed to steer clear of it and if I had seen something like that happen, I would have sung like a canary about the truth. They all are guilty and it is time we stop giving those jocks a free pass. Just because one can swim doesn't mean they shouldn't have a working brain or aren't responsible for their actions.

They lied to the police a few times if the newspapers are correct.
Right, but is that under oath?

Oh I'm not saying they should all go scott free, the question about the oath was in response to Cesar RM, because he said 'lying under oath" was a big deal...which it IS, but if they weren't under oath, then you can't try them for that. Then it's plain flat lying, which is wrong, but not criminal.

The under oath thing really only applies if you are in court. In this case they allegedly gave false information to the police, (also known as, falsifying a report of criminal activity as a coverup) causing costs and misdirection to investigations, even perhaps creating a situation where someone else might suffer due to incorrect information. When the tapes showed up they admitted doing what was done thus actually eliminating the need for a trail. They caused a completely erroneous report of problems in Rio that could and would directly affect tourism and the reputation of an entire country. They are extremely lucky that they aren't sitting behind bars even as we speak. I don't know what the civil laws are in Rio, you are citing what it might look like if in the U.S. Rio is not bound by our laws.

As much as I disapprove to the slight hand slap that they have received so far, if I were them I would very quietly slink back home and not mention this to anyone ever again.

Are those NASCAR events? I'm not denying, the last time I was an obsessive NASCAR fan it was at local tracks in the late 60's so I'm not familiar.

After I got married I took my new wife to a couple of races. She had never been because she was way more culturally refined then I was. I assured her that I had never, in all the years I had been going, witnessed a serious accident that resulted in injury. The first one I took her to, had an accident where the car ran head first into a solid concrete retaining wall in front of the grandstand and ended up with the engine sitting on the drivers lap. Needless to say, multiple serious injuries in that one.

The second one I had assured her that what she saw was just a fluke. During the race, a car spun upward on a high banked corner and at the same time was hit low broadside. The car took flight off the bank and the force of the broadside hit, flipped it upside down landing and skidding on it's roof about 100 yards. The car that hit it burst into flames and the driver had to get himself out, ran down to the infield and collapsed. The driver of the first car took in about the full 100 yards of top soil being scooped up by the open windshield scraping along the ground. Both were transported to the hospital, both had minor injury's, but, to top it all off, for some unknown reason the truck that had all the fire extinguishing equipment didn't make it to the race like it usually did and we had to watch the car burn itself out before the local firetruck got there. We never went again. Can't say that I really miss it, but, I did enjoy it back in the day.
Hrmmmm...maybe your wife was bad luck! :P
