It really depends on the school district for public schools. Some build 5-7 snow days into the schedule. Ifthey don'tduse them or all of them the school year usually ends early for summer break.

My district doesn't build days into the calendar so if we use 7 days we extend the school year by that many days.
I like the other way better, it is psychologically better. We have waived the snow days a couple times due to Summer Construction Projects but we still must meet the minimum state standards for attendance. We have also (which I didn't agree with) released the students at the end of the year and held the staff for inservice days which is legal by state standards for attendance. Keeping staff IMO is bad will. Keep them all or release them all. I lost that round.
They always build snow days into the calendar here. It means that it's rare that they have to tack on days at the end of the year.

When I was a freshman in high school, we actually had the state forgive days. Remember "snowmagedon" when everything, including the government, shut down? Yeah, two weeks straight of no school. And that wasn't the only time that we didn't go. The state waived days for most counties in the state because otherwise, we would have been there until July.

Yeah when my DD was a freshman in college we had a massive blizzard. State forgave those days since there were more later. Some years we have none.

Going weeks beyond the end of the year really has a trickle down...people have vacations planned, parents have bid vacation time, construction at schools over summer, summer programs both for kids and college students depending on earnings, many teachers especially younger ones have summer jobs, messes with summer school...the list goes on.

"Chicago recorded an all-time high of 504 killings in 2012, but just two years later homicides were down to 392". I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I think they are still the highest on the list, but all the numbers for 2014 haven't been finalized yet....

Yeah, there is a real scandal about how Chicago was reporting its numbers. 3 people shot, 1 incident. Really messed with the comparable numbers. All of my sons friends are moving into the city. 2 have moved to the neighborhood I spent my early life in. They say it is up and coming again...the problem is the mixture of great and awful peeps.
We left after a few gang boys scooped me up at age 6 on my own block and told me to tell my parents we don't belong here. Dad sold the two flat and moved us to the burbs so fast. Some of Chicago is just beautiful though and sadly the statistics and meld together.

Working in the city, I say NO, and many of my colleagues feel the same. There are others who believe it will be a good thing and bring in money, etc., but I've also heard that some other venues who have hosted the games have lost their shirt on it.

Chicago's mayor wanted this so badly. He retired very shortly after they lost the bid round #1. He left the city in the hole, made some bad contract deals that will forever harm Chicago. He could have likely stuck around and drove the city into a crater if they won the bid and immediately after retired. The should count their blessings.

Nineteen days off for Christmas break, back for one, five days off because of cold temps. :cautious:

I really get why the schools close. It is such a liability. People say parents don't have to send the students but then staff still has to manage to get to schools and teach half a classroom of students and still has to reteach to catch the rest up.

But my heart goes out to parents, especially single working parents or dual working parents. Employers are not all very forgiving especially when it drags on. Or the parents have to find somewhere to keep shuffling their kids to.

Hate the snow. :cautious:

Its ok,. you can still hate Iger, Meg.. oh wait she's leaving.. well you can still hate the other 2 managers.

I'm one of the few that can't hate on Meg. I kinda admire what she did for her career given all her disabilities. Kinda a pioneer for women in the industry. Not easy for a woman to climb to that level at Disney considering how few women did when she started. I wish her well.

There are definitely some people who can't give up driving, and hand over the keys to others. I'm just the opposite!! ;)

If I won the lottery and was a wealthy woman, one of the first things I'd do is hire a chauffeur. I don't care what kind of car it is, though. I just would love to have someone drive me anywhere I wanted, whenever I wanted. If I never had to drive again, that would be find with me. :D
That's cool, but for me, I love driving especially a stick shift.
