That's a smart idea. I've heard horror stories over the years about floods, broken pipes, etc., when people have taken off for a few weeks on vacation, and come home to a water disaster in the house. Yikes.
I think I posted about this a long time ago...
This happened in the summer of '07. My folks had gone out of town for the weekend to my moms hometown for her 50th HS reunion.
A next door neighbor went to walk his dog and noticed sheets of water running out of their garage and down the driveway around dusk Saturday night.
He called, and I immediately went over. I walked into the house with a flashlight 'cause I wasn't gonna' turn on any light switches if I was gonna' be standing in water.
Anyway, when I opened the front door there was about 3 inches of water across the entire floor (about an inch bellow the raised entry), and I could hear water spewing from somewhere in the game room back between the garage and kitchen. It was coming from the laundry closet. I opened the doors and got hit directly in the face with gushing water. I then held my breath an dove in to shut off the water valve supplying the washer...the hose had burst.
I'm standing there soaking wet, not believing what I'm seeing, with three inches of water in every room of the house.
I finally managed to track down my folks through my aunt and uncle in her hometown (my folks didn't have a cell phone at the time). They immediately headed home.
Anyway, about 3 months later, you would never have known it even happened if you weren't told.
But, it was 3 months of a lot of carp...
All furniture removed, all carpets torn up (nothing but concrete floors), base boards trashed, holes drilled in the drywall for blowers going 24-7 to dry out the drywall, etc. it was nuts.
That hose was replaced by a braided steel line after that...!
