Let me try to explain more simply.

More equipment on board = more weight.
More weight = more gas usage
more gas usage = need more fuel, and thus uses more fuel to carry the weight of the additional fuel.

Did you know that airliners always have to find a "balance" when painting their planes?
Paint can weight a few hundread kilograms in a large plane (Iv'e seen the number of 500Kg or half ton in a 747-200 around the web).
That also "costs" to the airline in fuel. but int he other hand.. Paint protects the fuselage from corrosion and "bounces" light that can radiate in the plane (and thus increase AC costs).
Thats why some airlines either go for white paint, or metal brushing finish (like American Airlines and AeroMexico).

Yes, thus the usage of more efficient high-bypass turbofan engines, American Airlines lack of paint, and even them eliminating one black olive from all salads back in about '87 saved them around $40,000.

And, on the tail of that, and relating back to Schlotzsky's earlier, one of the ways they saved money on the black olives they put on their sandwiches was to contract with a company that pitted and canned olives...they simply got a very discounted rate on the ends of the olives that were being pitted and normally just being discarded. Brilliant.!!! :joyfull:

Yep, they peaked at 759 stores and now have only 350, but, seem to be making a bit of a comeback. They were founded here in Austin in '71. Still an awesome, quality sandwich...! :hungry:

We still have plenty of Applebee's around here, too. We've never had a bad meal there. My favorite is their Shrimp 'N Parmesan Sirloin...! :hungry:

That looks delicious! We have Applebee's but rarely go. Maybe I'll have to fix that. ;)

Made a major discovery tonight (drum roll . . .) I have 18 cans of Bumble Bee solid white tuna. Although I like tuna sandwiches, I haven't had one in a few months. o_O

Now, sometimes when I see a sale on something (like tuna . . . ;) ), as in, 5 cans for $5, I'll pick up 5 cans and put them in a cabinet. Then, I forget . . . , and see another sale someplace else, so I buy more. Anyway, tonight I was rummaging through a tightly packed cabinet, and I counted 18 cans of tuna in there! :hilarious: :hilarious:

P.S.: Never did find what I was initially looking for in the kitchen cabinet--the tuna cans were in the way!! :p
I guess it's time for tuna noodle casserole. ;)

I can't imagine anyone actually saying you should just deal with it! That's horrible! Sure it's an inconvenience, but not a HUGE one and as you are in tin box in the air, it's not like you can just go to the doctor if you have a reaction. A school is one thing...it's probably big enough to have a safe zone where kids with allergies can avoid contact. But kind of hard in an enclosed space 30,000 feet in the air.
While I have never had anyone tell me that about an airplane, you would be surprised at the number of adults who think that asthma and allergies aren't real or that you should just muddle through. I used to hear it a lot from peers at school, like that I was just faking my asthma or that I had control over it. Unfortunately, those opinions don't always go away into adulthood.

My maternal grandmother had asthma as well (I am the fourth generation of asthmatics in my family. Definitely genetic). My uncle lived with his parents for several years before my grandmother passed. My grandmother couldn't vacuum with her asthma, which is understandable; I couldn't for a long time either, which is why we have a Dyson that is accredited as being asthma and allergy friendly. Anyway, she asked my uncle and grandfather to take care of the vacuuming. My uncle one time complained about it to my mother, saying that my grandmother should just push through it. My mother, very nicely but very firmly, set her brother straight on that one.

We use to eat at Applebee's pretty frequently for a while and all of a sudden you could almost see the same staff have an attitude, it wasn't like that before. Then one meal my baked potato came with this teeny tiny dish of sour cream. I asked if I could have a couple more cause what that was was only good for a forkful. They complied. The bill came and I was charged for 2 additional sour creams sides @ $1 each.
I felt badly for the server but the manager was a jerk about it and we were known loyal patrons. That was our last Applebee's experience, they got the $2 and never a penny more.

My pop smoked for 12 years, but, quit when he found out mom was expecting me (the first of 4 kiddos), and never smoked again. Mom has never smoked. I used to smoke recreationally, but, can't remember the last time I had a cigarette. DWifey has never smoked, and completely and absolutely detests it. My DWifeys pop smoked about 3 packs a day, and her mom about half that on and off for years. Her pop has been gone for over a decade, and her mom stopped all smoking years ago when she was diagnosed with COPD.
It's actually funny, because although my parents never smoked, all our other friends parents did, so we were quite used to it. I never really gave it a second thought. Now, if I even get a small wiff, I'm like... o_O

Yep, perfumes and colognes make me do that o_O too. Worse if I'm at a table with guys and ladies all wearing something else. Nasty.

Our own little Tuna Hoarder. Me, I find myself hoarding dried pasta as I see sales.

On the multitudes of Southwest flights I've done over the past almost 25 years I've never heard an announcement to refrain from eating peanut products on a flight. It must be rare occasions or people with allergies just deal with it.

See my DD can't just deal with some of her particular allergies. First it is like as she says an elephant is sitting on her chest and then getting air into her lungs is next to impossible. Not something you just deal with, they'd have to land the plane. My niece has been transported multiple times to the ER this first year at her University. They or she slams in the Epi and then they must transport her to ER. On our flights on SouthWest we get bags of pretzels.

its interesting how things affect each people differently.
In my case, I can "pass out" for less than a second(as in recovering very fast but enough to say get me confused) when I'm around enclosed areas with lots of wood and paper (like a very tightly closed building full of wood beams and furniture).
And I hate perfume areas, thanks to being deaf, my sense of smell is stronger. Thus I get overhelmed. I always dodge the perfume sections in stores.
