Many people are on vacation this week (I assume because it's also school vacation week for many children). This made commuting a dream today. Coming home tonight on the express bus, the highway portion only took 14 minutes, versus 45 on a regular weekday.

One thing I enjoy when I take the bus, is the ride through the suburban streets at night and seeing all the Christmas lights up on the houses. I particularly enjoy the houses with hideous light displays that look like a drunken person strung them up! :p I'll never understand how some of these people could think that their house looks gorgeous, with about 8 different kinds of lights thrown haphazardly from the roof to the ground, with no design pattern at all.

Yep, my commute to and from the office today was a breeze. The more I think about it, I shoulda' just taken the whole 2 weeks off, like in years past. I had more than enough available vacation days. We'll probably leave early New Year's Eve, as per usual, and then I'm not back at the office 'til Monday.

The last part of my commute back home through the neighborhoods is so enjoyable this time of year. Since we don't normally leave the office 'til 6p, it's plenty dark and the lights are gorgeous. I'll sometimes meander down the side streets for a bit to get my fill. :)

A check is something you pay your bills with. Those of us who prefer to live in retro land, mail out our checks monthly, in the mail. :) We also like supporting the US Mail. I like the mailman that delivers on our street; he's friendly to people and likes my dog, even though my dog barks up a stink fit :p whenever he comes up on the porch to put the mail in the box. We always give him a little gift at Christmas, and he always sends us a nice card and includes Jack, our dog, in the message! ;)

And if you think I'm hopeless by still using paper checks and mailing them, you should have known my grandmother. She used to put 2 stamps on her envelopes, because she thought that the mailmen would notice how she cared enough to put 2 stamps on, and they would take very special care that her mail would go first, and arrive safely at it's destination! :p :joyfull:

And, I'm not done yet. :cautious: :D My grandmother's daughter (aka, my mother), didn't put double stamps on her mail; but would only mail her envelopes at the town center post office--because she was convinced that this particular group of mailmen there, were the only ones competent to deliver her mail safely.

I have no explanation for why 3 generations of women in my family are obsessed with the post office, but I guess we must have some odd DNA in our family tree?! o_O  :hilarious:

Oh My! You do have some characters in your family tree too! Our mail lady is very nice and she talks to Walter in his window every day but likely she is a cat person. When we are out she keeps a body length between her and Walt, the furious beast.

They took away all but a few mailboxes in commercial areas of my town. Now we have to hang them out of the mailbox for the carrier to collect them. I'm not a fan of that. The few times a year I mail a letter I go to the post office. With all the care packages I've sent over the last decade it is strange not to go there every week.

For the last two years my DD was in high school she received about a half dozen mailings a day from colleges and universities. I once said to the carrier I felt bad for her...her response was stuff like this is what keeps her employed.

I do not remember Rudolph's Shiny New Year being this bad.
Think I might watch the Canadian Juniors vs Finland instead.

What you meant to say was "I do not remember Rudolph's Shiny New Year being this awesome." Strange things that auto correct does... I spent most of my youth with an irrational fear of buzzards.

The one that is truly bad is Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July with Ethel Merman. I can't even watch that one any more. I'll be watching Shiny New Year tomorrow or Wednesday for certain (Tivo'd already).

At work, one of the women I know grew up in Poland. Every Christmas season, she always brings in boxes of candy from Poland. Some of it is tasty and different. However, today I tried a chocolate covered prune . . . it just didn't make it . . . :depressed:

Ewe.

My Gran taught me to make plum dumplings. This kind of plum.

Sweet dough wrapped around the pitted plum boiled then fried in frying pan in oil, when removed roll in sugar. Sometimes we put a dab of fresh whipped cream in the middle when we sliced them open. :hungry:

They are so yummy. A much better use of a plum than turning it into a prune.

That movie has given children lasting nightmares for generations.

I still can't remember a movie from my childhood that ever gave me nightmares.
The Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorites and never did either. Flying monkeys, and all.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that, no matter what happened during the course of those movies, there was always a happy ending...? :cyclops: :)

I never thought it was a scary movie. I was fascinated by the vivid colors. The monkeys and the witch were too "halloweeny" and "cartoonish" for me to be frightening.
