We went on Oasis of the Seas. It has been refurbished in the last two years. It is a wonderful ship. Lots to do, or not do. We liked it so much, we went on a two week cruise the next year. It only seems small upon boarding. After a couple hours, everyone disperse's to different areas of the ship. We loved walking around the walking, jogging track. I can put a couple pictures of the ship, if you are interested.
sure!

Never heard of it being that way, which doesn't mean anything, I've been on two cruises in my life, so what I know would be limited. It doesn't seem like an inviting system unless the cruise fees are ridiculously low (which I doubt). But, if they do that, I'm sure that they have to inform people of the rules and expectations as well as provide options for those that do not want to pay extra.
I actually seen some of the upcharge prices of some restaurants.. definitively not cheap (starting at 25 USD, some go up to 100 USD)

They used to post the menu outside the restaurant. Before you enter, you will know if the restaurant charges. You get a "ship newspaper" in your room each day. It tells the day's activities, and information about the individual restaurants, and if there is a charge. It is less complicated than looks like. You are free to roam around and see what is available, and what interests you. We did go to one upcharge restaurant. Sister wanted to do that. Personally, I think the evening meals in the dining room, was just as good.
I just hope we do not get overhelmed. We never been to a ship that big.
I mean, we only cruised once in the Wonder and felt big, not overhelming thats it.
But compared to the Oasis, the Wonder is a row boat.

By upcharge do you mean for stuff that isn't on the established menu for the cruise. For example, they don't have prime rib on the menu for that meal and you want prime rib making it a special order? Or maybe a menu that has the standard items but also lists other entrees that cost extra? That is how I would envision it happening and even understand why it would be done that way on either example.

You won't be over whelmed. It's broken up in nice areas. Some night clubs, you don't have to drink alcohol, they have non alcoholic drinks. Get the lava flow, it's coconut based, with a river of strawberry syrup running through it. It does cost extra. The night clubs are free, you can sit as long as you want. Each one has a different kind of music. It's fun to try them out. Their is a large casino, on board. If you like that sort of thing. It's really smoky, so we only walked through once. They have a couple outdoor places to eat. And free ice cream cones!

That's exactly how it works. And their are a few restaurants, that cost extra too.
