Well, most people in my home town are pretty well off. We were an exception because my parents didn't work for the mines. The father in this family did, so they had money. They were just REALLY snobby and looked down on us because my parents were divorced and we were poor. The kids constantly told us we didn't have a "real" family, that God didn't love us because we were sinners, etc. I can't imagine the kids came up with those kinds of comments themselves, and the girl apologized to my mom years later, after we had graduated from high school. She knew she had been HORRIBLE to us and she apparently felt really bad. I suspect that what the real problem with the Yellowstone trip was is that they didn't like my family and didn't want their daughter to spend an extended amount of time with us, and possibly the girl didn't want to go camping where there were bugs and dirt, etc, and they just wanted an excuse for her to not be able to go. But it snowballed and suddenly none of the parents would let their girls go if my brother was going to be on the trip. Eventually the trip was canceled, but my mom was friends with the leader of the Minnesota trip, and THEY were still going...so they asked my mom if she would come as their guide, my brother went to church camp, and I got to go with my mom. We had to pay for ourselves instead of the girl scout troop paying for it, but at least I got to go, and I had sooo much more fun than I would have with the girls from my troop, so it all worked out. That's the problem with a small town though....everyone knows everyone, and knows who has money, who doesn't, which church everyone goes to, where they work, who is divorced, etc.
