@Moonothingie , I came across an interesting story about Guernsey potato peel pie. Have you ever had it, or was it just something made back in the 40s, or thereabouts? Link below -- (if you scroll down a bit, the full recipe is there).
unlike @Figgy1 I am not old enough to remember this. I haven't tried it, but it is supposed to be an acquired taste.![]()
Potato Peel Pie - Recipe No. 194 - The 1940's Experiment
Last month I watched a wonderful film called “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” and absolutely loved it. I loved it even more when 20 minutes into the movie a strange wartime dish called ‘Potato Peel Pie’ made an appearance, a insipid looking creation facilitating the gag reflex...the1940sexperiment.com
My grandparents were both from the UK. My mum and dad moved over here in the early 70's as Dad was offered a job on the building of a new hospital.@Moonothingie -- Yah, that's what I assumed as well -- that it was probably an acquired taste thing. (Perhaps your grandparents would be familiar with this pie, from years ago.)
No, they were trying to keep the kids from having a bunch of free periods. Schools here are a different animal. They have 9 periods a day, but don't have a class in every one of those periods. Some classes take up 2 periods, some only one, and they might have an hour or two with no class between two other classes. They didn't want the kids to have one class, then have like 3 hours until the next class. A lot of kids come from other towns... Some have to bike for over an hour to get there. So they can't just go home in between classes if they have that hour free. It's not fun to be stuck sitting there for 3 hours waiting for your next class. So they stuck all the classes in wherever they fit on that Tuesday so the kids didn't have to sit around waiting for a class. But it was just too much in one day! They didn't have any free periods. And then the next day they only had 3 periods, AND had a free hour. So moving the last class of the day from Tuesday, which is a 2 period class, and putting it on Wednesday made the days more even without adding free periods. Much nicer! It was just a matter of the schedule makers not seeing that option. My bet?
Some Manager or higher up wanted to "get his big manly pants" and ordered people around and ruined everything schedule wise.
