They don't get you everywhere but they it makes me happy
Right of way is really intricate here. There are so many exceptions and so many rules. I've always told the kids with riding their bikes that it's better to give up the right of way than be under a car, and there are actually signs in some places that say "right of way has to be given, not taken." A few years ago, my husband called me and told me he was alright, but he had been in an accident. A semi in the left lane wanted to get back into the right lane and didn't see him and fortunately, it just pushed him to the side. The whole drivers side was scraped up, but no one was injured. We had to have the driver's side door replaced....A was really young and asked if we could get the doors replaced with blue doors with red flames painted on. We had a red car. I think he was like 4 or 5. Anyway, those semis sit up so high, it's hard for them to see what's next to them.Just a suggestion that I used to highlight when I taught defensive driving. If you are in the right lane when vehicles are merging, if you have room move to the left lane. Yes, you have the right of way, but vehicles, especially large ones, have blind spots and cannot always see you and having the right of way will not keep you alive. There are many tombstones that could read... "But... I had the right of way". One of many little tricks we taught to avoid accidents instead of just reacting to either bad drivers or even legit reasons.
I think I heard on the news here that there were actually the same number of accidents even though it wasn't as busy on the roads because people just didn't follow the rules. They got used to there being almost no traffic that they didn't stop for red lights, or didn't look before they turned onto another street, etc, because they assumed there wouldn't be anyone there.I’ve read also that police have been writing a number of speeding tickets during the pandemic with some drivers being clocked on radar on empty highways driving more than 100mph.
Oh I'm sure you're right, and E probably knows that too, but she has a space in her heart for all creatures. She thinks it's unfair for us to exploit the labor of the horses for our own gain. She's also really interested in the research being done now to make meat artificially so that animals don't have to die for us to eat meat. And she loves science and says she'd like to do something with science that would help people. She doesn't know what form that will take yet, but she does LOVE doing research, so probably something involving research in order to provide products and/or services that fill a need in society. How can we improve technology to make medical procedures less painful or less invasive? What kinds of apps are needed to improve services for the disabled? That kind of thing. That's very considerate of E to care about the welfare of the horses (and I'm sure, she has a space in her heart for all animals).
I was curious about the ride to the castle, and looked up some photos online. What I saw were two draft horses pulling the wagon with passengers. (As a general fyi only -- large draft horses weigh anywhere from 1,400 - 2,000 pounds. They can safely pull 1.5 times their own weight, provided wheels are part of the pull, such in a wagon.) So, I thought I'd just pass that along. I've never owned any horses (draft or other), so I only know what I read today, via a quick Google search.
RMy first driving instructor (the jerk) scolded me for braking when some idiot 20-something men started crossing the street right in front of me, not at a crosswalk. What was I supposed to do, hit them?? He said that by slowing down, they thought I was giving them the right-of-way. Um, no, they stepped into the street and if I hadn't slowed down, I would have hit them. He told me if I did that in my road test, I'd fail. It's considered a right-of-way error, because I gave up my right of way to someone who didn't have it.
The highlighted is true here as well, but in defensive driving we taught that being part of ones personal safety is far more important then what somebody making a general rule that really is just going by the letter of the law. What it boils down to is this, if someone merges into you they are at fault and the is what the police report states, however, if you move over and avoid having that accident to begin with then you will have forgotten about it by the time you reach your destination. You won't have to explain it to anyone, fight the insurance companies for complete restitution or spend time in the hospital recovering from the accident or even your family paying to bury you. Seems like a small thing to practice generally. If they are such sticklers that they insist on following the rules even if you become the victim then do what they want during testing, get your license and then do the smart thing when on the road.Right of way is really intricate here. Here, they don't want you to drive defensively. If you have the right-of-way, they expect you to take it. I failed my first road test because I was driving too defensively, too cautiously. They teach you to drive 3-5 km/hour over the speed limit, whereas I'm used to driving just UNDER it. They don't want you to let someone in if they are trying to turn and it's busy. And you are expected to be able to time your merging according to the traffic already on the highway. You have to either speed up, or slow down so you can merge before the end of the ramp. You aren't supposed to rely on someone moving over, even if there's plenty of room. It's pretty cut-throat here. I usually do that, but in this case there was no way I could have done anything differently than what I did. I was over in what was the left lane. Another expressway comes in to form a new left lane, so the truck was in the newly formed left lane as I was in what was the middle lane, and the middle lane eventually becomes the right lane because the right lane becomes an exit only lane.Just a suggestion that I used to highlight when I taught defensive driving.
