One newscaster said living in winter weather states - treat a 1/4 tank of gas left in the car as near empty. One would be glad if the gas tank is full if stuck on an interstate with no help in sight.
I started carrying a CO2 detector after we got 20+ inches in southern Indiana over 13 years ago. Few people that had gotten stuck didn't think to shovel around the exhaust while they were idle. Spelunking taught me have at least 2 alternative light sources, 2 heat sources, MREs are yummy, etc.
Since we are on the winter weather side, don't forget the essentials 😁 ab52e97ce02e851e0d7881ed833a8a3c.jpg

You really don't need to do that for 10 minutes.

@FutureCEO
I throw out the number "10" simply as an example.
I go out to the car and turn it on. Then I return to my home.
After loading my backpack for school I grab my coat...put on my shoes and go out.
May it is only 7 minutes...maybe 9 minutes.....maybe 11 minutes at most.
Whatever.
This happens maybe 6 to 8 mornings in a 365 day year.
It's not a frequent habit at all. Have a nice night :)

I find it odd how VA hasn't sent the national guard to help people.
Yah, that's something I had also wondered about. But maybe since I-95 was a total parking lot of zillions of cars (some broken down/out of gas, etc.), it may not have been feasible. My concern was that most people did not have any food, and for those low on gas, how long could they keep warm? Hypothermia could have been a real issue for some of those folks. What an awful situation.

@John park hopper and @SteveBrickNJ -- gentlemen, with regard to the discussion about (not) running the engine to heat up car (and defrost window), just thought I'd mention to you that the poster lives overseas in the Netherlands. Their laws may be different than ours over here.
you are probably correct Minnie may be they have a police division for idling autos

Thank you. I knew that my friend. That's why I chose the phrase "many people on earth" instead of "many people in this country".
