That's more my husband's work life too. He is an engineer and works for a consulting company that gives advice about what kind of heating, ventilation, air conditioning system a building needs. And he does energy labels, which are the bane of his existence. His is the 8-5 job, 5 days a week. There's some flexibility there for things like needing to take a kid somewhere....he can start early and leave early. But in general, it's the standard rat race. And it's a small company...like 10 people or something.

I, on the other hand, work in a warehouse that also operates in the evenings and weekends. I have no particular education needed to do my job, where he has a masters degree in engineering. I mean, I have a bachelors degree in music education, but that's not much use to me at work other than I can impress my coworkers by belting along with the radio and not completely suck. And I have 300 coworkers, most of whom do not have the same schedule as I do and I couldn't tell you most of their names. We have a big BBQ in the summer, and a big Christmas party in December. I make an appearance at the BBQ, but don't stay too long. This past summer the BBQ went until something like midnight. I left around 7 or 8. I had just called my husband to come pick me up when a musical duo took the stage and I was so glad I didn't have to stay, because they were less than stellar and I was lucky to escape most of the screaching. But there's no plus one to any of the events at my work, nor at most of my husband's work parties. It's JUST the workers themselves, so it's not really that enjoyable to be hanging out with 300 people when I only really know 20 of them and only like half the ones I know. I avoid the Christmas party completely, because it's inside, so you're packed in like sardines and the music is LOUD. My husband's company only invited partners to the Christmas party one time because it was an anniversary year. I'm ok with that, because I'm not a party person anyway. It's just not my scene. Crowds, noise, usually techno music, which I hate.....no thank you!

As I’ve posted before, I don’t even have a college degree…all learned in HS vocational school, and on-the-job experience.
Can’t do it that way these days, though.
But, yea, your hubby’s job sounds similar to mine in regards to schedule, and flexibility if needed.
I, generally, love a good party, and always have, as does Carolyn…!!! :) And, fortunately, the firm has always invited our spouses/partners/significant others to our Christmas parties…!!! :)
Unless it had something to do with job security, I wouldn’t even go without her, though…!!!!! :inlove:

WOWZA!!! What a party! (I haven't seen gentlemen in white dinner jackets for ages. And I noticed one of the women in a beautiful sequined gown.) The partners at your firm really know how to throw a party. The closest I ever came to an event like that hosted by an employer, was years ago when I worked in the hotel industry. They had hotels at their beck and whim, and some of the spreads they'd put out for the holiday parties were jaw-dropping!

Thanks for sharing those photos -- your company really knows how to show its appreciation to the hard workers.

Thanks, Minnie…!!! :)
I mistakenly posted a coupla’ days ago that it was casual attire this year…glad I double-checked yesterday mornin’, because it was obviously more formal…!!!!! :hilarious:
And yes, our firm knows how to take care of us, AND throw a good bash…!!!!!!! :joyfull:
Hopefully, with Tesla now headquartered here in Austin, Samsung spending $17 billion in near-by Taylor, Texas, etc., the good times for our industry will continue, although, it sure is gettin’ crowded down here…!!! ;)

I remember when we stayed at AoA on our summer of 2012 family trip with my 60% CM discount. We stayed in “Cars” family suites, and really enjoyed it…!!! :)
We tried to do same on our summer of 2013 family trip, but, they had instituted CM discount blackouts, and the room rates had gone up significantly. We opted for family suites at ASMusic, where they honored the discount, and the room rates were more reasonable…!!! :)

School is out on the 22nd and then we go back on January 3rd. The students (and staff) are already a little stir crazy so these last 8 school days might be a little bumpy!
Weve got 5 school days left, and kids are bouncing off the walls apparently. DD13 is out after the 17th, doesn't return until Jan 11th. o_O Hopefully she'll be at the local Girls Inc assisting with elementary girls activities a majority of it, but they need a minimum number of girls to open. All the talk with the elementary girls assigned to her is what pranks the elf of the shelf has pulled and plans for Santa snacks to set out.

Partly agree with that. I would like to share, however, that the hiring model in (some) companies now is not for lifelong commitment employees. I recall being between jobs a few times (one of them, I was there 16 years). When I went on interviews for other jobs, I sensed that the hiring people (HR depts.) viewed my lack of being employed at a few different companies (within 16 years) as more of "inertia" on my part. That was bizarre to me, as I was a loyal employee, and gave 100%.

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to finally find another company that really appreciated my longevity, and I had good references, etc., and finally found a job at that point. I think it's a grab-bag nowadays, with a number of companies preferring independent contractors, etc., while some other companies may prefer a more traditional employee model, such as you and your dad.

And someone like me who might be getting a second job this pandemic. Unfortunately not overseas.

Just wait until Disney epic Star Wars hotel failure in March
I'm still laughing at how bad the whole thing has been.
Cheapek cheapened it so bad that it shows.

Hell, It almost felt like it was a 90's sitcom than an actual modern AD for a scifi based super expensive hotel.

And with reports of people consistently cancelling right before the cancellation limit... makes you wonder how many reservations are ACTUALLY real sure ones.

I don’t understand…
Darth asks Luke to take his (Darth’s) mask off, but, Luke says you’ll die if I take the mask off. Yet, he still takes it off, but, offers to take him away…what am I missing…???!!!!! :hilarious:

Simple: Vader knows he's dead.. Luke insists in taking him in a foolish attempt to save him ( I mean he just recovered the father he had lost for all his life).
He still takes the corpse for burning in the traditional jedi way.

To be clear, I wasn’t referring to you as being selfish.
The slackers **** me off too, and they seem to be the main problem, when it comes to large companies.
Carolyn works for a title company, and there is one older lady (yes, older than us…!!!!! :hilarious:) that works there that is a total slacker. Carolyn is either constantly having to help her with her work, or do it for her. It’s not a secret to management, so we wonder how she keeps her job. I guess if the company fired her for incompetence, she might sue them for age discrimination…?! No clue….:cyclops:
Oh, I didn't think you were calling me specifically selfish, just companies and the workers in general...like the attitude overall has changed in the last decade or so to be more selfish, that no one wants to do more than they have to. And I can sort of see that change in attitude, but I think the shift is more...not necessarily selfish, though for some it kind of expresses in that way, but just more towards standing up for oneself. I think decades ago, people felt like if they had a job, they shouldn't rock the boat, and they felt obligated to do whatever the boss wanted, even if it was beyond the confines of the contract or what was reasonable to ask. Now, people are starting to shift more to an attitude of "Maybe it's not worth it." I can bust my bum working every day and also taking extra shifts, giving up weekends and whatnot and be completely frazzled. Maybe I'll have more money, but is that what's healthy for me? So we start to rethink our priorities...maybe having that extra money isn't worth the work I'm having to do to get it. And bosses, in turn, are starting to see that people aren't willing to bend over backwards for peanuts anymore and are demanding more compensation for that extra work, and they feel like they are losing control, so they start making more demands to show their employees who's in charge. I can only speak from my experience, but I know I used to work SO hard and really did every thing I could to prove I was a good employee. I did the things that no one else seemed to want to do, followed the rules that no one else did, thinking it would set me apart. Then they gave me a terrible evaluation because they didn't see all those things I was doing as an asset. They only saw how many items I was able to scan in a certain amount of time, and how that compared to other people who weren't doing anything but scanning items. And the boss told me it was probably because I'm fat and I'd be able to walk faster if I lost some weight, but until I did, he wouldn't be scheduling me much because there were other people who were faster. (Yes, he got in trouble from HR, because he made similar degrading remarks to other people and everyone refused to sign their evaluations. He left a few years ago.) I realized there's no sense in busting tail because they don't notice it anyway. I was going above and beyond and they didn't even care, so they gave me a bad evaluation and told me they weren't going to give me hours. It changed the way I worked. I still follow the rules, and I still do everything to the best of my ability, but I don't do things without being asked, and I don't fix other people's mistakes. I don't work every available extra hour they ask people to do. I don't take on more than I'll get credit for. If things fall apart, it's not my responsibility. I do my job efficiently, and that's it. It's still more than some other people do. I used to be like Carolyn, but the management didn't see that I was picking up the slack for the slackers. I hope Carolyn is recognized for the work she does. I was not, so I stopped doing it.
