Marine Corps' birthday today. (My brother was a Marine years ago, so giving him, and others, a shout out.) :)

(I wonder how big a birthday cake must be, to feed all former and active Marines? :hungry: :joyfull: )

Seems like it was a "thing" back then. (My grandparents and my mother use to put mothballs in the off-season clothes closets.) I hated the smell and refused to use them. Found better alternatives, like cedar, for example. But then I stopped even using that years later. Rarely had any sort of moth problem, so didn't bother.

My mom and dad had a cedar closet and that smell really bothered me, more than mothballs actually. Maybe moths were a bigger than years ago but I haven't ever had any clothes or linens bothered by moths.

Thanks to all in military in defending freedom. I worked with retired military and also peers whose sons were KIA on missions in Afghanistan.

The difference is probably in the fact that all that stuff is now built to last over 100K miles without being changed. I also think it is deliberate done that way from the manufacturers. When I moved into my current apartment I had no place to store most of my tools. My son in law is getting use out of them now. But I am skeptical because I just took my VW in for an Oil/filter change. It came to $210.00. Special grade of oil required to keep the warrantee valid (Close to $10.00 per quart), Oil Filter (standard screw in cartridge $32) Cabin filter ($38.) Engine air filter, normal type but special size which they didn't have because even VW cannot secure their own requirement ($80) I had them just take it out and use their air compressor to reverse flow the filter and blow out whatever dirt that is in there. They looked at me like I had two heads, so I showed them how to do that. I had them rotate two tires and the rest was labor charges.

Yea, back in the day I remember an oil change was recommended about every 3,000 miles, now I think most are around 7,500-10,000 miles. A tune up (pre-electronic ignition) was recommended about every 10,000-12,000 miles (or once a year-ish), now I think most are every 75,000-100,000 miles, etc.
I think it’s also a combination of more crap being stuffed into, mostly, smaller engine compartments. You gotta’ remove major stuff to get to what used to be easy routine maintenance.
Ouch!!! on the “oil” change.

Doggie "downers". (Medicated pup ;)). Can't say for certain, as every pet is different, but many pet owners will get a mild tranquilizer prescription for pets when they travel.
That little dog I saw stick out his head in the little compartment of the female's traveler shoulder bag on the plane was a sight to see. The dog looked so calm, not even making a sound.

I don't know for sure, but I remember the moth ball fetish as well. Thinking about it though I think that there might have been a reason that it was more needed years ago then today. Today our houses are all pretty much sealed up. Even if we do open window, etc. we have screens that let air in and block the type of bugs (moths) that are attracted to lights at night. I'm sure in the time before AC and screened windows it left houses open to all types of bugs that cannot get easy access now.

Yea, for my car they recommend 10,000 miles, but being still stuck in the 3000 mile brain set, I have a hard time feeling good about waiting that long. When I leased the car I bought an option of two service visits, oil change, filters etc. However, I couldn't bring myself to wait that long. I had the first one done at 7000 miles and the second after 8000. Those two were part of the plan. This time I had it done, at an independent car service location, just after 8500. (total miles 23000) At the rate I have been driving I will have to do one more before the lease is through. What I did learn was that whomever, I take it too, they have to buy the parts from a VW dealer so I am not going to save any money by skipping them. I suppose that if we added up what we spent (if we didn't do it ourselves) with three oil changes in that same 10K it probably isn't all that different) Until I moved down here I always did my own oil changes, but now I have no place to do one and am to old to want to anymore.

I really like my Jetta, and my contract includes what it will cast me to buy the car at the end of the lease which might be a good deal considering how much used cars are selling for now. That said, however, if it is going to cost me that much for a simple oil change I might just look elsewhere for another vehicle. I would guess, based on current usage that the car will probably have less then 40K miles on it at that time but the warrantee expires at the same time my lease runs out (4 years or 80000 miles, whichever comes first). I am also having thoughts that my car may be either to young for me or I am to old for it, depending on one's outlook. I have another year and a half to think about it anyway.

I live next door to a huge CarMax location that has literally hundreds of vehicles for sale and just up the road two miles is an Auction Direct USA also with literally hundreds of cars on the lot. It is hard to see where the shortage is around here. Maybe it is just the big name dealers that are having a rough time coming up with trade in's because people have held back on buying a new vehicle.
