Growing up we never had ac. We did fine. The windows were always open and the fans were going. I think you’re right. We get dependent on it.
That may have been true for some. Unfortunately, many of us had no choice but to get through it. Can only speak for myself, but windows open and fans did little to help. As a kid, I was beyond miserable when it was hot and humid. Used to retreat to the cellar of our house, because it was a bit cooler down there. My mother used to say that I reminded her of a bear in hibernation -- but only during the summer months . . . :joyfull:

It was 103 in the sun this afternoon on my weather station in my backyard! 🥵
Now the well water pump went out around 7. My hubby and a neighbor are out in the rain trying to get it working. I can’t take a shower because we had only a trickle of water. We have four families on our well. 😟
Can't you take a shower in the rain, that water must be at least semi-warm.
The Latino guys that replaced my roof wore long sleeve shirts , bandanas , long pants and hats and the temp was 95 degrees. Up in the roof was probably much hotter. I actually copied them when I used to cut my own grass. It actually helped me get much less sunburn for one thing.
That was one of the first things that I witnessed when I first moved here. My external thermostat was reading 106 in the shade and they were dressed like you said up on this huge roof putting down black shingles. How they survived is anyone's guess, but that must work because the worked out in that all day long. That most be one of the highly coveted jobs that so many are worried about taking away from "mericans".

Back in the day I read a lot of books but had little money to buy them. I spent a lot of time at Barnes &Nobles bookstore sitting on the couch reading for hours in the AC or keeping cool reading at the public library.

Same in my house growing up, no AC. Just fans if it got really hot and open windows. Our basement was very cool so we spent a lot of time down there if it got really hot and humid. My husband had AC in his house as a kid/teen so he likes to have it on more than I do.

Believe me I was almost tempted! 😂

From what I've heard the college program kids are helping filling a lot of roles that Disney is having a hard time filling. The niece works a lot of hours because of a shortage of people. I can believe that there may be a covid breakout of sorts but I don't think they are sending people home for that. But maybe this girl has a different role or something in the CP program.
She was supposed to be working the Haunted Mansion attraction. That much I know, because they posted pictures of her in her costume. Her first program, she worked merchandise and was primarily at Mouse Gear in Epcot. Then her 2nd program, from which she was sent home because of covid was originally supposed to be Jungle Cruise ride operation. She was really excited about it, but said the amount of text to be a skipper was kind of daunting. I don't know what happened, but do you remember when that Jungle Cruise boat sank? I asked her mom if she was ok when that happened and she told me the girl had been transferred to Haunted Mansion the week before. Then they sent everyone home, and she was just asked to come back again a few weeks ago, and now she's already leaving again. But the way it was worded, I don't think SHE was sent home...I think it was her choice to leave. OR she was sent home, but not for Covid-related reasons. She said she was not upset to leave the Disney company because they had "screwed her over", and she mentioned several kids being in limbo, and a bunch of cases of covid in her complex, but I know she wasn't in limbo with her job....she had her assignment and her costume and everything, and she said some kids were sent home, but didn't say that she was one of them. So I'm just not sure if it's entirely accurate. It's possible that some people got fired and she didn't want anyone to know so she said she left, or it's possible that she wanted to go home to be with her mom and that they didn't give her the option of having time off so she quit the program, or it's possible that it's exactly as she represented it. I have no idea, but if your niece hasn't heard of anyone being sent home for Covid reasons, I think it's not likely that that's the reason behind it. I could be wrong, though. But I did wonder, if they start sending kids home again, does that mean they are gearing up to go back to more restricted access in the parks because the numbers were rising? Are they rolling back the openings?

Yes that is a good question. To answer how four houses work. First, it does when you don’t have a drought, someone runs the well dry by abusing water, or something in the well breaks down. We have managed fine.
Around here in the 80s they built, aka a subdivision, with so many houses. The rule then was four houses per well. Our subdivision is 8 so two wells. We just happen to have one on our property. The other one is on house near the cul-de-sac. And we just found out their well got replaced a few weeks ago. The ruling is different now. I think two per well.
We have only had to replace the pressure part that pulls the water up the pipes once since 1982. We got close to running out of water during the drought years ago but that was it.
Last week I got the power bill for the pump. I knew something was wrong. It jumped from $30 to $85.
DH and one of our neighbors got down there last night and replaced the pressure part but the pump was not cutting off. We had some water but not much.
DH called a well guy this morning. I have to meet with him to see what it is. If the pump has to be replaced, we are looking at around $4500 and up. And he can’t replace it until tomorrow.
So not going to be a good day today.😟
But on a positive note, we at least have money to pay for it. 😊
Well, if there are 4 houses on the well, do you divide the cost of fixing it with all 4 home owners?
