All this talk of Target.....I just saw one of their commercials as I was getting ready to head in for work......
You know, I tried to be attracted to Target, but as of yet, it hasn't happened. We have Targets on close to every street corner around here and I have seen the posts that condemn Walmart but talk like the Queen of England would make a trip across the pond just to shop in a Target.

The Walmart's around here are clean, organized and well stocked, I have two within two miles of me and a huge Target just a half mile away they always look look like a store getting ready to close up. I've honestly tried but can find nothing superior about Target over Walmart. (prices tend to be higher at Target) The employees at Walmart always ask if they can help you find anything only if you look even a little confused. Target's ignore you with the hopes that you will leave soon. I combine my retail and grocery shopping which is possible at all of them but Walmart has so many more choices of Groceries and Target looks more like an after thought with limited variety.

Perhaps, I am lucky and the area just is managed better, but I see no reason to use Target over Walmart.

I assume all these (Target and Walmart) are probably franchise-run, right? The Targets up here are very good. Can't comment on Walmart as those are quite a distance away, so I never go there.

Perhaps in your area, the Walmarts are better managed?

@Tony the Tigger and @Figgy1 , as it turns out, I wanted some cooked rotisserie chicken ( :hungry: ) this morning, so I went to Stop and Shop to buy one. Delicious. :joyfull:

While I was in there, I looked in the pasta aisle and no fusilli. Then I happened to be walking by an aisle that had a section of all kinds of items from a company, Pastene. It was there that I actually found 1 package of fusilli ! HA! No wonder I've never seen it before. Anyway, I bought the package ($2.99) to eventually try out. What's even funnier is that Pastene had all kinds of things with some decent stock -- but the part of the shelf with fusilli was barren -- just ONE package left of fusilli -- :p And I bought it -- some fusilli fan will now be ticked off that there isn't any left to buy. :hilarious:

Good question! I don't think they are Franchise. I think they are all company owned, but I never really gave it a thought before.

I just looked it up and the first sentence said... "there is no such thing as a Walmart franchise". Further research found that there is also no such thing as a Target franchise either.

After I posted this I saw that @Figgy1 had already answered it, so between the two of us (beauty and the beast) we must be correct.

Both stores are corporate owned and run
Interesting. I wonder why some of them are very well run, and others not so much. (And I'm basing this on comments from various people, in different locations, down through the years.) I don't have any stake in either one of them, but it does make me curious as to how some get high praise, and others don't. (They all pretty much sell the same stuff, with some regional variances.)

At the risk of raising some wrath, probably the areas that they are in plus the difference in actual managers and their ability to run something that big. Not everyone is a retail tycoon or as invested as an actual owner. Those that excel are probably focused on the big titles at corporate!

This article pretty much nails why I hate WalMart, especially the last point about quality. Target has much better quality.

Grocery shopping should be done at a regular grocery store. You'll spend much less money when you do coupon cutting and shop based on the sales.

Interesting articles.

What I can't figure out (overall) is just how well Walmart does -- it's one of the largest worldwide retailers, from what I've read. Hence, for all the various complaints voiced by some customers, the stores still seem to be doing well financially.

The supermarket and sale is cheaper isn't true when it comes to produce and both Walmarts in my area have good produce departments

Humans react to a lot of varied things. Status is one and Walmart has been labeled as the poor mans store. They have been criticized for how much they pay the help and a lot of things that are probably valid, but the obsession with quality is not a good thing to compare. Any brand name that is thought to be quality is the same no matter where you buy it. Manufacturers do now shut down and alter there entire process because they are selling to Walmart. That is a fallacy! Even Walmart brands are hardly any different, if at all then the non-generic items. Mostly it is just a label change. I did hear a joke that I thought was funny though and it went like this.. "I see a lot of people going into Walmart but not many coming out! I buy the meat anyway!" 11 of the 12 don't buys are things that I don't buy anyway. I do buy some of the meat, mostly hamburg, pork, chicken and even fish and have had no issues with any of it. I have found that steak is not their thing and have never had a good steak from them yet.

The popularity chart I see stops at 2014. It may be correct but a lot of water has run under the bridge since 2014 and I would be more interested in seeing a more current chart before I comment on it.

One thing you never see mentioned about Walmart is that they indeed provide a lot of entry level jobs for people that may otherwise be unemployable. I have seen so many people with disabilities working hard and are proud to be an employee of Walmart because otherwise they would be either homeless and/or completely dependent on the public dole.

Oh, it's like off the charts financially. I had a project in college where we looked at major retailers. We had to take Walmart off because it was an outlier and would severely mess up the rest of our statistics. Amazon has since started catching up with them, though they still fall short. Target is still much smaller.
