Got a couple more messages from my aunt RE: connecting to wifi. I'm assuming she never called Xfinity to get her network name and password as I instructed her to do because the messages came too quickly for there to have been a call. Her other son bought her a tablet not too long ago, and I don't think she ever got that connected to the internet, either (which is part of why I don't think she has wifi).

"These kinds of frustrations cause road rage!!!"
"Nothing is easy anymore."

If she lived closer, I'd just go to her place and help her. UGH.

Suggest she contact the folks that provide her internet access. They can determine if she has Wifi or not and if not find a way to provide it. It might cost something, but that is the nature of the beast. Usually if they can see a sale of a Wifi connection they will set it up for her. Without the Wifi t'aint no one can connect it to Wifi. One of the things that I found by being a senior citizen that has a pretty good grasp on computers, I still do not understand the terminology and meanings of many things. I will sometimes look at instructions and it might as well be Greek.

Sorry, for some reason I didn't see the Xfinity part of your post. Sorry, my bad! Simple wording like contact the company that you pay every month for your internet connection. (Xfinity) That is just a suggestion, because she may be mostly able to figure things out, but is timid about contacting the big companies for fear of it becoming a very costly adventure. It is amazing how stubborn we old folks can be.

She's contacted them before and said it was horrible (my guess is because she literally knows absolutely nothing about anything technical, and Xfinity's techs aren't great at dealing with people who are out of touch). I wish my cousins (her 3 kids) would get off their lazy butts and help her - they live WAY closer (I'm a couple of hours away).

I get the lack of understanding...I really do. Technology advances so quickly and our older peeps are at a disadvantage to begin with because the big leap occurred (roughly) half-way through their lives, so they're constantly playing catch-up. (It feels odd to say this as I'm coming up on 50 myself!) My mom has a huge advantage, since she knows I'm just a phone call or short drive away, and I've taught her a bunch (just enough to get into major trouble, lol), and she's managed to hang onto a lot of what I taught her...with a quick phone call to me to refresh anything she forgets or to help her troubleshoot.

I'm doing a lot of playing detective for my aunt...she lives in a room she rents from a friend and accesses the internet on her phone...she doesn't have a lot of money, and with the issues she had with the tablet in the past, I'm thinking she doesn't actually have internet service in her name and is accessing the internet via cellular service on her phone. Adding to this suspicion is that she assumed connecting to the internet would be automatic (no login required for a first-time connection on a new device).

I may give my mom a ring later and see if she wants to go visit her sister (my aunt) in the next week or so we can get this sorted out.
