I called my stepdad the day after and the day after that after he got his first vaccination. He is all alone also. I call him a few times a week. He is 84 now and I worry he is alone and have begged him to sell his house and move in with us. He is still able bodied and thinks our house would just be too noisy for him with the kids and pets. He has lived alone for over 20 years now since my mom passed and I got married. He also for some reason doesn’t want to leave Queens for the country of PA. Makes me sad actually. I worry about him.
That is something that I don't have worry with my parents. My parents are younger than your stepfather, but my parents with some stuff need help.

The fact is my dad had triple bypass back in the 2010s and he gets treatment for knees. His knees are not meant to do some stuff anymore and needs help. My dad has the worst odds of the family getting covid-19 and will be getting the 2nd injection next week.

I help my dad for the outside Christmas decorations for bringing them in and out as a result. He still uses the snow blow or use the shovel, but he has help.

My mom has fibromyalgia and has her good and bad days as result. She is now going to have it for 25 years. She needs help for some stuff as a result at times.

Yea, if any good comes out of this unprecedented situation, it’ll definitely be an attempt to improve the power grid for any future situations like this.
As another member has posted, and I’ve also posted before, Texas has its own power grid. It seems to work much better in hot summer conditions, but, there can also be a strain on the system if it’s really hot for several days, as so many are running their A/C almost non-stop during the heat of the day.
The Governor has even recommended that top ERCOT officials resign.
As for me, I’m sittin’ in my car defrosting/de-icing it...yet again...!!!!! :hilarious:
Texas leaders are in climate change denial And mock states alike Cali. While unprecedented it is climate change happening throughout the country And world. Some states acknowledge others are deniers. Illinois has one of the best grids other states like Texas ignored adjusting improvements to their grids For big business profits. When residents don’t vote or vote for for business over families safety amaze me. Our taxes in Illinois are ridiculous but we have power and water. Refusing to vote has consequences. We live with those choices. Power grids will take a decade or two to improve. Crazy.

As a tip from one of your favorite Northerners (oh, not that you ever said that -- I just made that up!! :hilarious: ), it's good to start up your car each day, when it's in the deep freeze. This keeps the battery working properly.

When it's safe to drive (i.e., no ice on streets), take it out for a spin. (Best if you can get it out on a highway at higher speeds for a brief stretch -- as that's better than slower, local driving -- only during frigid times, for the battery.) I read about this tip years ago, so I'm just passing it along (at no charge! :p ) as you're not used to the deep freeze.

Even if the roads aren't good it's still a good idea to run the car for 20 minutes or so in the driveway during a deep freeze.
