It's really sad, because you'd think that having graduated, they should be able to at least handle basics! My husband has met his share of idiots. The company he works for is only a consultancy firm. They do calculations and then give advice about what kind of system a particular building needs for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, etc. So they were working on a design for a swimming pool, I think? And there was something wrong with the showers. Brand new facility, but the showers weren't working properly....they were too hot I think? All my husband had to do was look at the design to see that the people who had built it and moved some filter or something and put it on the wrong end, so where cold water was supposed to mix with the hot, it couldn't because the cold water didn't make it to that point. Or a month back or so there was something about a heating system where it uses water to heat the floors, but they forgot to add a water source. They had all the pipes in there, but nowhere for the water to fill them. Or a ventilation system without a place for the air to come in. Stuff like that. And he's the one that has to call the installation company and tell them it won't work the way they want to do it, etc. Like you said, it makes you wonder where they got their degrees. I'm not at all an engineer, but even I understand if you are using water to heat things, you have to have a water source.

They are in the process now of changing how energy labels are calculated. He's been doing it for years, but they are changing the process now and he's having to take courses to learn how the new system works. So he read through the book and the course materials...then he's doing the course (Online) and I can hear him questioning the teacher "In the book it says you need to use this as the default if we don't know this calculation." Then the teacher is confused, because he'd just told them you needed to use some other calculation...so is the book right or is the teacher right. And throughout the day, I hear him do this several times....ask which information is correct or ask for clarification about something. He has to take an exam on Friday about this, and out of 1000 people who have already taken this test, only 30 have passed it....and the person teaching the course hasn't taken the test yet. :banghead: So the teacher doesn't even know what he's doing and my husband is having to correct everything he says that isn't what the book says. The teacher half jokingly tells my husband that they are looking for people to teach the classes if he is interested. As to your first

As to the first part, I don't even understand how mistakes of that magnitude can happen...?!?!?! :cyclops:
We have checklists for everything...a design checklist, a construction document checklist for each sheet/drawing (elevations, electrical, interiors, etc.), and then we have someone that all they do is double check drawings before final sets are electronically stamped and signed by a partner for final distribution. We are known not only for the quality of our designs, but also for the quality of the CD's (construction documents) we produce to build such from.
Those are unbelievably HUGE mistakes you mentioned. Just WOW.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I used to do both design and CD's, but, I've done design exclusively for about 3 decades.
I would hafta' do some brushing up to produce full sets of CD's again, but, they don't need me to, so that'll probably never be something I need to do again.
I'm sometimes given tasks to do, and then one of the other partners asks why I'm workin' on that, as my time is more valuable than that and I need to be crankin' out designs, and they have others for that stuff...!!!!! :hilarious:
My nickname around here has always been "Dr. Roof" (a play on Dr. Ruth Westheimer from the 80's, for you older members ;)).
I'm the go-to guy for all issues roof, among other things.
Classic example from earlier today...
One of the partners was building a SketchUp model of a house currently in design. He got it to a certain point, and then was stumped about what to do with the rest of the roofs, so he handed it off to me for my input on possible solutions. This ol' dog is just glad, grateful, and blessed he's still relevant in this game...!!!!! :D:hilarious:

Roof issues, then all major roof issues solved...!!! :)

I'm so sorry:(:(:(
It is what it is. Beyond my control, anyway. At least the schools are closing...we've been wanting schools to go to remote since they started back up again in September. And since my husband has been at home for the last couple of months anyway, this isn't a huge change for us. I still have to go to work as always, and grocery stores will be open, and those were pretty much the only places I was going anyway. I did go to the centrum maybe twice in the last month to get things I needed, and I'm glad I went when I did. So it won't really be any different for US, except I can't do driving lessons. I hate them anyway, but I only had one left before my road test and I was looking forward to hopefully being done. Now it will be a while. On the upside, now they'll have to postpone my test, which means when things open back up again, I'll have a few more lessons to practice before the road test, so hopefully I'll be more confident. Always a silver lining, right?

Well the swimming pool shower one was one my husband designed I think, handed it off to the client, and then when the guys went to install it, they either put the filter thing in the wrong place, or they didn't think it mattered, so they put it in a different place. I remember my husband was able to see immediately what they did and it wasn't what he had designed. The other things, they are designs that an architect drew up and they had no knowledge of heating/ventilation, etc...I actually think that one was maybe for an energy label? So my husband is the one who does that for his company. So a company contacts them and asks for an energy label, and my husband has visit the site, do all the measurements, etc, and then he asked about this type of heating that they were installing. It's a new building that's still under construction, so it's not finished yet, and they need to make it to a certain energy efficiency level. So then my husband starts asking questions because he can't do the calculations without knowing, for example, where a heater is in relation to a window, etc. So he was like....well...where's the water source for the floor heating? And they were like....well there's the kitchen and the bathroom....and he's like, no for the pipes for the floor heating....they aren't connected to the kitchen or bathroom. They need a faucet to fill the pipes with water. The guy had no idea what he was talking about. They just hadn't designed that. They designed the pipes in the floor, but not the water source. But I'm not sure who did the design on that one. But you're right....those are huge mistakes. My husband was SO frustrated after talking to the guy on the phone with that one.

Well, my road test is going to be canceled. I had my driving lesson this morning and my instructor told me it's probably the last one for this year, which confused me, because I still have one left, and then my test is scheduled for the 31st. But our cases reached 10,000 again yesterday, and after months of dragging feet, the cabinet has finally decided to call for a lockdown, starting tonight at midnight and going until January 19th. All non-essential stores, all contact-businesses (hair salons, massage, etc) and that includes driving schools.

Really sorry to hear your driving test is cancelled. You've worked so hard to get your license over there, only to be sideswiped by covid lockdowns. Can they schedule you after Jan. 19th, or are they waiting to see how the case numbers rise or fall by that date?
