If you don't want to buy him a phone for awhile, just don't buy him a smartphone. I think you can still get flip phones that would just be used for emergencies or for scheduling rides etc...

He would complain to no end. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚... but, your idea is very good. I could just tell him ā€œno phone, or flip phone. There is no other option.ā€ Seriously, I donā€™t know what all of these 10 year olds are doing with iPhones... I just canā€™t see any reason for it... not til age 12 minimum.

We still have a home phone btw.. Iā€™m old school like that, itā€™s also doubled as a reason for not getting a mobile for him. He talks to his friends for an hour though, on the phone.šŸ™„.. but theyā€™re not really conversations, theyā€™re playing Roblox.šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

My little cousins both have phones... they're 11 and 9.

I can kind of see it because their parents aren't together, so they're in between houses, but at the same time, they're horribly attached to their phones. I take them to the airport with my grandma so they can visit my aunt (their grandmother) in South Carolina, and I instituted a rule about the phones when they're with me (because my grandma told them the first time we did this that I was in charge; she needed the break apparently šŸ˜‚). I told the older one that she could pull out her phone to text one parent when we got to the airport that we were there, and then again when they boarded, and then when I picked them up, she could text her mother that they had landed and then again when we were in the car, and then when I dropped them off.

I have to take them to the airport next weekend. Hopefully I get no argument; I anticipate some bad behavior because of the whole situation with little structure in their lives.

I never had a cell phone until I was in my mid 20s and that was a flip phone. We all managed and survived without one. In terms of being left home alone or with my younger brother I was 10. Calling the next town pre cell phone was $.05 per minute so we didn't talk long.

I was 14 when I got one. Flip phone on pay as you go. It was 25 cents a minute. I was allowed to call Mom with it. Eventually it went down to 10 cents a minute. Eventually I got a phone with a keyboard so I could text. It was college before I had a Smartphone (I had iPod Touches in between). I didn't have a data plan until my last semester of college, and my parents weren't paying for it for very long; I switched over to paying for it myself. I'm still on prepaid because it's wayyyy cheaper; I just pay for phones out of pocket. My company has a relationship with Samsung, so I get decent pricing on their devices.

But yeah, I see no need for a ten year old to have anything more than a flip phone for the purposes of calling Mom and Dad.

That makes a little more sense to me. My reasoning when he asks (constantly) is the following..

His electronic/trendy-all-the-kids-have-one devices.. and his list is much smaller than a lot of kids, for sure..

Nintendo Switch.
iPad
Amazon Fire (whatever the newest one is, last one died and bought a new one this year)
Amazon Echo.
Fitbit.
Gaming headphones.
Beats by Dre headphones.
Bluetooth speakers.
- Iā€™m sick of stepping on chargers for all of these things. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

The reason we have a Fire and iPad is because Iā€™d rather him take the Fire when I have a doctors appt or something, because he had dropped and broke an iPad a few years ago, the other is much cheaper to replace. Though tbh, I doubt that would happen now.

He wants an iPhone 11 and Apple Watch, though only 2 of his friends have an Apple Watch, most have Fitbits..nothing against the parentsā€™ decision, but like, why does a 9/10 year old need either one of those Apple products??
We can text and FaceTime thru the iPad when Iā€™m not home... he can do the same with his friends.. they also use FB messenger for kids on the Amazon Fire..with the friends who donā€™t have an iPad.

He also constantly complains that heā€™s ā€œthe only kid who doesnā€™t have a PlayStation or Xboxā€ šŸ™„...ummm..youā€™re not, and even if you are, I donā€™t care, there is no reason for 2 gaming systems, imo.

Add to all of that, he plays Roblox or Minecraft on the computer often.. so no way am I adding another device that can have games. Heā€™ll be getting a new laptop this year for school.. but I have stressed that itā€™s not an add on for video games. I just feel like this is so many things that need to be charged.. and too much reliance on electronics (as I type on my phone).., but I just really think that a smart phone is not a needed or justifiable addition.

Every family is different. And as the times become more and more modern, the problems and solutions are also modern. You survived without one because you had to. So did I. But I can list off the top of my head at least a dozen times in my life that would have been completely different if I could have just called my mom on a cell phone.

My daughter is only five, but I still consider getting her a phone every single time she's at her dad's house. I want her to be able to reach me if she needs me. Or reach him if I have another stroke or something and she cannot wake me up. Every family is different.

But if you got her a phone would it be one of the new ones or a simple text/phone style. Maybe that might be a good compromise for @21stamps ?

Thank you for this list! Never thought of checking EWG for beans. Now I can see which brands are free of glyphosate. Unbelievable. @figmentfan423 how do you get really smooth hummus? Mine is always so gritty. I use canned beans.
I cook them in the pressure cooker for at least an hour, let them cool to just about room temperature and process them for twice as long as you think you need to. I put them on before going to bed and make hummus in the morning
