No, we’re just old and remember feeling the same as you. 😂

Choosing a school and a major is important, I think it’s great to apply to a few schools and definitely take tours.. but at the end of the day, a mistake can be corrected if you feel that it’s not the right path for you.

My undergrad is in Poli Sci... chosen specifically for a certain path I thought I would take, but then realized I wanted a different path. It all worked out in the end. :).
Ideally, every single person would know exactly what they wanted to do and what school is best for their long term goal, but it’s unreasonable to think that every single high school kid can make those decisions without ever changing their mind.
It is great to hear these stories. It does seem that the counselors want me to pick a career or at least narrow it down to like 3 options and go with those. Why does it have to be a certain number? This was also told to me while I was in the 10th grade. I am going into the 11th grade this year. It just seems crazy to me. I will come up with something when I have to and I will go to a college that I want to go to. Those two things I do know.

The Cheer Coach at my High School is basically a History Teacher who is our Faculty Sponsor for Cheer. She just grew up doing cheer and when she became a teacher she also took on that responsibility. I guess it also gets her some extra pay in her check too. I am young, but your daughter is really young and we actually both have time to think about this sort of things. It is awesome she has these goals though. It is also awesome that she has a parent that supports them. That is why I love my mom and dad so much. I know they are hard on me and pushing me, but I know it is because they love me. I may get annoyed with them from time to time, but I do know what they are saying to me is because they care. I could have parents who don't care at all and I would be even more of a mess than I am already. 😂

You can still coach or instruct without being your career.. sorry I missed part of the convo and didn’t realize what exactly was being discussed, I thought I was general college selection. Oops!

You can be an instructor during college and earn more money in less hours in something you love, instead of working summers at a seasonal job like a lot of other students do. You can also continue to coach afterwards, while still having a different career. Something like private training.

Yes!! There are some things where the adults know better than the kids.. it’s our job to show them and direct them towards better long term goals.

Btw, I wish T had some streamlined goals right now. He changes all of the time. He’s been on a big Police officer kick for a while, he’s also said architect, and for a long time it was engineer.
The only thing I know for sure is that he does not want to go in the medical field at all. He said he doesn’t want to see other people’s blood and guts.
Youngest loves blood and guts. :hilarious: She loves watching youtube videos on how the body works. My ds on the other hand wants nothing to do with blood or guts. He had tears in his eyes yesterday. He is 16 so I go to him and ask why he would be crying. I couldn't believe the answer. He said it was because yesterday was the one year anniversary of some Nintendo announcement.

My first choice was Law, but the more I looked into it, and the more I spoke and observed family members who are attorneys, the more I started to change my mind.

So, I decided I would major in History while I decided. My dad nixed that right away. He said he would not pay for me to get a degree in something that would be useless for me. That one was obviously out.

I settled on PoliSci, because I could go different directions from there, I could change my mind about law and not lose all of my credits.. and also lobbying was something that was very attractive to me, I was leaning towards that as my end goal.

I do not have a career in any of the above.lol.. I went a totally different direction after school, pretty much by chance.. but, the degree paid off because I have been heavily involved in politics for over two decades (though not as heavily the past few years as I was prior to having an elementary aged child), and that got my foot in the door with a lot of opportunities- though none of these were my main source of income.

It is easier if you know from the start, but if not, it’s ok, as long as you do not choose a relatively useless major, of which too many do exist these days, unfortunately

There have been times I got poison ivy so bad on my hands the skin would blister and crack and bleed, nothing would stop the spreading. The only thing was trip to the doctor and shot of cortisone-- start to clear it up within 2 days. Word to the wise guys especially if you have it on your hands (hasn't blistered yet and you don't know it) it can be transferred to other parts of your body -- if you get my drift (very pain full) learned the hard way
I had it for a month. I heard Naphtha soap works well on it. Dh used it after he got it a couple of years ago. It worked somewhat. We have a soap now that if you use it withing a couple of hours of being exposed will prevent a reaction.

This actually part of the conversation was about @MySmallWorldof4 9 year old daughter wanting to have a career to be a Cheer Coach. I don't really want to be a Cheer Coach even though I love cheering for my high school squad. I have even thought in the back of my head cheering in college, but I struggle enough with the academic part of high school I don't know about adding that in college.

Then, I started rough sketching on this one in Austin, that I’m now continuing in CAD.
As you may notice...the joys of designing around an old 41” oak, and it’s “critical root zone” on a small lot...!!!!! :hilarious:

The offending oak from a Google Earth shot...!!! ;):)

How hard do you think it would be to close off a 2 story foyer? We have one, but it is wasted space. We could use it as a loft space on the second floor. It also allows for tons of echoing in the house. We can hear someone speaking from the first floor all the way in the attic. The space is maybe 10X10.

Ha ha! They’re definitely not all Perry Mason, which is what attracted me in the first place 😂

Out of all of the attorneys who I knew then, and know now, very few are actually trial lawyers, which is what I wanted to do. I would go to their offices for a “career day” and ask why they had so much boring paperwork and meetings.lol. One of my cousins, who was always so special to me (the one who gave me a Jane Eyre collectible), was a criminal defense lawyer in NYC. Her job and life was exciting in my eyes.. but I didn’t want to do criminal defense, and prosecutors didn’t make the kind of money that I wanted to make. 😂😂

Oh well. 🤣

Speaking of hair dye... my sparkles are fantastic right now.... ugh..... I haven't dyed my hair in years because I refused to do the upkeep... but maybe I should find a semi permanent dye like pink or purple to cover up these silvers!
To be honest, I would be beside myself with joy if I had a head full of silvers. Be grateful that you have lived long enough to get those silvers and that you do not have male pattern baldness. No dye or color will naturally cover that up!!!

My mom and dad both have careers that they have had there whole lives. They got Masters degree for them. My mom works as a Dietitian/Nutritionist at a Senior Living Facility and my dad works as a Computer Software Engineer. So they both pretty much knew what they wanted and went and got it. Me not so much and it gives them headaches. Like I said I know they just want the best for me, but it is a lot of pressure when people are asking me to choose what I want as my career. Heck all I am qualified to do right now is babysit. :)

Thanks! James is doing his for school credit, right? I think you're right that that's a bit intense for E, at least right now. She's just turned 14 less than a month ago, so this might just be a passing phase. She is trying to learn how to write in it, and she's been watching videos about the kawaii culture for years. When we went into the Japan pavilion last summer, she was explaining all the art to us. So she's been interested in it for a while, but it's mostly just when she has nothing else to do, she'll watch some videos. I think she'd enjoy a more structured class, but not something so intense that she gets stressed if she is short on time.
James is getting high school language credits but it's more like a college course, doesn't meet everyday, lots of independent work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. My kids have used Duolingo and Babbel. I paid for Babbel but it expired. How is Memrise?

I love it. I paid for the money version when they were doing one of those 40% off sales but you can get by with the free one.

But so far they do 4 things.

1. Flashcards
2. You type the words
3. Listen to locals speaking
4. You speak which honestly, they could teach how they do pronunciation

and unlike Doulingo, you repeat everything over and over again so you gain it ingrained in your mind. If there was anything left out, I would have to say the reason why some words end a certain way (essen, haben or how the sentence structure is completely backwards than English for example), I'm learning German.

My dh helped out doing that once and it didn't take too long.
