@MySmallWorldof4 , do you have netting around your plants? I really don’t want to do that, the berry bushes are on the side of my deck, the rest of the veggies run down the length of the side of the house, I don’t have a legit garden area... I used areas where I plant flowers every year.

This garden thing was too much time and money to feed the animals, I’m not as nice as dryerlintfan.lol. If it doesn’t work this year, then I’m not planting again!

To clarify, lol, I don't go through the trouble of an actual garden every year. I plant a couple things that live forever like berries, and I'll plant the food in my cupboard that starts growing plants because I forgot about them. And we save our seeds from foods and seeing if they sprout anything. But I don't go out and weed and water any more than I would flowers or other side yards. I don't want to give you the impression that I'm out there putting real effort into this so the animals can eat it. I'm saying because the animals eat everything, I don't plant anything for myself. We had two failed years of gardening and then I was just done. Whatever wasn't eaten by animals molded because we live in such a humid climate. I could have used some sprays on it, but I buy organic so if I cannot grow organic, what's the point, you know?

Makes sense! At this point I think it’s birds. They blackberries were on the top of the plant, and it doesn’t look like another animal would be able to just eat the berries and leave everything else intact, but who knows.
one of the blueberry plants is in a planter, just now starting to look like it’sgetting berries, so I guess I’ll know with that one.

I’m sure you were frustrated those 2 years. I’m starting to realize that this was a mistake.

A few shots from today’s hike. Started by the lake at Greenbrier State Park. View attachment 475399
Then up a VERY steep access trail to the AP. It was about half a mile and 1000ft elevation change. Yikes. Very pretty flora on the way up. View attachment 475400

Pretty close to the midway point of the Appalachian Trail.
View attachment 475401

Got to a pretty nice view.
View attachment 475402

About 4 miles along from our start. Took about 2 hours, but that first half mile was almost an hour. Another great view looking back - you can see the lake where we started in the distance.

4 miles back - and the painful downhill really beat up my bad knees. But a great hike and good to get out for 4 hours with nature!

So pretty! Not a huge fan of steep hills but looks like the view was worth it.

Hubs and I have hiked various trails (in the Northeast and also in Colorado), over the years.

To me, the most important tool to have is an USGS topographical map. When those little separation lines (of elevation) come very close to one another -- look out. That will guarantee a more difficult climb.

Anyway, glad that you and your family had a nice day, and thank you for sharing your photos. :)

I've done a little hiking in Colorado and lots in the National Parks out west and in Canada (plus Alaska last summer on excursions from our cruise). I do have a topographical map app on my phone, but the access trail wasn't on it, so we didn't know if the trail would have lots of switchbacks or go straight up the hill... definitely straight up the hill! It's a relatively new trail and doesn't appear on most trail maps and apps. Had we been prepared for that kind of hiking (mentally), it likely would have gone better. :)

This hike was with one of my oldest friends. We've had 90 straight days of quality family time, so this was a little time away from them (and most welcome)!

I think that next time we go, we will park at a different location to access the AT to avoid that steep start! There's a lot just about 2.5 miles from that viewpoint (Annapolis Rock - no, you can't see the city of Annapolis from it, it faces the wrong way and is about 80 miles away), but we wanted a little more mileage yesterday!

I might have to try that one when allergy season calms down.

The trail we've been doing near home is nice for me, but flat.

Spray them with chilli powde, I believe. I'll ask my mom what she does exactly, but basically, she does something along those lines. It keeps the animals off and then she just washes the produce before we eat it. For the stuff we're not eating, she uses a thing called Deer Off.

She also does a couple of earth boxes and does netting around those. Those are where she does her tomatoes and cucumbers.

OMG extremely frustrating. Honestly A wants to garden so I offered her one rubbermaid tub. She wants to plant watermelons so I don't have to worry about it quite yet. Honestly I would LOVE to have a garden and grow my own food, but I grew up in a school bus and just don't have a green thumb. Plus my favorite veggies are like... broccoli and sweet corn and zucchini and brussels sprouts,..... all of which go on super sale when they're in season. We eat a lot of edamame too but we prefer that from the freezer section. So after spending a couple years trying to grow food in the yard, I realized I spend a lot more money on the home grown ones and don't notice a difference in flavor because we already buy organic and farm fresh where we can. So I choose to save myself the time.

If I were really into gardening, I think it would be different. Like if it brought me peace to weed and cultivate, I'd probably really love it. Or if I didn't have a full time job and tiny human. With the gardens I did try, it just became such a chore to come home from a full day of work, take care of the kid until bedtime, workout, clean up, and THEN also need to go outside and pick off bugs and cultivate the soil and weed and water.

It's not something that brings me joy, like I thought it would be. But I do find joy in walking with my dog and kid and backpack to the farmer's market, and that supports local businesses. So win-win.

That’s exactly how I’m feeling...and if I can’t even get a handful of berries, then what the heck is all of this work for. Luckily, my herbs are doing ok, 5 have died, but the rest are growing well. I’ve used the dill and basil several times already, haven’t had a chance to use the others yet. My cucumbers haven’t even broke ground, so I don’t think those plants are coming in. I have strawberries forming, but who know if they’ll get eaten as well. The rest is kale, spinach, various peppers- yellow, red, banana, jalapeño- spaghetti squash, cauliflower. None are ready to be used yet.. but I’m hopeful on those.

We have wild strawberries here and they never get very far along before being eaten by something. Cucumbers were the one thing we got plentiful yield on, along with squash. Our kale was eaten before it even had a chance to grow, LOL. Same with our spinach and lettuce. You should be able to for sure get some peppers! Those don't seem to get eaten.

I’ve noticed at both Home Depot and Lowe’s, that their plants are larger now, and have more of a selection. When I got the cucumbers they were just a container of dirt, now the ones at the store do actually have the plant. Should have waited a few weeks. Oh well, lesson learned! Maybe I’ll buy one more cucumber plant and see if that works.

Honestly you kinda shot yourself in the foot getting your plants from Home Depot. They don't treat the plants very well on their way to the store and in store, and they spray their plants with stuff that's harmful to bees so it's harder to get those plants pollinated. If you do try this again, start either from seeds inside in the spring, or get your plants from a local nursery.

Home Depot does have a guarantee on their plants, or at least they did a few years back. So potentially you can switch your dead cucumbers out for bigger plants.

Kings Island is reopening!!!!! A bit different capacity though, not the waterpark as of yet, and reservations required. I’m just happy either way!! Not sound bratty, but I kinda wish platinum passholders would receive some kind of priority in reservations that first week., doesn’t sound like it.

Park officials said the reopening comes with new health, safety and hygiene protocols in place to allow a safe opening.

The park will be open initially for season passholders on July 2 through July 11 and to everyone on July 12.

“We are ready to welcome our guests back to Kings Island for some long-overdue fun,” said Mike Koontz, general manager of Kings Island. “The safety of our guests and associates has always been and will always be our top priority. The park’s new health and safety protocols align with CDC recommendations and have been shaped by information from company and industry health and safety experts, along with our state and local government officials.”

New protocols to create a safe and clean environment include:

  • A new online reservation system; each guest is required to have a reservation prior to their visit to enable capacity management
  • A requirement to complete a pre-visit health screening declaration 24 hours prior to admission
  • A touchless temperature screening prior to entering the facility for both guests and associates
  • Requirements for all guests, associates and vendors to wear masks as directed by the protocols
  • Social distancing markers throughout the park, including ride queue lines
  • Limited guest/associate contact
  • Enhanced cleaning procedures, including additional deep cleaning and sanitization of restrooms, dining facilities and other busy areas
  • Additional hand sanitization stations
  • Capacity management throughout the park.
The park will initially open to season passholders with limited capacity and hours. Kings Island will be sending emails to passholders, inviting them to begin making reservations.

Only passholders will be able to make reservations for at least the first week; daily ticket reservations will open within the next two weeks.

An opening date for Soak City water park is to be determined.

All guests are asked to download Kings Island’s free mobile app to make a reservation and facilitate their park visit. 2020 Season Passes have been extended to through 2021.

It's only taken three years of having Amazon Prime, ten years of having streaming services of some sort, and about five years of having smart TVs, but my mom is finally streaming something on her TV without assistance.

That something is Magnum PI, but one step at a time.
My mom is the same way with her phone. Asking dad or I how to questions all the time. Then she turns around and says I better not be doing anything suspicious on my phone. If I would she would not be able to figure out if I was or not. :D

My parents are interesting people. I still live with them, in spite of being 25 (long story). Anyway, we had dial up until 2009. Now, we have all kinds of technology. High speed internet, five Amazon Echos, they both have iPads, smart lights, smart TVs, a smart garage door opener...and getting them to use anything besides the iPads and the Echos is a pain. My dad would still flip off the lights even though they were on the Echos...I'm like, you're the one who bought these! They are generally clueless about using the smart TV. I have finally gotten my mom introduced to it somewhat, but it I left it on an app instead of on the TV, they'd get so mad because they didn't know how to change it back...even when I explained that you just pressed the giant button on the remote that says TV. They have Bluetooth in their cars...I had to pair their phones.

So the fact that I can get my m to use a streaming service at all is amazing. 😂
