wow, hella strong quake between Jamaica and Cuba. Tsunami warning ensued.
I got a few coworkers who are right now near the area and they said it lasted more than a minute, very strong shaking.

*edit*
One said that it was felt all the way to Cancun in Mexico.. wow..

Thankfully, zero to minimal damage in Jamaica, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, and anywhere else it was felt.
And, fortunately there were no appreciable tsunami waves anywhere. I read an online article that a 0.40 ft. tsunami wave was recorded on Grand Cayman...that’s approx. 4.75 inches, so how is it distinguishable from any other typical wave...? The pattern/wavelength, I guess...?
The highest point on Grand Cayman is a mere 59 feet above sea level, whereas the island of Jamaica is mostly mountains, and the highest peak is 7,402 feet above sea level. Having been to both twice, I prefer Grand Cayman to Jamaica, so far, but probably not tsunami-wise.
Ultimately, I’m just glad there were no deaths or major injuries, and minimal damage from a 7.7 magnitude quake.

height is not everything in tsunami waves but their width. normal waves have like.. a size of 2 meters of a "water wall" behind them. Tsunami waves tend to have up to 500mts of this wall of water. The Japan quake showed this effect.

pretty terrifying when the wave never ends and keeps pushing you.. *edit* plus the fact that most sea waves only affect like.. 2 meters deep, while tsunami waves go all the way to the bottom of the sea.

Nope. Not in my opinion. The YOUTH basketball game to which he was to coach his daughter trump'd safety. Willing to hoover 12 minute to get a special clearance. Yep he got it and chose to take it. Had 12 minutes to gamble if his life and all those aboard were worth the gamble when he could see out the window what law enforcement could also see when they grounded their helicopters. He chose basketball. Tunnel vision.

This is man that was by all rights likely the most amazing athlete in basketball history. and I come from Michael Jordan land, Kobe was that much better professionally. His drive in life.

He created this club to advance children. He coached this club. He coached his daughter. The game became more important than weather which I cannot grasp but many understand and make excuses for. I get fandom. While common people might yield to weather others might agree and make the 'other choice.' That breaks my heart. He had 12 minutes to consider the safety of his daughter and the other passengers as they requested a special clearance. Looking from the window he had to see that he couldn't see so how could the pilot? He had to see zero viability. They all lost as did their surviving families. It doesn't take away from his professional career but it does add into his life choices that were highly questionable throughout his adult life with his Mom and Dad, his siblings and least not his very public infidelity with his wife. His professional judgement on the court was awesome, the balance is subjective on so many different levels. He will go down in history as the most most awesome professional basketball player which I agree. Me I question his legacy as a protective parent or faithful husband. Both very different definitions.

A stomach bug hit my kids like someone knocked over a domino. Youngest had thrown up between Sunday and Monday. She was ok yesterday. I fell asleep early last night, then was told by dh that dd-12 threw up and while she was heaving in the toilet ds threw up in the sink. Then not long afterwards oldest threw up. I apparently missed all the drama. I am hoping it is just a 24 hour bug. I just got over strep so I for sure don’t need a stomach bug.
