You're missing the point. In the many discussions about these attractions, there's been plenty of argument over which franchise is the bigger one, so I started this poll to tally the opinions. Simple as that.

I understand that, but again, why would it matter?

In the fight between Darth Vader and Harry Potter, Batman wins. PERIOD!

Batman would definitely make Darth Vader cry.

I understand that, but again, why would it matter?

People seemed interested in debating it, so I created a thread for it. Creates some data for people to refer to when it comes up now and then, and maybe helps curb some thread drift.

Why does any of the stuff we discuss on these boards matter?

We are at page three so obviously we enjoy discussing this stuff.

Gives us a SW theme park! The fans have been clamouring for it for thirty years. I too can't believe Lucas / Disney didn't exploit SW more.

It's the Disney parks, not the Disney movies, that are imprinted on my mind. For SW, it is the reverse. If they would come together, I'd explode. I'd pay anything to visit a Disney SW park.

I knew it was Star Wars, but this clinched it for me. Compare the characters...

Voldemort or Darth Vader
Hermione or Han Solo
Dumbledore or Yoda
Death Eaters or Storm Troopers
Order of the Phoenix or Jedi's
Death Star or Hogwarts

Harry Potter is very popular, but really - Star Wars has a much bigger impact.

BTW - as if that were not enough - I asked my 7 year old which one he likes better. He didn't even stop to think - Star Wars!

That's just wrong and an awful mental picture

Thank you, Mr. EPCOT, for asking which is "bigger", not which is "better". One has to admit that Star Wars is bigger, from a number of points of view.

However, the large gap between the first trilogy and the second trilogy allowed it to capture two, maybe three generations of devotees.

My dad took me and my brother to see SW, I enjoyed the heck out of it, but that was that for us. I didn't see Empire until its re-release, when I was dating my now-DH, who couldn't believe that I'd never seen it. We stood in line for hours to see Jedi the year we got married :)eek:), and I could tell you a long story about the projector repeatedly breaking down and the near riot it caused, but this is not the time or place... Second trilogy, I thought they were less than stellar. DH claims to love them just as much as the first, but then he has bought the expanded universe comics and books, too, over the years, and I never bothered with any of them.

I read and loved the HP books. The movies, less so. I've just finished re-reading the entirety of the seven books. Extremely compelling writing. As soon as I finished Deathly Hallows, I wanted to go back to the beginning and read it again. I have urged DH to read the books, but he resists. I don't understand, since he has watched, and reportedly enjoyed, the movies. His loss.

All of that wordiness leads to this: SW has had the benefit of spanning generations, and having children introduced and encouraged to enjoy it by their parents, who had enjoyed SW themselves in their childhood. HP is huge with the generation that read them as children, as well as those adults who were open-minded enough to check them out. But Since there will likely be no more books the only way to bring the story to another generation, will be for those who enjoyed it in its prime to pass it along.

Personally, I prefer the HP series to SW, but the answer to the question is that SW is bigger.

Is harry potter considered a trilogy? Star wars is based on a bunch of vershions of the stories that have been told for years and what I have learned in mass comp and what my teacher told us that is what makes it a trilogy. Harry potter is based on a legend with made up characters first told about ion the book. But then Luke Skywalher and Han Solo were first introduced in the movie as I have heard. my mass comp teacher told us Harry Potter isn't a trilogy. Are they going to make star wars 7,8 and 9 I know Harrison Ford was paid in advance to play Luke Skywalker like 30 years in the future or something like that. That was heard back in the 80's I think so things could change. To me 2 and 3 blew episode one wasn't that bad.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Agree with the first part.

Agree to disagree on the second? Little harsh, no?
Well, I suppose since I can't FORCE you to change your opinion, I'll have to let that one slide. :)
All I know is that the one time I actually listened to the lyrics to "Just Dance" I died a little on the inside.

A side note: TWO times in my life I've been with my girlfriend somewhere, and heard something awful on the radio. Both times when I ask her who it is it turns out to be Miley Cyrus.
Music nowadays sucks.

I think it's fair to say Harry Potter is this to generation like Star Wars was to your generation?

Not exactly. Kids today still across the board would recognize Vader or a stormtrooper much more than HP characters. I like HP, but it is no where near as big as Star Wars.

Take a look at this chart. http://www.google.com/trends?q=Harry+Potter,+Star+Wars
It compares how many times HP has been Googled vs. SW. Obviously this is just a recent thing, but no one can dispute that RIGHT NOW HP is bigger. Despite my preference for HP, I don't think that will last forever, though.

Just so you realize, that's not a very good measure, since they amount of people that use internet, and specifically search terms of personal interest on a regular basis is still rather small sadly.

HP is awesome
Star Wars is awesome

Star Wars will always be bigger though.

Having said that, I WILL be taking a day to Universal once the addition is complete on my next Disney trip to check it out.

They can both be that, IMO.
Star Wars could be a resort. Look at all the unique characters. Harry Potter would be stretching it though. I think a land at Uni is perfect for it. Potter just doesn't have as many characters and takes place primarly in Hogwarts. Star Wars plays out in a bunch of places.

Very true. But if Google was around when SW first debuted, I think it would have been googled more than HP.

I checked for number of results that a Google search yields.

Star wars 94.500.000
Harry Potter 115.000.000

Bit of a surprise there, I must admit.

Just for fun, some other numbers of Google hits:
Star Trek 46.000.000
Indiana Jones 39.800.000
Muppets 3.390.000
Lady Gaga 45.500.000

Star Wars of course, but only because it's been around A LOT longer than HP. The fan groups for both franchises are equally loyal, so the competition should be interesting!

I have no idea what you just said. So I'll try and decipher it.

HP is in no way a trilogy. George Lucas took alot from different stories from different cultures, that's true. I have never heard that HP was based on a legend with original characters. Lucas envisioned his saga in 9 parts in the beginning. However as the story is all about the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker, it was done after ROTJ. Where did you hear Harrison Ford was paid in advance to play Luke 30 yrs in the future? I've been a SW fan since I was 5 and I've never heard that.

As to the poll. Star Wars has spanned many years and many forms of media. I've read all the Harry Potter books and seen all the movies. I honestly feel Star Wars is bigger because there are at least 40 Star Wars books between the novelizations and the Expanded Universe. JK Rowling has said no on will write Harry but her. Lucas has let numerous people expand on his characters and help turn his saga into modern legend.

Star Wars FTW!!!

Ditto...

My kids (5 & 7) have lived with both. They've heard all the Harry Potter books (Jim Dale versions on CD) and seen the movies.

They've also seen all the SW movies, watched the Clone Wars cartoons, built SW legos, etc...

When a new Harry Potter movie comes out, the play Harry Potter for a couple of days. Then they go back to running around with Lightsabers & playing Star Wars, playing with SW toys, etc...

It's really not even close with my kids.
