TBQH, Star Wars offers a lot of fun and simple toys. The light saber, to a kid, is to die for. However with HP, they don't have an endless amount of toys and fighting with sticks with fake spells you utter gets boring after a while. I think when kids are older in their teens they'd respect Harry Potter more. The plot there is much more in depth once you get into the later movies. A 7 year old wouldn't grasp all of the literary elements the series has (at least when I was 7 all I was concerned about was having as much fun as possible, Harry Potter would of went right over my head [I still don't understand everything from HP]).

Star Wars by a long shot. The SW movies are classic, cinematic masterpieces that are ingrained in our culture.

True HP may be more popular now but they have all just been released in theatres. But honestly SW is probably closer in popularity than it should be considering the first movie was released 32 years ago! SW has fans of all ages from 5 to 65, Honestly do you ever meet anyone who has never seen SW or that doesnt like them? These people are few and far between.
True HP has fans of all ages as well but I dont think it is on the same level as SW.
Like others have said, mention Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, The Force, Han Solo, Yoda or any number of other things from the movies and virtually everyone knows what you are talking about. I think this is far less true with HP
The true test will be to see if HP is still as popular in the year 2033 (32 years after it was first released.) But I have a feeling that it will not be near as popular as it is now and that SW will still be as popular as it has ever been.
