Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

LOL :hilarious: I'll try not to spam this with too many cake pictures and I'll try and keep it Disney-ish, but when I'm given time to plan...I can devote more time to sculpting details and buy supplies that help with the presentation or ease of production. Still, it's just a hobby (my job has nothing to do with cake :grumpy:) and life comes up to always make me strapped for time, so I'm always a bit disappointed and it's never quite as clean as I'd like. Perfectionist issues!

This was Sam's Star Wars bday cake from 2016. I had weeks to work on this. So, "Wookiee the Chew" (a blend of Pooh and Chewbacca- concept borrowed from an artist) had lots of prep time. It wasn't until an issue at the tail end (Sam broke her wrist 2 days out) that I had to scramble on the end work of the Death Star (and some other details) and some things wound up being more sloppy than I'd like.

This was Kendall's 3rd bday cake. I had months to test products and try test shoes before doing this one...still, I had the bright idea of giving her a big wooden swingset playset for this bday and have us assemble it in secret the night before. So, I was trying to finish up the cake and a playset all in the same day. The back of the cake is a disaster. So, I photographed it from its best angles. LOL

In the case of Kendall's Toy Story Barbie car cake, the whole darn cake fell apart in transit. It was an insane week...car accident less than a week out from her 5th bday surprise road trip to WDW and I was just a mess. BUT- before things got crazy...I made what I still think are a decent alien and a decent Mr. Potato Head for said cake.

But then sometimes, life doesn't throw me hurdles at cake time and things go off really well.

I said I wasn't going to spam this with cake pics, and what did I do?

Thank you! Of course, their pastry chefs know all kinds of techniques and such that sort of baffle me...but, at least I don't have their rules when making cakes. :)
These cakes are incredible! Great job. I'm lucky to just get a 2-layer cake iced!

My boyfriend is petrified of IASW too! Dolls freak him out. So of course when I traveled with my mom, aunt and uncle, we made sure to send him plenty of photos and filled his Facebook feed with videos of the ride. Lolol

:hilarious: I'm sure he loved that! I'm a big Mary Blair fan and am always amazed by the detail of Alice Davis' work with the costumes, so the IASW hater in my fam are forced to "suffer" with it unless we're in divide and conquer mode.

Your cakes are AMAZING!! You are so talented!!

Thank you!

These cakes are incredible! Great job. I'm lucky to just get a 2-layer cake iced!

Thank you! It's sort of a blessing and a curse. There are many times when I wish I could just give them a regular cake, but when they know what I've done, they ask for all kinds of crazy things and I feel bad saying no.

Just got caught up! Sorry you have 8 pages worth of "likes" from me :hilarious: Great trip so far! I am looking forward to the rest, and your cakes are so beautiful! I'm glad you shared.

LOL It's all good! I saw yesterday that you have a trip report that started. We've been caught up in softball tournament play as well as regular weekend games, but I'm hoping to start reading it today. Thanks! It's fun sharing the cakes, but it also makes me want to make one. Hubby's bday is coming up, but not sure if there's time this year for anything elaborate.

So, I never got to post again yesterday. When I looked at our softball calendar, it looked like we just had one game today for Sam as well as early morning team pics for both girls....but no. No, turns out K had a tournament. We had round robin play last night and double elimination play today. It also doesn't help that it was 73 degrees when all of this started and it was 50 degrees, rain and a strong winds (wind chill in the low 40s/upper 30s) by the time it all ended. We knew it was going to happen, but it's still miserable to be stuck outside when it's like this. Oh...and I also got to coach my mom through making a bday cake for my niece. She prefers buttercream, while I prefer working in fondant, but she was able to put my carving and crusting buttercream knowledge to use for a super cute cake.

OK...so not Disney, but I thought I'd share since we'd been on the topic of cake.

So, we had just gotten off of IASW when I last posted.

We had a FP for Space Mountain and my brother's fam had an FP for Dumbo, so we decided to head to our respective FPs and meet up later at Haunted Mansion.

I still would like to have these in my yard. Of course, David said I'd be the one handling the upkeep. Soooooo, I guess it's not happening.

We were a little early, so trying to kill some time. K is enjoying her new toy...which broke later that day.

Standby time was around 180 min, so I was happy to wait a few to go in. And soon it was time! We moved so quickly that I didn't start taking pics until I was up at the front.

And just like that...we're done and on our way out. Well, and I also got tangled in my camera strap and lost one of my shoes in the car on the way out, so I was that person holding up the process. I'm not embarrassing or anything!

Once I got myself together and stopped making a total fool of myself...we headed out. Kendall was also complaining about her back hurting. I wasn't sure if it was from the ride, from the fall the other day, a combo of both...or just Kendall being dramatic Kendall.

We can't get those candy corn pumpkins in England...but I am TOTALLY going to get one of my American girlfriends to send me a bag so that I can do the jack-o'-lantern faces on them for my (annual) Halloween "graveyard cake." What a FAB idea - thank you for posting it.

You're welcome! While it would be cheaper to have someone buy them here and bring them back, I think you can buy them on Amazon. They're a Brachs product, so it might even be on their site or another candy site. I originally planned on making the pumpkins out of fondant, but I was running short on time and it seemed like the best improv option to get the job done. They were a bit of a pain though. The food coloring never really cured on the candies like it would on fondant. So, I had to insert toothpicks into them first, carefully paint the faces with my right hand while holding the pick in my left, and then immediately insert them into the cake...while making sure not to touch the faces.

So, we had just boarded and have a nice boat ride. We are pretty crowd tolerant, but with the breakdowns and foot pain, it was all a bit much for me today. Most times, I just find my rhythm in the big crowd and go with it. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, the 4th...you name it...we've done it and we're usually good. But today, I had times when it all felt a bit suffocating...which is sad, because it's not the worst we've ever seen. So, the ride was a relaxing change. There was nothing good coming up for FPs anyway and standby times were insane, so this seemed like a good solution. There's no great drama or anything here...so, I'll just spam you with pictures.

And we're still riding...and I'm sort of flashing back to our 2015 Christmas trip to Disneyland. We took a similar approach when we ran out of things to do that didn't involve fighting crowds. While it's not our first choice of things to do, stuff like this does have such a strong Disney vibe to it that it's kind of nice to sort of end up in these spots.

My brother was able to get us DAS passes for HM, but obviously, with the wait time and popularity, it would be a later return time. We had a 6:45pm ADR at LTT and they had to grab dinner too (can't remember their plans), so we decided to head out and meet up after dinner. We were right near LTT and it was only just after 6, but David suggested we check in early and see if they could seat us early. Things were crazy, but it was worth a try. So, I checked in, but was told it was highly doubtful and that if anything, we were more likely to be seated 15-20 minutes late from our actual ADR time. So, we sat...and sat..and sat some more...

I have not been to LTT in a LOOOONG time. It was just kind of meh on my last visit and David and the kids have never been. Still, it's a holiday trip and we LOVE Thanksgiving dinner, so I was willing to give it another chance. Just to give you an idea of how much we love traditional Thanksgiving food, we have a chest freezer partly so I can stock up on cheap turkeys when they are on sale around Thanksgiving. While I limited myself to four this year, as you can see from the pic below, there have been years where my freezer looks more like the grocery store case.

40387728065_9db0da631d_c.jpg

People jokingly call us turkey hoarders, but it's hard to pass it up when they're this cheap. Plus, this way we can have turkey for all of the holidays or whenever we want it.

As a result of this, we are very critical of turkey and everything that traditionally goes with it. We are well aware that different people do some things differently...and we've had everything from Cuban flair to traditional country (I grew up in the northeast, so this is not my tradition)...and the turkey has been everything from roasted, smoked, or fried...as well as one year with a turduckhen from a local Cajun butcher. OK...so you get it...we like Thanksgiving food.

We get the salad and rolls and they were nothing exciting. Not bad, but not wow.

And then the rest of the food came out...pretty much right as we were loading salad onto our plates. I could forgive it if the food were better...so here goes (pictures first)...

Mashed potatoes- In the pic, they looked mashed, but it's a deceiving pic. I don't mind lumps in my mashed potatoes, but lumps shouldn't be big chunks. Sam had some on her plate with an unmashed piece that was bigger than a golf ball. I had several unmashed pieces that were the size of lemon wedges. They also were void of any seasoning.

Green Beans- in the pic, you can see a large stem. There were a number of these in the bowl. There were also quite a few with brown spots that tasted like they were starting to turn.

Gravy- It had so much starch and flour in it that it was missing any real turkey flavor and was more like the nasty jarred stuff.

Macaroni and Cheese- It looks creamy and cheesy, but it's not. It had absolutely no cheese flavor to it, it was watery, the pasta was overcooked, and it had no salt. I can usually get Sam to eat mac & cheese...even less than stellar stuff...but she pushed it away and said it was nasty.

Cranberry Sauce- I never got a pic of it, but this was decent. It's super easy to make and it's nice that they seem to make it and not settle with canned stuff.

Stuffing - Never got a pic, but it was more like mashed up cardboard. It was flavorless and oddly pasty.

Pork- GROSS. That's it...ok, well, dry would also fit, but the seasoning is just strange. I know we're not the only ones who who dislike it as I've seen it ripped in a number of reviews.

Pot Roast- This was decent. It's no different than what I can make in my slow cooker, but at least this was good and what I expect pot roast to taste like. This is probably why I hate 50s pot roast. We actually ordered seconds of this.

Turkey- It reminded me a lot of the turkey you find in a frozen entree. It was dry and had this taste I normally associate with meats filled with tons of preservatives.

Obviously, we were not happy, but I was hoping dessert would make things better. After all, I hear so many raves about the ooey gooey toffee cake. Kendall couldn't eat it and would have to settle for plain ice cream, but for the rest of us...we were hoping it would be good. Instead, we got ooey gooey toffee soup.

39275010901_5367edc157_c.jpg

I've seen photos of this enough times and I've never seen it come out this melted. I certainly don't need my ice cream rock hard, but this had melted enough and sat long enough that the ice cream around the edges had started to make that consistency change (sort of congealed).

Needless to say, we will not be going back to LTT. I know some people love it, but if this were my Thanksgiving trip and I booked this for my Thanksgiving dinner, I'd be ticked off and want a do over someplace else. Again...if you love LTT, just look at it from the "they won't be competition for ADRs" angle.

Seeing as how we missed HEA from the GF dock on night 1, I had been really hoping to see it in the park today. It would be our only chance to see it in the park this trip (and we've never seen it in person). I started having a change of heart as the day wore on. It was extremely crowded, which usually makes for a miserable situation with fireworks. David and Sam had already decided that they wanted no part of it, but before dinner, Kendall and I were still thinking about braving it, but that would also mean skipping out on HM with my brother's family if we wanted a chance at a better spot and fighting the crowds if we did HM and trying to find a last minute spot.

When we left LTT, an announcement came over the PA system that the hub was already at 85-90% capacity. That didn't sound like fun, and this was about seeing family, so we chose HM with my brother's family...with the possibility of braving it for HEA afterwards.

That's it for now. Coming up...HM gets scary and it's not the ghosts and the conclusion of our evening in MK.

So, we went right in with the DAS pass and we were asked to stay to the back of the stretching room so they could filter us through with the stroller.

Here's where things get a little questionable. They asked my SIL and brother if they needed to stop the belt. They said no, but they really should have said yes. Like I noted earlier in the TR, he has some muscular issues which impact his stability. My nephew had no issues boarding, but exiting would be a problem.

So, we rode...and I tried to take some pics. Kendall was with my nephew and SIL and Sam was with by brother and niece, so it was just me and David in a car. This night's pics weren't the best, but I might as well share some...

24412769867_f80aaf1141_c.jpg

So, not wonderful, but better than previous attempts. Much to learn...much to learn!

We get to the end and here's where the problems come up and as you'd guess...it's going to be an issue with my nephew. When he exited his doombuggy, he couldn't get his footing. His legs buckled and he fell head first towards the doombuggies. David and I were behind them and David immediately lunged forward to try and get my nephew up. It was one of those awful slow motion things that plays over and over again in your head. I can't remember what I shrieked at the nearby CM or if it was just a shriek, but the CM just stared blankly. Meanwhile, my nephew is lying on his side, kicking around like a bug that's been flipped, unable to get up and David can't seem to get a good grip on him. Another CM that was out of my earshot apparently snapped at David telling him he needed to move...like the CM was totally oblivious to the fallen child who was struggling. How the heck do you miss that? I get that there are people exiting behind us too and the belt is moving, but it's like the CMs were completely blind and to add attitude to it got David really angry. Thankfully, David was able to finally get a good grip on his arm to pull him up before things got really ugly.

Between this and Kendall's fall at AK, I have some real safety concerns. Yes, my brother and SIL should have asked for the belt to be stopped and shouldn't have gone under the assumption that all would be OK because all was OK before. Still, I got more care and compassion from CMs a few years ago when my wallet opened up on the belt after falling out of my bag. Not that it would have been good for me to lose my credit cards and driver's licence, but those are petty things when you compare it to the safety of a human being. We're thankful that he's OK and I had my mom get on them to insist on a belt stoppage for future visits. Still, it's been 3.5 months and it still makes me really mad.

On a side note...my SIL noted that she was shocked how frightened K is of HM. She's always been so scared of the attraction, but I was hoping she'd be OK with it by this age...especially with my nephew in the ride vehicle.

So, we left HM and decided to part ways for the evening.

24412767967_35cc5c59df_c.jpg

Kendall and I were discussing HEA when the announcement was made that the hub was at 100% capacity and people would have to find other spots in the park to watch. Well, that sounded awful, so we decided to just take advantage of lower crowds during the fireworks. We stopped at the bathroom along the way and look who we bumped into...

24412764487_b4ac9ef851_c.jpg

At some point, PotC came back up, so we decided to head that way. It was pretty much walk on...

We decided to hit up the Jingle Cruise next since the crowds would still be up near the castle and there would be that mad rush of people leaving the park. I have a scar on my shin from our 2016 trip when I tried to go against this post fireworks flow...and I didn't want another.

We had a decent skipper, but I'm the only one in our group who really gets into the jokes. Oh, and I guess I was destined to have some post fireworks issues. I tripped on my way out of the boat. It wasn't so bad that I needed medical help, but enough for the skippers to break character. No scars, but I bruised up my shin a bit.

We decided to go through the hub so I could get some Dreamlights pics...

Even caught a little glimpse of some other fireworks going off at the castle while we looked around. We never took the time to see this, but was it called Once Upon a Time? Some other lady was saying there was a second fireworks show that night, but I knew whatever it was wasn't HEA x2, so I figured it was something on par with some of the projection shows that end with a bang. Maybe I was wrong, but we didn't see much beyond this for pyro.

So, we decided to ride Buzz so that David can kick my butt at another ride. Actually, all of the other lines were already crazy. I don't remember it being more than 15 minutes.

I didn't even bother with a pic of the carnage...it was that bad.

When we got out, we were hoping at least the Peoplemover line had gotten better (one of those Tomorrowland pics before Buzz was the mess of a line), but it was still snaking way back towards Space Mountain. We weren't in EMH yet, but my feet were done...so, we decided to slowly head out of MK.

We're still making our way out of MK. I remember taking this one...it's actually my 4th picture. I was hoping the balloons would turn at the same time so that the mouse ears were facing in the same direction and towards me like this. Thankfully, David was off getting a drink, so I had that little bit of extra time to wait on this.

December 21st - Epcot Day

I was hoping getting a full night of sleep would help with my feet and legs, but I had a hard time just getting to the bathroom to brush my teeth. My heels were still looking bad though, so I decided to still go with the cushy flip flops. I was last out of the room and met David and the kids up by the elevators...and I'm still losing the battle with that darn Mickey hoodie!

It's not a bad ride. In fact, I expected to hate it, but I didn't. That being said...I do have a couple of thoughts... 1. I wouldn't wait more than 30 minutes for it (if that) 2. It just doesn't fit in the WS for me. I could see this fitting into Fantasyland in the new section.

That's it for today. Coming up...the painful trek back, saying good-bye to more family, and a new to us breakfast experience. Thanks for following along. :)

David had wanted to try and work in Test Track during EMH, but with my slow pace and us hitting it second, the wait was already up to 45 minutes. We wanted to see my brother and his fam before they left (this was their last day) and they had a brunchish ADR at Chef Mickey's, so we just decided to head back to the Swan. We had an 11:30 ADR at Trattoria al Forno, so it seemed like the best plan. So, we headed out of Epcot and to the boats...

I was the last to get the, but I limped up to the boat area...

39275766011_4daf6d04b3_c.jpg

One of the CMs manning the boats who was standing there and watched me hobble up asked me where we were headed. I said the Swan and he told me I could get there about 3 minutes faster on foot. Had I not just gripped on to the metal rails to steady myself and made an ugly shuffle just to get there right in front of him while grimacing and wincing with each step, I would have just taken it as helpful advice. David and I also sensed a certain 'tone" to it that also didn't sit well. I was in so much pain that I just tried to brush it off and got onto the boat.

We realized we were waiting in the wrong lounge for my brother, but not before meeting this adorable family. The grandmother fell in love with Kendall and gave her all kinds of words of wisdom about cherishing these times and never cutting off communication with us no matter how much we butted heads. We didn't encounter too many families and people this trip who were chatty like this, so it was nice to get a little bit of that. And then we found our family...

I hadn't even noticed the Swan had its own little gingerbread! And it wouldn't be until check out morning that I'd realized I photographed the back. Ooooops!

Time to say good-bye...

After we said our good-byes, I headed up to the room to do something about my feet. I bandaged up my heels, found a proper pair of athletic socks that would cover the area and not pull at the bandage work, and I put on my joggers. My feet were a bit swollen, so they didn't go on as well as normal, but after taking a few steps, it was a million times better than the cushy flip flops. It also doesn't help that Asics discontinued my favorite joggers. I really hate when they do this. What's sad...even though my faves are pretty close to needing retirement, they have more cushion than their replacements (which are supposedly better distance joggers. SMH). Dear Asics, PLEASE bring back the Sendai and the Kinsei. The Nimbus and Quantum are not nearly as cushy! This is an issue that goes beyond Disney, but it certainly had an impact on the trip.

So, we headed out onto the boardwalk...
