Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

(Stille Nacht)

David really didn't enjoy it, but he's also not a huge fan of German food. I liked some of it, but some things were definitely better than others. The sauerbraten was really dry, same for the spaetzle, and the biggest sin...quite a few of the potatoes in the German potato salad weren't cooked. It's sad because the flavors were pretty spot on and it reminded me a lot of my grandmother's German potato salad. I did like a lot of the sausages as well, but the quality seemed to be below the ones we get at some of our local German and Austrian places. The desserts weren't bad either IMO, but David was not happy with his Black Forest Cake...especially the cherry.

While I'm not fluent, I took 4.5 years of German when growing up and it's my favorite language for singing. So, I told him in German, it was called Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte and the "kirsch" is what lets you know it involves something with cherry. Yeah...I just came off as a condescending jerk. Yay me! LOL

He just had to sit with K!

My brother and his family would not be joining us for Candlelight Processional and were allowed to just pay regular dinner prices for the meal. So, that was also nice. There's no way his kids could sit through that, nor would they do it without disrupting others and the show. So, I'm really glad it worked out this way.

We also popped into the bathroom before heading out. It was around this point I started to feel some blisters on my heels, but I decided to wait until we were in the line for CP to check it out...so we all (well, the 6 of us) made our way over there.

38565946934_3c42a19973_c.jpg

RUSHING!!!

I was prepared for a line, but I really wasn't sure what to expect. We haven't been in December since 2010 and we opted to skip CP since the kids were too young back then. Still, I warned everyone in our group that there would be a standby line and a line for those with passes from the dining package and it could be long. So, we got there and there was a massive line for people with passes that had formed in front of Japan. It appeared so long that my dad started audibly worrying if we'd even get in. I assured him we'd be fine, but that didn't help much. When we found the start to the line, we also found out we were doing it all wrong. We had no idea our passes were stickers and that we had to be wearing them to enter the line. So, we wasted some more time peeling off the stickers and putting them on.

Once we got into the line, we knew we'd have some time before we went in, so we all decided to sit down. It was at this point that I discovered my heels looked pretty bad...and it was all because I was in a rush that morning and put on the wrong socks. Thankfully, I had my cushy flip flops with me, so I switched into those. They would become a blessing and a curse, but for now....things were good. The woman in front of us also wanted to get chatty and asked how long we'd had a package meal book...she'd heard tonight was in high demand...and she just happened to get it that day by walking up. Ummm...OK. She felt pretty good about this after hearing my story.

Not that I had to do anything overly crazy to get this meal, but I had been waiting on CP packages since 180. They wouldn't open up until we were staying in a hotel in between our house closings. I couldn't tip the kids off, so I was trying to do all of this in cramped quarters. I got an alert around 7am that it had opened up...everyone was still asleep in our little hotel suite...and we had an extra air mattress in there that required me to hurdle all kinds of obstacles in stealth. Still, I was pretty excited to have it booked and even more excited because of the narrator for our date...Neil Patrick Harris!!! I knew Kendall would be so excited because for some reason, she really likes him...probably starting from his parts in the World of Color show we saw at DCA in 2015.

38565943654_9ec96a312b_c.jpg

We also turned around and realized we were in a pretty good spot in line. I'd been told that the line can reach well into Morocco and while I didn't take a pic of it, it certainly looks like that's where the line ended.

I was also wondering how far back we'd be in the theater. We saw a lot of people who went in not too far ahead of us winding up pretty far back, but just as we were coming in, they started filling the next section and we were in the second row, just behind the section for friends and family.

38565942494_ee2f4296fc_c.jpg

It was time to switch out lenses and test how close I could get with my zoom. Yup...pretty close. Now hopefully I could stop shaking so much by showtime so I could get better shots!

I took a few pics as we waited, but they were all ridiculously blurry. We had to wait for them to finish filling in the seats, but soon after, the musicians & maestro started entering and the orchestral portion began...

He warmed up the crowd with some humorous yet personal stories...talking about his kids growing up in the parks. It was similar to the milestones we all celebrate when our kids are younger. Ya know...being tall enough to finally ride things like RNRC and TOT. And then joking about how one made him weep, while the other made said child weep. Good stuff!

There's more...but they are all the same things from slightly different angles or with slightly different expressions. I think some was I was just so excited that between the new camera and my old zoom, I was getting a lot of the pics I'd always hoped to get.

All in all, this was an amazing experience and I have no regrets about paying for the package. In fact, this was one of the best things I've ever experienced in a Disney park. We'd heard that only 2 standby people got into the first show and it wasn't much better for the second (the one we attended), so I was glad not to waste my day standing in line for such limited standby seating. I know the kids liked it, my mom is still raving about it, and I think David enjoyed it too. He used to fall asleep during my performances back in my symphony days, so his being awake speaks volumes. Side note...having never seen it before (outside of videos) I don't know if it's customary for the celebrity narrator to sing along, but NPH did join in the for the Hallelujah Chorus and he clearly knew his part. Major props for that.

*************************************************************

I'm going to stop there for now since we have to get ready for softball, but coming up, I will finish up the 19th.

I wish my pictures had turned out as well as yours. I loved them! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Taking the plunge on a new camera really paid off.

I've never been at WDW for Candlelight Processional, but NPH would be my first choice for narrator if the opportunity arose!

I never thought we'd be lucky enough to see him for our dates. In looking at previous years, he usually was one of the earlier narrators. We're wondering if it has to do with his kids now being a bit older and timing with school schedules.

Wow so jealous. I love Neil Patrick Harris. And then to be at the Processional on top of that. I would have never been able to take a picture because of my tears. Amazing photos.

Thank you! It was definitely an incredible experience and he really does an amazing job with it. :)

We made our way out of the theater and my parents decided to call it a night. I wasn't ready to go back just yet, but David also didn't want to stick around for Illuminations. He made the point that we saw it in 2016 and noted that I forgot my Mickey glasses. We did a special Illuminations dessert party as part of our activities/donations for our 2016 trip and got them. I'm not a huge Illuminations fan, but these glasses made it really awesome.

Yeah...watching fireworks hasn't been the same since getting them and I was so mad at myself for forgetting them. Seriously...this was probably worse than forgetting the ponchos and the old DSLR for Kendall.

So, since I was without glasses and David didn't want to see it, we decided to continue on in the WS and went over to the UK.

I can't remember why I took this picture, but it shows me we were staying on the 5th floor. I really couldn't remember. What's funny...someone in one of my Disney FB groups recently posted that the views at the S & D are only good on the upper floors...and clearly, they are wrong.

We also got back in time to see Star Wars fireworks from our room. The pictures aren't great because I'm basically pressed up against the window at an angle, with a big camera, trying to keep still. In hindsight, I should have just taken out my phone. It's only a 6s and doesn't have the great camera that's on the newer ones, but it's flat and probably much better for pressing up against a window. Either way, here are some of the 'better' ones. December 20th- Magic Kingdom day

Back when I started planning this trip, I thought it was nuts to wait until day 5 of our WDW time to set foot in MK, but it's just how it worked best. There was EMH that night and crowds were predicted to be insane, but this was also going to be one of two MK days for us, so I didn't want to go nuts trying to do everything. My parents would also be driving home this day and it would be my brother's family's last full day, so I was going to try and have a more relaxed mindset and approach to things. I also didn't want to drive, so we decided to try out the bus service from the Swan. We got outside and there was an MK bus leaving just as we got out there, but another one pulled up right behind it, so we were good.

It felt strange to be going to MK and not rushing for a pre-park opening meal, but it was also kind of nice. So, we just casually made our way in.

I also see what people now mean about there no longer being any benefit for pre-park opening pictures. Our only early MK day for our 2016 trip involved an 8am at Crystal Palace, so this was our first time really experiencing any of the changes.

We were hoping to start with something more nostalgic since we had FPs for more thrill type stuff that day, so we positioned ourselves to head to Haunted Mansion and then just waited and waited.

There really wasn't much else to do but take pictures.

The crowds also really built in behind us during this time. We went from this...

...to this...and all in a very short amount of time.

No, it's not quite Christmas week crowded, but it wasn't exactly dead either. I know it's much better when everyone disperses into the various lands, but it still was a larger early morning crowd.

I was also paying the price for wearing the wrong socks the previous day. I was wearing my cushy flip flops again to give my heels a rest, but the rest of my feet and legs were not happy. I wore flip flops like this in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and was great...but not today...not 2017. It was so bad that I was limping by the end of MSUSA. The pain wasn't as bad when we were just standing and waiting, but I wasn't sure how I was going to make it if it was already this bad before 9am. I had worn Clarks flip flops on the previous trip and they were just awful, so I thought I was wise in going back to what previously worked. I guess not.

Still taking some pics as we wait...

38566824994_d7985f8b2b_c.jpg

As we waited, we also heard some buzz about Haunted Mansion already being temporarily closed due to tech issues, but the CM at the rope couldn't confirm. So, we kept waiting and caught a little bit of the new opening show from our spot. Yeah...I miss the old show.

I hobbled towards HM. I was in a ton of pain, but thankfully next to nobody was going this way, so I just went slowly.

We got to HM and sure enough, it was closed. I was having issues with the app, so we decided to try PotC next. I went as quickly as I could.

When we got to PotC, it too was having issues and was also closed. This was not shaping up to be a good morning. If memory serves correctly BTMRR was also closed...which was not good since it was one of our early FPs and it's the kids' fave. So, it was just a bad morning and it was just after 9.

25407032498_354e7d5fcc_c.jpg

We checked the Jingle Cruise, but supposedly they were running at reduced capacity for some reason and were up to a 45 min wait.

I was starting to have flashbacks to our 2012 trip that was full of ride breakdowns. If you followed that trip or our 2013 trip, you might recall that Disney gave us a couple of days worth of complimentary hoppers with no expiration to make up for it. I wasn't going to bother complaining this time, but what keeps sticking in my head is the phone rep's logic for hoppers. She had said, you can always go to another park if the one you're in is having a lot of breakdown issues. I guess that's true, but it's awful logic to use to justify the expense of hoppers.

I really needed to sit, so we headed to the Tiki Room.

25407029468_72515605d0_c.jpg

To add to the issues, they skipped the pre-show.

It's late, so I'm calling it quits for now. I will post at some point tomorrow. Coming up...Tiki Birds get a new friend, we adopt a bear, and a lot of rushing around. Thanks for following along :)

I was happy that the CM followed through with all of the "wake up Jose" dialogue. We've had a few in the past who just skip it.

I do enjoy (ok...LOVE) the Tiki Room, so this wasn't an awful thing to me, but there was a spider that had made a home in the perch for "the girls." I don't do well with spiders and I don't like seeing them residing in my favorite Disney attractions, so I was a bit freaked out. The birds sing words and the spiders spin?

After our tropical serenade, we made our way past some bears and to our first FP...BTMRR. We also checked out the app (now working) and HM and PotC were still down, so might as well use the FP now. At least BTMRR is now up. Good timing!

I don't know why, but for some reason during this trip, the whole wildest ride in the wilderness thing became our thing to say. Some trips, it's the Aloha and 'Ohana and the Poly, but after this point...everything was the wildest ride in the wilderness (including slow boats and the monorail). And now we're on it! The real one, that is. LOL

And we're off...

It was fun, but we all kind of felt like it was slow. I think so much of it is psychological. It feels faster at night and will feel slower if the last coasters we've ridden are more intense.

I checked the app after we were done and PotC and HM were still down. Wait times were climbing all over the place, so David decided to be nice and agreed to ride IASW. We had a FP for Splash that opened up around 10:20 and an ADR at 'Ohana at 11:15, so we also were worried about timing. So, we started heading towards IASW...

I think this is Liver Lips. He just sort of sidled in between me and the girls and we all held hands...well, minus David. Not sure what that's about. We told him we were headed to IASW and he signaled that he liked that plan. A CM also ran up and offered to take pics with my camera. I'm still pretty protective of the new camera and was planning on using the older one (that I forgot) for hand offs like this, but I couldn't miss getting this. This is one of my favorite moments of the entire trip. It reminds me a lot of how character interactions used to be...just totally random.

Unfortunately, Liver Lips could not go beyond the boundaries of Frontierland, so we parted ways and kept heading to IASW. The app said the wait was still only 15 minutes, so we were hoping we'd find the same when we got there.

It was 15 min when we entered the line, but then it changed to 25 immediately after then 30 shortly thereafter. So, we hopped out of line and booked it over to Splash. My poor feet were not happy, but they moved. We got there just as our window was about to open...

It's around this time that I was really missing my poncho. I usually use mine to wrap up my camera. So, I did my best to stuff it into my backpack and protect it. It has a weather resistant case on it, but that's just the body and I really didn't want any of it getting soaked. Thankfully, all was ok.

Now it was time to run for the monorail. My feet and legs were so angry with me, but it had to be done. It was chaos on Main Street, but things were pretty quiet up at the monorail.

Too soon...it's back on. I guess there must have been an ever so slight chill on the monorail. LOL

As much as I adore the Contemporary, this would be our only time in there this trip. I'm not a fan of its gingerbread, so I didn't feel the need to go out of my way.

Side note...people will look at you funny if you start sniffing as the monorail doors open at the Contemporary. Hey, I was just trying to sniff in the scent of all of that Contemporary goodness!

I also started getting "where are you ?!?!?!" texts from my dad...because everyone else was there and waiting. We're getting there!!! Ummm-we're at the TTC dad...we're close!
