Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

We still had time to burn, so we went classic and went into CoP...

So, things started up and I take a few pics...

...and then exhaustion...overwhelming exhaustion...takes over. The next thing I know, the kids are nudging me to wake up because it's over. I hate that I did this. I was previously told no on Country Bears, so CoP was another classic to help fill some of that void. I really enjoy CoP, but I guess I needed the rest. I guess my brain must have channeled the old music and thought "Now is the time, now is the best time, now is the best time for a NAP!"

Not my video, but if you REALLY need to get the old music in your head...

After this, we headed over to the Laugh Floor...

39277210451_374ca50434_c.jpg

...and things were oddly quiet over there. I approached the CMs and they said it was down and I should have gotten an alert that we could use our Laugh Floor FPs for any attraction other than SDMT (and maybe Peter Pan). I didn't get the alert, but I saw it when I opened the app. So, I'm in sort of shock and disbelief and ask the one CM if I can use it for Space Mountain. OF course I could- it wasn't on that small list she gave me, but talk about trading up. I randomly go for Monsters Inc. and convert that to Space Mountain...which had a wait around 120 min. SCORE! This is one time I'm not overly bothered about a breakdown.

39277208541_ef1c3195af_c.jpg

So, we waste no time and go right for Space Mountain. Kendall is not happy, but this is the plan...

And after just one launch sequence pic...I decided I just wasn't in the mood and was just going to sit back and ride.

Kendall informed us afterwards that nothing hurt this time and that she enjoyed it.

After that, we took a family ride on the Peoplemover...

I mentioned foreshadowing...well, we're going on Stitch. I know I am in the minority, but I don't hate it. I don't love it, but it doesn't anger me like it does so many other guests. I think I've shared this before, but my very first attraction I experienced at WDW was Mission to Mars, which was originally in this space. While very old school nostalgic feeling, it was kind of boring. I also wasn't a huge fan of Alien Encounter, so that's probably why I don't hate Stitch.

So, we were at SGE...and since it might eventually be going (at least before we return to WDW), I took a number of pics...

So yea...I still don't hate it. Sam didn't like how it felt on her shoulders and one of the kids complained that it smelled like salami. I recall wanting a good Italian sub after that.

I also decided to snap some random pics in Tomorrowland as we started walking...

Somewhere between the Peoplemover and Stitch, I started hunting for FPs. Everyone was sort of losing energy and it was sounding like this would be our last ride of the day, so I had to make it something good and iconic.

27501334129_91a676414f_c.jpg

Kendall was not happy. Sam, on the other hand, was getting a third spin on HM for the day...

It does kind of make me wonder if Kendall might benefit from this tech they've I guess patented and may be implementing. Like can they give her an HM experience that is less scary to her. Not that she loves any of it, but it's really just the ghosts that pop up in the graveyard that really scare her.

I asked if anyone wanted me to look for more FPs after this, but everyone was done. There was something sort of bittersweet about this, but we started to make the slow walk out...

38569863694_d85dc67812_c.jpg

We hit the shop by Philharmagic...

I was tempted to buy one of these shirts, but I couldn't justify it. My mind always shifts to "can I wear it to work?" The reality, minus our critical times and special seminars/meetings, I'm working from home several days a week...so, I should have realized that I definitely can wear these on certain work days. Oh well.

It was around this time that the kids ran back over by Pooh to pick up something from that shop. We were getting down to the last bits on their gift cards and they wanted to spend it all!

I didn't take a pic of it until a little later, but this was what was purchased...

Now it was time to start heading up to the front of the park...

And it's the long walk out of MK...with several stops...

38569855114_50cc2ce387_c.jpg

(it didn't even cross my mind that I cut off the top of the castle until after the trip)

Sam was kind of bothered that we weren't doing MVMCP after seeing the Jack and Sally M&G area....

38569853984_1c2616bdca_c.jpg

Personally, I am not a fan of the Jack costume. Samantha was Jack Skellington for Halloween in 2016 and while I realize it's no Disney Parks m&g, I much prefer her costume.

29353233002_7c7249a20f_c.jpg

Plus, I was Sally...so if she was Jack and I was Sally...it's like we've already covered that M&G on our own. LOL

OK...back on track...we headed over to the restrooms by Crystal Palace and Casey's...

38569852974_a7d5dd545f_c.jpg

And then it was time to sit and relax for a moment and soak it all in...

38569848594_1425248d2a_c.jpg

Well, sort of relax. We saw an older gentleman vomiting into the flowerbeds right here. Not only did it destroy the serenity and peace of the moment...I really just don't want puke in the flowers. Not to mention that there's a bathroom right there. So, David found a CM and notified her. She looked a bit more official. She was dressed more professionally, but not like a tour guide or the new suited CMs you see in the parks. I don't know, the clipboard and ipad/tablet as well as walkie-talkie sort of device seemed more official. So, David let her know and while she thanked him, she also didn't seem concerned. I won't dwell on this too much, but we took a very slow walk out of MK and we passed this man multiple times (like over the course of 30 min) and he was puking up and down MSUSA every time we saw him. He was still getting sick in the shrubs when we got down to the train station. I feel for the man, but it's also not OK to do this and it would have been nice if someone intervened.

We made a quick stop to buy Kendall another something...

39248170692_0786856ced_c.jpg

See, I mentioned back on the 17th that a Porg would be coming home with us.

This is also not how I envisioned our final MK departure. Not that puke is how anyone ever pictures that, but my original plan had us riding the Jingle Cruise around 4:15pm and then having a "Snacketizer" meal at Skipper Canteen. I thought by the time we finished up, we could see the castle lighting and then be ready for a later fireworks timed meal at a monorail resort. I even looked into a carriage ride at the Fort to break up the time and do something new. Nobody liked this plan...so this was it. One of these days I will get into Skipper Canteen.

So, I just took pics on the way out...

39248167182_790fa26d29_c.jpg

39248166342_09bfcc6593_c.jpg

I never took a pic of the castle on the way out, but it's probably because I was emotional. While I will get to it in the conclusion, we had already been discussing taking a lengthy break, and I knew this would be my last time seeing the castle while inside MK for some time.

So, we left and considered the monorail...

39248165382_d10f1b33fc_c.jpg

...but decided on the boat instead.

25410132248_a8ba54997c_c.jpg

I normally associate these bigger boats with the launch to WL and the Fort, but I guess crowds were expected to be large enough to warrant the big boats on the Poly and GF route as well.

We were inside at the start...

Feel sorry for the guy puking, but feel worse for you having to witness it (multiple times)! :hungover:

Yeah...I mean, this couldn't have been fun for him. I know it can be like this at any time of year, but I saw a lot of people posting from my FB groups that people were coming down with stomach bugs left and right during our dates. So, maybe that was his issue.

OK...let's see if I can get one more post in before lunch is over.

Dec 22nd Cont-

I honestly don't remember how many times I changed up our last night plans. In fact, I made the final change just the day before. We knew we didn't want to go to MVMCP, but I kept thinking it might be nice to be in a good spot to see Holiday Wishes. I had wanted 'Ohana, but I couldn't get anything at 180 and after 6 months of pre-trip stalking, I still could never get anything. My insurance plan was a dinner at Narcoosee's. I had an 8:45 booked, but I also was contemplating everything from the Fort with dinner at Trail's End and fireworks from the beach...to even skipping all of this and heading to Disney Springs. At some point, I even had a really late ADR booked at the Boathouse just in case. We're also Landry's rewards members (Houston is sort of Landry's restaurant central), so even TRex was in my mind if I wanted something fun.

The kids wanted to stay MK area and nobody wanted to go over to the Fort, but David also isn't a huge fan of Narcoosee's. He said he'd do it if I couldn't get 'Ohana, but he asked me to keep stalking while we were at WDW to see if I could get it. I had a few 9:55pm slots come up, but he didn't want anything that late. So, the day before, I landed an 8:25pm at 'Ohana. It's always taken forever for us to be seated at 'Ohana dinner and it had always been a well-paced to slow-paced meal for us, so I really thought we would be able to see fireworks with this timing. Unless you count my obstructed last minute view Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam!, we hadn't seen any fireworks this trip. So, I was hopeful.

But, we still had tons of time before ADR time and we wanted to enjoy and relax. The kids and I changed clothes and after seeing Trader Sam's (inside) was standing room only, we headed outside to the terrace. It's too bad because we were kind of hoping to see what it was like compared to Disneyland's. I had recommended it to my parents a few months back and they loved it. The videos I've seen looked similar to CA's, but for whatever reason, I felt a different vibe in the FL location. Not bad...just different. Oh well, we were good with the terrace.

39248156432_92604c5887_c.jpg

I initially went for a table with a view of MK, but David wanted to feel more like it was a tropical getaway, so we picked an area by the rock waterfall and settled in.

25410229858_456222130d_c.jpg

The kids had a couple of rounds of non-alcoholic stuff (which is hard to tell from the grown up drinks when you're looking at these things months later). David and I tried a number of things on the grown ups portion of the menu.

Happy boy!

The new house has a big bar and the Nautilus is just sitting there. We use the bar and will eventually get around to making that part of the room fun, but for now...it just sits there being all sad with a few leis. Our server tried to tempt us with the Christmas limited edition option, but the elephant wearing a Santa hat (pretty sure that's what it was), just wasn't our thing. She said they just got a bunch, but this was the first time she could remember a limited edition option not flying off the shelves. Oh well.

I was surprised that I didn't enjoy the spiky pineapple as much as I thought I would. I think it's because I usually use coconut rum if I make Dole Whips at home.

25410230648_d8883fdbe7_c.jpg

Oh look, they're modeling...

Funny...when I ordered this one, our server made sure I like Rumchata, because I guess not everyone does.

38400244445_0601922455_c.jpg

Speaking of our server, she was super chatty and a lot of fun. I believe she said she was previously in HS and was still upset over the loss of GMR, but super excited for all of the Star Wars stuff. I didn't tell her I was never a GMR fan, but tried to spin it that it will be interesting to see all they do with the space. Not that either one of us love this new style of Mickey animation, but still excited to see what they do with the space.

More random drink pics...

Look, we got another glow cube! These are now sitting inside the home bar, so sometimes I just make myself glow drinks for fun. It's vital when you find yourself having to do a lot of "adulting." LOL

We also had a couple of silly selfies where Sam tried to make it look like a photobomb even though she was part of the whole thing.

At some point in all of this, the kids went over to watch Moana, so we just had a nice time relaxing. I even went off on my own for a bit to watch the castle lighting...didn't even bring my camera.

38569824504_4ea8bf860d_c.jpg

I even got sucked in for a minute and just watched while periodically taking a pic here or there...

We went through the store a bit at first to see if I could find anything good for my cowowrkers. Yah...this won't do...even if it is cool.

38569822524_f9391609be_c.jpg

We also caught the tail end of a choir performing Christmas music in the lobby...

We went upstairs and I did happen to finally find something suitable. And now when my boss has to return things to me, I get notes on Mickey bar stickies.

38569820844_bde0742bd9_c.jpg

After that, I checked into 'Ohana. It was only just after 8pm, but David was getting hungry and figured it couldn't hurt. I warned him how long we've waited in the past and it could still be another 45 minutes before we were seated (maybe longer since we were almost 25 minutes early), but he wanted me to do it anyway. So, I checked in and got my buzzer and sat down for what I expected to be a crazy wait.

So, when I left off, we had just checked in for 'Ohana dinner and had taken a seat to wait. Not even 5 minutes had passed and the unthinkable happened...our buzzer went off.

I thought it must be a mistake, but no...we were being seated and it wasn't even 8:10. At this point, I thought we had really slim chances of seeing fireworks from our meal, so enjoying our dinner was the key focus. Not that it wouldn't have been, but I do love a fireworks timed meal. Still, we thought that it still might work out if we had the relaxed pace we always seem to have at 'Ohana.

We ended up in the center of the dining room, but we could see the castle from our table...

This poor family ended up in all of my pics. I was trying to share with friends as sort of a "look where we are and check out the view!"

We meet our server and he's super energetic and has that great 'Ohana vibe, but energetic sort of turned into the Energizer Bunny on overdrive. He takes our drink order and says he'll be back with our bread. He also had our salad and platter of veggies, noodles and dumplings. OK, so not completely crazy, but we start trying to serve ourselves...he comes by with the meat too. We told him we weren't quite ready yet, but he started loading up our plates anyway...with this Eaaat Eaaat sort of urging.

Kendall actually asked for a few shrimp and after giving her beef from one skewer, he unloaded the entire skewer of shrimp onto her plate. This pic was taken at the end of the meal and she was still trying to finish off shrimp. I was going to try and get a picture of it when it was first heaped on, but he started loading up my already full plate again.

39248137572_fd290658c0_c.jpg

I remember joking when I took this that we could finally see some plate.

We had so much food all at once and our plates had no room, but he kept asking if we wanted more or if we were ready to move on to dessert and even when we said wait, he would load more. It was so bizarre.

It wasn't until the tail end of our rushed meat fest did my Lapu Lapu arrive...

The people at the table next to us were wondering if this was an alcoholic drink, because their son wanted one. Turns out he just turned 21, but they were on their way out, so I guess they wouldn't be having it with their meal.

We stalled out a bit by doing coconut races...well, the kids did coconut races.

I had more meat being pushed at me, so I never really got set up for good race pics...

*So much meat loaded on that the platter in the middle has barely been touched. Side note...I normally love those dumplings, but I'm guessing they've either changed their recipe or changed the outside vendor (or said vendor changed the recipe) if they're not house made. They were not good and I was not pleased.

I can't remember if they got tired or bored, but they came back to the table, and I took some bad out of focus pics of them.

It was a whirlwind experience as it was, but now we were on to bread pudding.

25410202348_dee7941339_c.jpg

This is the saddest looking piece of bread pudding I have ever received. It tasted good (minus that banana end that got pushed aside), but the portion was about a third to quarter of what we normally receive. We've had mixed results getting seconds of the bread pudding, even though it's supposed to be AYCTE, but I could always use my past pics as evidence if I got any resistance asking for seconds. Example...this was my bread pudding from 2013...

10366671506_557d51eec1_c.jpg

Ultimately, in eating so quickly, we didn't have room for much of it anyway. I think everything tasted good, but man...it's hard to tell when it flies by like this.

Oh...and that Lapu Lapu...something was off with it. David said the same thing about his. Neither one of us finished them (I barely drank mine).

Our server was kind enough to make a mistake in our favor during billing and give us the passholder discount, but I was still bothered at the speed dining experience this turned out to be. I realize we could have sat there and forced him into a slower pace, but he kept pushing. All in all, we were leaving just before 9...so, 'Ohana dinner in under an hour (including check in). Considering we've always averaged over 2 hours at 'Ohana dinner, from check in to walking out, 50-55 min felt like speed dining. And no matter how much you try and put a stop to it and slow the pace, the mood suffers as soon as it becomes clear that they're trying to get rid of you ASAP.

Everyone was tired and I was the only one that cared about frireworks, so we left and started heading to the car.

I got all turned around and didn't find the proper path to the TTC...but we just following the monorail...

We also ran into a bit of an issue. Remember how David was cutting all around parking lots earlier in the trip. Well, he did the same at the TTC right into the tram lanes. I told him he needed to go around, but he wasn't listening to me. And the CMs who were right there decided to reprimand me rather than him. I had one foot off the curb as I'm trying to wave him our way and show him we're going the safer/proper way yet I get scolded and how it's all for our safety. I know! I'm trying to go the safe way and get my husband to do the same. Scold him!

My feet were also throbbing a bit since I'd switched back into those stupid cushy flip flops for dinner and drinks. They looked better with my outfit! The kids wisely swapped out their footwear, but I didn't do the same for myself. So, it was a painful trek back to the TTC and we opted for the tram.

It was an uneventful ride back to the Swan, but when we got there...I was BUSY. We had to check out the next day, we had updated our 8:15am ADR to 8am (not that 15 min makes a huge difference...then again it could) and we needed to hit the road right when we were done. Boarding for our dog ended on the 24th, they were booked rock solid for the holidays, and were only open until noon on Christmas Eve...so we had to be back in town in time to get her. I was still a bit bothered about dinner, but I was looking forward to our farewell breakfast, so that helped me along with the late night packing.

December 23rd - Departure Day

It was a bizarre feeling...I was waking up on our last day at WDW and I wasn't really sad. I woke up before everyone else and finished my final prep of bags so we could get them downstairs and load them into my vehicle. David was hoping we could get a luggage cart, but they wouldn't let us use one unless we were using a bellman. I know we've used our own at the Disney owned deluxes and I know we'd see this less than an hour after this when we were at the GF (unless they weren't supposed to be doing this in the Disney resorts)...but Swan rules...so I guess we have to comply.

The bellman was fast, checkout was pretty simple and we loaded up the car with ease (no overpacking this time, so no cramming of stuff into my cargo area) and we were on our way to the GF. The CM at the guard shack was checking ADR numbers this time. I guess with it now being Dec 23rd, we are in full holiday swing on the resort side and things are in crack down mode so that people just don't randomly park there...or so it seemed.

We head in...

And look who we see also arriving bright and early at the GF...yup it's Richard Gerth.

We never get a chance to meet him because he's such a popular CM. Even at 7:30am, when he's arriving for the day, and he's already with other guests. I at least hoped for better luck on the way out.

We're still a bit early, so we head in and I take a few pics...

We decided to go sit outside of 1900 PF and wait for it to open. As I noted before, I originally had an 8:15am ADR, but really wanted the 8 just to have every bit of time we could early on so we weren't having to rush any more than necessary. Plus, we've been to 1900 PF for later seatings where things got really backed up and we couldn't take that risk. A day or two before, I started looking to see if anything had opened up and there it was....and 8am. So I swapped it out. The odd thing...it changed from being the Supercalifragilistic breakfast to 1900 PF Brunch. It was still listed as a character meal, so I didn't freak out completely. Now, I've seen other meals shift to brunch later on in the morning, but this was an 8am. So, I was curious to see how this would be. 1900 PF is one of our all time faves...only second to Crystal Palace as far as character breakfasts go. I had still heard lots of good things before our trip, so I was cautiously optimistic that nothing would be wrong.

So, we went over and waited...

Before long, the doors opened and it was sort of a free for all. They just let everyone in and had them mill about for a few minutes before they figured out how to get everyone to their tables. It was so odd. I have no clue why they didn't just do a structured seating from outside the doors like they did with dinner (or really any other time we've been to 1900 PF).

27501256959_c6288a5727_c.jpg

So, we finally figure out where we're supposed to sit and I took a few pics...

27501255529_ae740216a4_c.jpg

They brought K an allergy menu and we hit the buffet. My pecan sticky buns are back and this time they are good. So a return to quality for these.

27501254049_926231bb2a_c.jpg

What did bother me is what was missing and what was there.

MISSING - The whole bagel set up with the lox spread, the dill cream cheese and the smoked salmon. The lobster benedict was also gone.

ADDED - Several things we saw on the dinner buffet, including that the feta and farro salad.

So, two of my fave things are gone, they are higher end items on the buffet, and I saw nothing of equal or greater quality to replace them. I enjoyed that farro salad the first night, so I figured I'd at least try it again...and here's where my feelings turn to disgust and anger. That salad was not fresh. I've made farro enough times and eaten it at restaurants too. It changes when it's been sitting in the fridge overnight...it's a textural and moisture change from it drying out out that isn't present when it's fresh when it's freshly prepared. On top of that, the feta changed. Obviously, feta has a tang to it regardless, but I've tasted feta that's sat in my fridge or in a dish that's sat as leftovers for a few days and it goes from tang to this strange sharpness (like it's going bad). The feta in the salad this morning had that taste change, like it was starting to turn. I know Disney restaurants have become unpredictable with their consistency, but I think this goes well beyond that. This really tasted like we were being fed day old food leftover from the dinner buffet and paying an upcharge for it so they could slap that brunch label on it. Add that to them removing higher end items from the menu and I was just mad. David and the kids grabbed some other things that we'd previously had at dinner and had similar issues.

The characters were also flying through the tables. The face characters walked up, said a quick quirky line in character, posed and moved on. I don't think any of them were there longer than 20-30 seconds.

I missed getting all 4 characters in this pic by like a second, but it was like this super speedy character assembly line.

27501239089_fbe6a5d70f_c.jpg

I thought maybe I was just imagining this rushed feeling, but then I saw the family seated next to us prior to opening had just paid their check and were leaving. I checked the time and it was just after 8:30 (like 8:33). A 30 minute character meal! No, they weren't rushing people or anything! I get that it's a buffet and you can choose to pace yourselves, but even our server came by at this point asking if we were ready for the check....kind of a, "you've seen everyone, now leave!" OK...not that harsh, but it felt that way and as more and more people were leaving from this first seating, the more it felt like this was no longer a nice and relaxed meal...as far as character meals go.

We tried to push it a bit longer and get a bit more food just because we didn't want to stop for food for a while. I had a question about a menu item, had the chef come out and for the first time in our years of dining at Disney with allergies, the chef was kind of clueless. I asked him if they were treating coconut as a nut since it was saying "contains" vs. a cross contamination risk. The way we left things, I wasn't 100% and had to use my best judgement.

By 8:45, there was nothing left to eat or do- we were really just sitting there, so we left (had already paid of course). At least the Tigger on the way out was pretty energetic...although, no bounce offs occurred.

After that, I took a few pics in the lobby while everyone took that final trip to the restroom before hitting the road. I was trying to see the beauty and still salvage a way to end on a positive note, because deep down (ok, it was really close to the surface), I was mad. This was not how our last meal was supposed to go, this is not how our trip was supposed to be capped off and on top of that, it was once one of our faves that we were now having to write off. Still, the pictures were semi-therapeutic.

On our way out, we did have a stroke of luck...or maybe it was magic. There was Richard Gerth standing at the entry and there were no other guests around. So, my last two trip pictures were of the girls with Mr. Gerth.

25410136308_b7851d80e6_c.jpg

25410128108_09dddb24fe_c.jpg

They'd later tell me that he saw them in the lobby before the meal and he was joking with them about stuff...something about a queen on the throne in front of the tree...or something like that. They thought he was so sweet and funny and I thought this was a great way to end the trip, especially after being disappointed in our last two supposed to be special dining experiences.

We got on the road back to the Houston area just a little after 9am ET. The drive home was pretty uneventful...which is good. We made record time and actually got home around 11:30pm CT. So, a bit earlier than expected, meaning the trip only went until the 23rd vs. the 24th like I planned/expected. We actually got a fairly normal night's sleep. My bed is pretty much identical to the Swan's, but the real joy was being able to sleep in our guest room away from Sir Snores A Lot. We got to even sleep in a little and got the dog with plenty of time to spare, and went into full Christmas Eve mode with making cookies and thawing out the ham I'd bought for Christmas. Santa even found it in his heart to put a few things under the tree even though the kids were just spoiled like crazy.

That just stinks that your last two meals were so bad. Now I'm worried about our 'Ohana dinner we have scheduled in June. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it was just a bad night!!

I really hope you have a much better experience. I know of a handful of people that had similar 'Ohana experiences, but they were also around the same time as our trip. I can only wonder if this was something "special" being done in anticipation of holiday crowds. It's unfortunate because 'Ohana can be such a great experience.

Closing Thoughts-

I know I sounded very doom and gloom at times, but we also tried not to dwell on these things while there. We kept moving forward and did our best to ensure the trip still had all kinds of magic. Every time I encountered a rant-worthy issue, we got past it and just moved on to hopefully find more positive things. So, I guess that's where the TR title comes in. All too often, I see people saying their trips were ruined, but you have the power to keep things magical! It's also certainly OK to be bothered when things aren't up to snuff in your opinion and you can use these experiences to make vacation decisions for the future.

I'm also not trying to create a debate or change anyone's mind on these things. Case in point, I have a good friend from work getting ready to take her young boys for the first time. I advised her not to read my TR until after she's back so that she can enjoy all of the pre-trip and trip excitement without any of my concerns in mind. I know how magical this can be...especially a young child's first visit...and I don't want to do anything to have any kind of negative impact on their experience.

I have rewritten this conclusion so many times, but I think the point I'd like to convey most is that we still do love the Disney Parks and WDW. I mean, I'm still driving around with my hidden Mickey (doesn't photograph well since it's hidden LOL) and bright and shiny hitch plug...

27519647435_3c6e5f4af6_c.jpg

I've also been carrying Disney Dooney nearly every day (currently in my Disneyland retro tote with lots of Disney Dooney goodies inside).

In fact, I think that's why the things that bothered us produced such a strong reaction. If I didn't love being at WDW so much, I probably could have just brushed it off. I'm even getting over some of my negativity with this past trip...to the point that I'm tempted to start planning the next visit. I won't, but the temptation is there. Heck, I watched PTN's debut at DCA the other night and I started wondering how I can convince David to go back to California! Seriously...When Can We Do This Again!?!?!?!?

So really, when are we going to do this again?
- We need a break. So, we're thinking 2021 or 2022 as the answer to that question, although...it'll likely be WDW and not DLR. I also suspect we'll be splitting time between WDW and Uni. We were supposed to this trip, but things just sort of fell apart with that...which I kind of regret not pulling together. We are torn on a lot of things with it and with so much being built and so much time until the projected next trip, a lot of things could change. The only thing I can say for certain about our next trip is that we will be cutting way back on TS dining. Hey, it'll at least free up a lot of space in the budget for other things.

Oh...and the Swan...no regrets, but David asked that we not stay there again. I look at it this way...it cost a little bit less than a room only rate I was quoted for POR, (including the resort and parking fees), the room is about the same size as the rooms at WL and AKL (340 vs 344 sq ft), the location is on par with any of the Disney owned Epcot resorts, the bed quality is on par with the monorail and Epcot resort beds, and the Swan's room view was the best view we've ever had on any Disney vacation. Obviously, it was not without its flaws, but the Swan did something Disney NEVER does. When I wrote a review on TripAdvisor, the Swan read it and replied that they'd be addressing my concerns with staff. Whether they do or not is out of my control, but the last time I voiced my concerns to Disney about a resort, it was brushed off...so, I appreciated this from the Swan.

OK...so if you're still reading after all of this rambling...you may be wondering what we do plan on doing for our upcoming vacations. While I have a lot of things we are going to try to do, the first big one actually has some Disney roots. The last time we took a lengthy break from Disney trips, the parks, resorts, and movies inspired us to go out and see things in the real world. One of those Disney inspired trips was Yellowstone...and to say it was amazing is an understatement. Last time, it was pre-kids and we strictly focused on Yellowstone (with a little bit of Grand Teton). This time will still have a heavy focus on Yellowstone, but we'll also be seeing Little Bighorn, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Cody, planning a mild whitewater rafting day, and if there's time...Grand Teton and maybe even a drive into Idaho (just to add another state to the list of places we've traveled).

Last time we went, I was shooting with my old film SLR. I was limited to 12 rolls of film and everything I've got was converted to digital format (by a photography shop- not me) based on tech from nearly 13 years ago. Still, I thought I'd share some of the beauty that we can't wait to share with the kids...

Funny...in Yellowstone you really don't need things like a woods view. The wildlife can choose to just hang out by your cabin no matter where you're staying. It's quite different when these guys are real and not some topiary on your resort grounds.

16291179158_eeb89073e2.jpg

(snow and it's just a week or so after Labor Day!)

Speaking of topiaries, I know there's one of Canada geese at WDW/WL. We spent some time observing a pair of trumpeter swans, when a Canada goose decided to join the party. The photography/wildlife guide we hired said they are not very common in Yellowstone and the swans would likely show him who is boss. I didn't have any kind of real zoom on this trip (regrets) but this is that goose being "asked" to leave.

Fun fact- the ground around the geysers is warmed by the water beneath the crust. It was in the 40s when I was photographing Old Faithful and Beehive in these pics, but I was nice and toasty because I was sitting on the ground. Florida is warm enough year round, that I guess you might get the same effect if you sit on the ground by WL's man-made geyser.

16287229138_ff497c01b4.jpg

They really aren't kidding about these warnings. This bull elk got angry at a Winnebago earlier in the week, gored the grill, and killed a water pump. The day after I took this, we saw him battling it out with another bull for his herd, Wild Kingdom style, while we ate dinner. He survived, but he lost, and he spent the night hanging out in the parking lot by our cabin for that stretch of the trip.

16451386816_de78f3735e_c.jpg

I'd also love to share amazing Old Faithful Inn pics with you, but it was under construction during our last visit...so we saw a lot of tarps. Still, it is incredible to see it in person and it sort of ruined WL for me. The Inn is ridiculously popular for lodging too. We got one night at the Inn last trip and weren't really wowed staying in it, so it was filed under things we've done to say we've done it. Oh, and if you ever wanted to stay there as a bucket list sort of thing...you need to book pretty far out (true of a lot of the lodging actually) and only the rooms in the old house have that cool rustic feel...but they also don't have in room bathrooms. They have a sink, but showers and toilets are shared and down the hall. You only get those in your room if you stay in the newer wings that felt more modern and a lot like WL. Still, the common areas are amazing.

And that's pretty much it. I can only hope having a DSLR this time around will lead to thousands of beautiful pictures. It's not in the budget to buy a true super telephoto (nor does it make sense since I have devoted so little time to improving my photography and learning my camera), and I'd be too nervous traveling with a rental. So, I may not be getting those ultra long range shots, so my telephoto is just going to have to do. It's a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens...so nothing amazing, but it did a good job with a number of things on this trip and it'll have to do. My newish Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II will have to do for wider angle shots. I'll spare you my bald eagle and golden eagle pics from last trip where the birds just looked like little specks. So, it'll be an improvement no matter how you look at it.

And if I'm really missing Disney characters...I'm sure we'll see some chipmunks...

And hey, there are deer mice in Yellowstone...so maybe even a mouse!

Sorry to spam you with so many non-Disney pics at the end, but we're just excited about our future adventures. Thanks for following along everyone! Hope all of your trips are magical!!!
