Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

I live in flips here in the summer but I couldn't imagine doing the park's in them.

I have always avoided the traditional thin flat bottom ones, but Skechers and FitFlops make super cushy ones that have some arch support and a lot of padding. The Clarks ones are supposed to be walking flip flops and I've seen a ton of people in them, but the velcro constantly opened up on them and the padding on the ball of the foot wasn't enough. We had a day in 2016 where we went about 17mi in walking and by the end of the day, I had a golf ball sized blister on the ball of my foot. I usually have on a nice pair of distance joggers, but for warm weather trips (which 2016 was a July trip), I find keeping my feet cool is a big part of the formula in keeping me cool. This time, I was just dumb enough to grab everyday socks vs. athletic tech socks which pad a lot better and was stuck trying to protect my heels. Stupid me :in pain:

My parents were heading home right after this meal, so this would be our last big meal with everyone together. That picture I shared at the beginning of the TR was all she wanted...all of us in a pic together. She'd approached the photopass photog before we got there and went over details several times. LOL We took the picture...I think she probably had to take 20+ shots to get us all looking at he camera and then it was time to wait.

My niece was all silly while we waited...

39245219492_87fb6b6bea_c.jpg

It was also around this time that I remembered...CAKE! I ordered a cake to be delivered to this meal, and because it's the Poly, the GF bakery makes you pay in advance. So, I paid for it...and it needed to be there. And of course the girl at the hostess stand showed no indication of a cake. Still, she suggested I talk to the CM seating us when our buzzer goes off to confirm. I was not freaking out too much. We had something similar happen at Kona when we had a farewell cake there for our 2016 trip. I was happier with Kona's handling of things, but more on that in a bit.

The buzzer went off and I headed to the front with all 10 of us in tow. The kids didn't know about the cake, so I was trying my best to discreetly ask about it. So, of course my dad starts loudly asking about the hold up when the CM walks off and tells me to stay there. LOL She comes back out, says it's there and gushes that it's beautiful! I had really high expectations. After I had the GF do a more basic cake for us in 2015, I had them do a Haunted Mansion cake in 2016...which was incredible (see below)...

28487013492_75e66b7383_c.jpg

See...the 2016 cake was great! So, after this and my 2015 Cheshire Cat cake, I was feeling much better about working with the GF. On top of that, when I talked to Pat about my plans for this cake, she said something about using some of the extra decorations they keep on hand for the GF gingerbread house on our 2017 cake. That got me REALLY excited. I had gone through all kinds of sketches to come to this idea and now she's saying I can have gingerbread house goodies...even better! Ultimately, after going through 6 design ideas, I decided on a cake piped with green frosting to look like pine (i.e. a Christmas tree), draped in strands of edible lights, and topped with golden mouse ears. I also wanted red velvet to go with the whole red and green Christmas theme. At this point, my only concern was over the frosting tip. I suggested they use the one they use for Sully, Chebacca and Muppet cakes, but she didn't like that. While you can't see the pine effect, this was the sketch I did that came the closest to what I was requesting...

I swear, the things I do when I'm bored. LOL

After a short wait, we were seated. I knew it was a late seating and it felt like things were starting to wind down already. We were also seated in that side area off to the right. We sat here for dinner in 2011 and it always felt like we were isolated from the rest of the place. Oh well, we're seated and I can already see Mickey is close by.

At least my nephew is excited!

39245215742_e6edcb5fde_c.jpg

If you saw my 2012 trip, he's the infant in that TR and in my 2013 TR, he's the toddler in the high chair. Growing up!

They brought us some fruit...

...and then it was time for a visit from Stitch. I was doing my best to get him coming in for the sneak attack, but there was so much glare.

I took some detail pics...never noticed these before. It just shows how oblivious I am to the obvious sometimes.

I was nervous because our last breakfast experience at 'Ohana wound up being three rounds of inedible food (it was really bad), but this was all pretty decent. I've heard a few people gripe about the ham, but I prefer it over Disney bacon, and Samantha LOVED it! She was going on and on about getting Christmas ham early. Hey...it worked for her.

It's puppy time!

I tell ya, while I don't miss the diapers, I do miss having little ones who interact with character like this.

You can't see it in any of the pics here (but I think you can when she's on the monorail), but I put Sam in her LLR Pluto leggings for this one. Yes, it seemed like each day we were part of the never ending sea of LLR leggings. Of course, I never found a good match for hers, so she's in a PotC shirt. Nothing like mix n' match Disney gear. My parents are near one of the Character Warehouses, so she is always in there scoping out and scooping up deals. It's how I got my Star Wars Dooney last summer at a fraction of the retail price.

27979482374_610a9de6c3_c.jpg

It's the only Star Wars pattern to date that I've liked and it comes in handy. While I can wear it just because, I can wear it on May the 4th, to Star Wars movies, and I wore it in tribute after Carrie Fisher passed.

Ok...back to trip stuff...And here comes Lilo...

38567011074_00edeeb651_c.jpg

I also love the Stitch waffles, but for whatever reason, the kids didn't think they tasted as good as the Mickey ones. LOL

38567010094_8fd874a787_c.jpg

So, things were winding down and our server made no mention of cake. Look..it's become a ghost town!

24412156167_6586da30e2_c.jpg

We were at the point where they were checking to make sure we'd seen all of the characters and the place was looking pretty empty, so I brought it up. I guess I figured this was communicated to her when we were seated since I made sure to have the first lady check for her. Nope...she knew nothing about the cake and again said there was nothing on our reservation about it. When this happened at Kona, the manager immediately jumped in and cake info was passed on to everyone without me having to do any extra legwork. Obviously, that didn't happen at 'Ohana and our server seemed bothered, like it was time for us to go... but I wanted my cake. So, she went back and got our cake and some extra plates. And here it is...

I liked, but did not love it. As you can see, there are no decorations from the GF gingerbread house like Pat discussed. The lights also weren't what I requested. I had asked for fondant, gumpaste or royal icing shaped like C9s and connected by dark green "wire" - i.e. piped or fondant. So, they just dabbed on little colors. The ears, on the other hand, were a pleasant surprise. I thought they were going to do the small ones, but clearly, these are the big ears like my sketch (they never saw it)...and they are white chocolate.

I also made sure to take a pic of the cut cake so you can see the red.

39245465732_49a4322cbc_c.jpg

Unlike our last cake, this one was just OK in the taste department as well. I don't think any of us finished our pieces. My parents at least got to take home the leftovers...and I got a green thumb from trying to cut the darn thing. LOL- I guess nobody ever took it out of the fridge to "rest" for a bit, so it was solid.

39245463882_584a0e7c23_c.jpg

As much as I love getting cakes for our trips, there's been enough frustration and disappointment in the process and our various orders over the last handful of years that I think I'm done. It also doesn't help that Amorette's puts the Disney bakeries to shame. While we got the Haunted Mansion cake above for Samantha for our 2016 trip, Amorette's did a domed Donald cake for Kendall's bday for that same 2016 trip. The ordering process was easy (much less frustrating that working with Disney), the service throughout the entire process was amazing, and it looked and tasted absolutely divine. I know they don't get as creative or customized and they don't deliver, but I think it's worth the trip to Disney Springs if you want a special cake. In case you're curious...this is the cake from Amorette's in 2016...

The cakes are even packed up in these adorable boxes...

28518433511_e6f6ea1733_c.jpg

I won't say that I'd never order another Disney cake, but my feelings on our 2017 Disney cake coupled with the inconsistency we've had as well as the hassles, I really think Amorette's is going to see more business from us in the future.

That's it for now. Coming up...leaving 'Ohana and the Poly and MK time with family. Thanks for following along. :)

Thanks! We absolutely loved it...definitely one of our fave Disney cakes.

Yeah...it's a very cute cake. I just wish she didn't get my hopes up with edible GF gingerbread decorations. I had all of these ridiculous plans of how I was going to try and keep everyone from eating them so I could keep them. :hilarious:

Dec 20th Continued...

Things were getting really quiet at 'Ohana. That's Mickey and Lilo leading the last little parade...that had next to nobody involved. Still, for all of the late ADRs, it's nice to see that they still keep the party going since ADR time shouldn't keep you from experiencing these things.

24411887777_5123df7456_c.jpg

My parents didn't want to be too late getting home, so we said our good-byes and they were on their way. What's funny is that I think all of these trips to the Poly to eat inspired my dad to finally stay here. I forget what resort they had booked, but they switched it to the Poly and stayed there for the first time a few weeks ago. I started getting all of these texts from my dad about how huge the rooms are. LOL They have at least stayed at a number of neat places since they often meet up with some of our family friends at WDW who are DVC. They got to stay in a tree house with them back in January...and I was soooooooooooooo jealous!

We decided to explore the Poly a bit more with my brother's family.

Yeah...apparently my nephew really likes tikis. While I got him a bunch of things...tiki lights and tsum tsums came out of these inspirations.

And my niece is ridiculously happy! Which is good! She's a bit younger than Sam was when we first took her into the parks, but she is so much more content to hang in the stroller and no major challenges of wills when we were around.

We decided to all go back to MK, since we haven't been in the parks with my niece and nephew. So, we headed to the monorail...

One of the kids also pointed out that we could see all of this all the time had I just met their surprise requests to book the Poly for our next stay. While I like the Poly, I'm not paying Christmas holiday rates for it...so this was just going to have to do this time around.

...and now we're back at MK.

A little spoiler...I forgot that the 3 o'clock parade was shifted to 2pm.

When we got there, we could see everyone was waiting on FoF. My brother didn't think his kids would handle it well, so we started to head into the park. Haunted Mansion was finally open and it's become one of my nephew's faves, so we were hoping to make it over there. With the crowds we decided to avoid the hub...

Kendall and Sam had never seen it and really wanted to since it was right there. My nephew was actually good with this since it was something Kendall wanted to do, but there were also some issues. While my nephew has a number of issues, some of those are muscular issues. So, my brother had to join the mix to help brace him so he could stay upright without issues. I don't know if he fully appreciated it like our kids did and we were pretty far back, but he was doing something Kendall wanted to do, so we were as good as can be.

It wasn't really the best set up for us and I could tell things weren't going to be good for long, so I asked Kendall if we could skip out after dragon time...

Kendall LOVES Maleficent, so I was really happy she was able to see this. Her 2016 bday cake (which may or may not have been posted on the Cake Talk thread) was Maleficent in dragon form. It's not my finest work, but considering she gave me just a few days notice and I was having to make whatever supplies on hand work...it's decent.

After steampunk Maleficent went by, Kendall suggested we do something else that was easier for my brother and nephew. My nephew's #1 overall fave is the Tiki Room and we were right there, so we went that way. A couple of years ago, I bought him a parrot that records sayings so it can talk. So, they recorded Jose singing from the Tiki Room on it and it opens its beak and flaps its wings. He loved it so much, they had to get a new one when it broke.

We had a minor issue when we got to the Tikir Room...the CM didn't see the stroller as a wheelchair tag and wanted us to park the stroller...but that was quickly remedied. I even got my nephew to model for me in front of his fave.

39274374131_d39dd49a71_c.jpg

I warned my brother that we had no pre-show earlier in the day, which wouldn't sit well with my nephew, but thankfully all went as it should.

I know I take a lot of pictures, but I took even more during this visit. Sometimes, when my parents are babysitting, they'll show my nephew pictures. They like to use mine since they can tell him that it's us or that he was there with us when it was taken.

Obviously, I didn't get to choose the bird we sat near this time, but that's ok. I like Pierre too!

We finished up and decided IASW might be good next as it's another one of my nephew's faves and my mom really wanted us to get to experience these things with him. As you can see from the pics, the crowds were getting pretty heavy...

Having never been with anyone who has a DAS pass, I didn't know how any of this works, but my brother said that while most will give you a pass to come back based on the current wait time. Then he noted IASW is usually pretty good about letting you right on. I was fine either way, but I guess good to know. We got there and sure enough, they led us in through the handicapped entrance.

As nice as it is to know there are things like this for my niece and nephew, it always prompts discussion between me and David about how we're grateful to not need this. Honestly, it actually made me tear up a bit during all of this, but as I was fighting back some tears, the clock went off.

I'm going to stop there for now. As some of you know, IASW is my favorite attraction and I went a little (a lot) overboard with pictures. So, I'll post more later or tomorrow. Thanks for following :)

Um, if that Maleficent cake you made was your work on short notice, I have GOT to see what your cakes look like when you have time to plan!

LOL :hilarious: I'll try not to spam this with too many cake pictures and I'll try and keep it Disney-ish, but when I'm given time to plan...I can devote more time to sculpting details and buy supplies that help with the presentation or ease of production. Still, it's just a hobby (my job has nothing to do with cake :grumpy:) and life comes up to always make me strapped for time, so I'm always a bit disappointed and it's never quite as clean as I'd like. Perfectionist issues!

This was Sam's Star Wars bday cake from 2016. I had weeks to work on this. So, "Wookiee the Chew" (a blend of Pooh and Chewbacca- concept borrowed from an artist) had lots of prep time. It wasn't until an issue at the tail end (Sam broke her wrist 2 days out) that I had to scramble on the end work of the Death Star (and some other details) and some things wound up being more sloppy than I'd like.

This was Kendall's 3rd bday cake. I had months to test products and try test shoes before doing this one...still, I had the bright idea of giving her a big wooden swingset playset for this bday and have us assemble it in secret the night before. So, I was trying to finish up the cake and a playset all in the same day. The back of the cake is a disaster. So, I photographed it from its best angles. LOL

In the case of Kendall's Toy Story Barbie car cake, the whole darn cake fell apart in transit. It was an insane week...car accident less than a week out from her 5th bday surprise road trip to WDW and I was just a mess. BUT- before things got crazy...I made what I still think are a decent alien and a decent Mr. Potato Head for said cake.

Your Maleficent cake is right up there with Disney’s cakes!!

Thank you! Of course, their pastry chefs know all kinds of techniques and such that sort of baffle me...but, at least I don't have their rules when making cakes. :)

Dec 20th Continued...

I don't know if this is a thing to ask riders to do this. I know I've never seen it before, but I thought it was funny. We tried to show my nephew how to chicken dance, but it was kind of lost on him.

So it's time to cruise. Samantha and David hate this ride, but for the rest of us, it was great. Speaking of, Samantha recently informed me that it's not just IASW...ALL...yes ALL audio animatronics freak her out. We went through a bunch of Disney attractions and apparently as much as she enjoys WDW, she if a bit leary of anything with AAs! And for those who have seen my past reports, you know this is my fave. So, I'm going to spam the heck you of you with pics. Not sure how many posts that this is going to take, but it's time to go along for the Happiest Cruise that Ever Sailed.
