I did notice that the yellow straps ("please pull on the yellow straps") already had a worn look to them, so it's possible those were recycled from the old ride.

Most of the cars I rode in looked to have new yellow straps. I did have one car with old ones.


What's the theme in the hot and cold rooms now?

The old environmental tests, now test efficiency. Bottom left is old heat test.

I rode 4 times and made 3 designs... It's amazing. Except for the track, it's pretty unrecognizable from the original. Inside it pretty much looks just like the concept art.

The screens worked today. They displayed info on each test.

The music was a computerized synth sound. Much better than the clanging and banging it use to be.

I also got a sneak peek at one of the post show exhibits where you can make a commercial featuring your design and e-mail it to yourself. Pretty awesome.

In a nutshell, it's the beat attraction at Epcot hands down and one of the best rides in all of property. WDI made me a believer again!

It shouldn't be too hard to look just like that concept art though? Darkened with neon transports well from the computer screen to real life. Can't wait to see it myself.

Good to read your raving review! I've had a good feeling about this redo, and from what you are saying, maybe my expectations will even be surpassed!

This is without question an improvement, IMO. I had this expectation of what it would be like in my head, and to be honest its basically exactly as I imagined. Visually, while it could still use some tweaking with light levels, maybe make it a little darker, maybe add a few more moving light effects (although its possible they just aren't working yet), it looks GREAT! Basically what used to be a big, empty floor aside from the environment chambers and barrier test is now visual eye candy from beginning to end.* The fact that it uses a lot of screens and projections does not bother me here as its all integrated very well. The sound design is superb. Music is spersed in several areas of the track, which seems to all be part of a larger musical theme. Electronic beeps, zaps, and such let you know that you're traveling through an electronic grid. The onboard narration, between the female computer voice, and the male narrator (which seems to be the same voice as the new monorail narrator), also sound great. Think Mission: Space's onboard sound effects and female computer voice. Only, instead of designed to be intense, the whole tone of the voices and music is calm and ... soothing?

The vehicle design stations were still not fully functioning and it was not uploading them to the actual ride, but we got a good idea of how your design affects the ride (not very much, but a worthwhile way at least). Designing your car is fun, quick, and easy, but has a surprising amount of options. The design process easily demonstrates how different design choices affect the four testing categories.

The vehicles travel the course at the exact same speeds in the exact same spots as before, but what you are doing in those sections is totally re-themed. The truck is still there, but re-designed and actually better incorporated than before.

It isn't "dumbed down" at all. Its all very sleek, smart, forward thinking, and in the true Epcot style. I would describe it as an avant-garde attraction almost - They don't seem to make a huge deal out of "yeah you're gonna be traveling through our NEW super high tech simulation computer!!" but instead you just do it and it looks like another dimension, like, "yeah, this is just a thing we do in the future, no biggie."

* and now for my two minor concerns.
1. The inside is actually so awesome and interesting that the high speed loop outside is a jarring transition. I know that enclosing that portion was not within the boundaries of this refurbishment, but I wonder if something else could have been added at least - maybe some walls/theming around the outside of the first turn (the backstage one) to block the backstage views, and some arches over the straightaways? More importantly, there was no audio at all in this portion, adding to the jarring dullness. Its still thrilling because of the speed and banked turns, but it feels incomplete. I feel that an upbeat, pumping techno mix of the theme heard throughout the attraction would work best here, as sort of a burst of nirvana from completing the other simulations and doing the "big" test.
2. If only standby will get the option to fully design their vehicles, only a small portion of riders (remember what the Fastpass ratio actually is!) will be participating.

But all in all, THIS is how a "re-imagining" SHOULD be done. and Star Tours II.

Here is a detailed review. I'll warn you that this post will contain SPOILERS BELOW. Also, all effects were not working because it was test & adjust.

QUEUE

The queue is far less industrial and much more like a car dealership showroom. Walking into the building is somewhat similar, but there is a glass window in addition to the doors entering the building now. The Fastpass and Single Rider queues are on the left and look to have a pretty direct route to the merge point. The Standby line enters in and passes a very futuristic silver sports car. This futuristic car is much more realistic to today's sports cars versus the silver future car that was previously shown at the exit of the attraction. You then curve around and pass an exploaded view of another concept car. This one reminded me of an even smaller yellow smart car. It was described as some sort of electrical circuit car. Think Peoplemover or Wall-E, but a personal car concept. The queue then curves into the former soundproof room. In there a screen plays a video about the design process and features kids describing very outlandish visual personalities for what their future dream car would look like. Meanwhile, different images are projected onto a blank white car model in front of the screen. Then you pass a very small hallway with screens that describe the type of features you have at your fingertips once in the design room. From there, you are split off into circle pods like Mission Space or Sum of all Thrills. You watch a short video on the design process and then you enter the design room. The design room is full of kiosks with large touchscreen monitors. You are given a specific time limit to design your car. I will go into detail of that later. The design rooms seem to be in the general area of where the old queue passed the airbags, infant crash test dummy, and the road signs. After you have designed you car, you continue through the queue to the merge point which is where the old merge point seemed to be. The queue then curves around and into the loading area. Imagine the holding areas outside the old preshow rooms continuing around the backside of the preshow rooms and around the other side. The entire queue features lots of blue and slate colors. It has similar characteristics to the Star Tours 2.0 queue or Sum of All Thrills as well. I feel like the indoor queue is much shorter than the old queue. That combined with the design room capacity leaves me wondering how long wait times will be. The music playing in the queue reminded me a lot of the calm soothing music that played in the car showcase room at the end of the attraction.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design process is all touchscreen. The screens are very large and easy to use. They also feature multiple languages. Each design station can be used for a group of up to three people. Your group will receive an RFID card to upload your car to. You will simply tap it to the large circular Test Track logo on design console. It is very similar to the Fastpass+ RFID readers. The first part of your design process is designing the shape of your car. From there you can modify your shape by optimizing it based on how you want it to perform in four given categories. After that you get to play around with different features like the color, wheels, spoilers, etc. The options allow for hundreds if not thousands of design possibilities. Some features increase performance or decrease performance. You also have a lot of power in the design process choosing from how big your front wheels and back wheels are. What features appear on the front, side, roof, and back of your car, etc. During this entire process, you are given a time limit which counts down as you work. Based on park attendance and demand, the time limit may vary, but even with the lowest amount, it allows you to play around with your design. While I felt eager to explore all the design options, I knew I couldn't try them all on in one sitting. I didn't necessarily feel rushed though. Overall, the design process was VERY VERY cool and just as fun as the ride if not the best part. Before the doors opened to send us on to the rest of the queue, people were taking a look around at other people's designs which really was very cool to me. In a way, I was connecting with other total strangers and riders. Fastpass and Single Rider will most likely not get to participate in the complete design process.

RIDE

The ride layout of course is exactly the same, but the overall experience is completely different. Yes, the concept art now makes sense and is very very accurate. It is also very Tron themed. There is a lot of use of computer graphics, black light effects, projections, lasers, and HD screens. The first incline up is more enclosed with walls on either side filled with projection and sound effects. At the top of the incline, you are welcomed and begin your first test. Here is where the block test was previously done, but now all blocks have been removed. You then proceed into a transition area where OnStar is uploaded onto your car for diagnostic readings or something to that effect. The next test is the former non-anti-lock brake test. Here is where you test weather/environment like rain and snow and where you skid out of control. The next test after the "reset" which is now an avalanche projection, you speed up to the turn featuring a lightning bolt. (See concept art). When you turn the corner you see a futuristic city model with lots of projection effects all over it and lightning in the background. Now you enter the former environmental chambers. The first one has a bunch of green scanning lights. (See concept art.) The next looks like some sort of aerodynamic wind test. Finally the last room is where you car is scanned before it does the handling curves. Once you exit the last room, your handling course is uploaded and some laser trees turn on. This is a very cool effect. Along the curves are some very glossy futuristic road signs, one in particular has a few nods like Bowtie Blvd, General Motorway, and Motion (something). The tunnel and simi are still there, but the simi has lasers projected on to it this time. I didn't see if FDR was still inside. The old Test Track spark effect (that never worked) did not return. Finally, you round the corner that was formerly the barrier test. Along the curve are all the logos from the different tests you have previously completed. The shoot off isn't super impressive, but some added "runway lights" that speed toward as you are moving are a nice effect. The outdoor course is unchanged with the exception of maybe some lighting changes at night. The speed sign wasn't working when I went on, so I"m not sure if it is or is not going to be used. Overall, the sound effects were very cool and computer sounding. There was narration with it, but I couldn't hear it very well with everything else going on. Occasionally along the way, you see how your design was doing and was ranked among all the riders in your car, but otherwise, you really don't do much with you design until the end when you can see how it did along the course. The car motion seemed somewhat smoother and even somewhat faster in some areas, but I think that was in my imagination. The "barrier test" scene was the only exception where it almost felt slower. The braking at the end was just as rough as the previous version. The ride has lots to stimulate riders with, but now isn't the main part of the attraction. In my opinion, the attraction is split up into 3 parts now: design mode, ride mode, and post show mode. Test Track 2.0 really stepped up the game with design mode and the post show mode to the point that the ride is less of the experience. You will now WANT to wait in line for this ride. (So long as the wait to design isn't 3 hours long.)

POST SHOW

As you exit, you follow the same hallway down to preview your on-ride photo. The Photopass scan/upload option is now gone, but there are kiosks set up to purchase and further preview your photo. Next you enter a room with a GIANT screen to see how your design scored. The projection features a track layout with dots representing cars traveling along it in real time. You simply take your RFID card up to the dozens of scanners to see your score. The projection also shows the top scoring cars designs of that day similar to Toy Story Midway Mania. The next room takes you into more interactive kiosks where you can put your car design in a commercial and even pick music to play in the video. This feature was currently not ready/not available.

OVERALL

I was VERY VERY impressed. Test Track 2.0 looks amazing. The visuals are amazing and definitely brings Test Track into the 21st century and is worthy of being in the section of the part called FUTURE World. My favorite part was the design process. I enjoyed it more than the ride. There are so many possibilities. I hope there will be a way to save your car designs and send them to your email address of something. I would love to compare my designs each time I visit. They really did an amazing job in the 6 months they had. Many of you will not even recognized the queue area, but will see some similarities in the ride. Now there were some hiccups when I visited, but those are expected during a test & adjust session. With the abundance of RFID, touchscreens, and projection technologies, there is bound to be some troubles here and there. I just hope the general public finds everything easy to use too. I am also worried about the durability of these screens and areas of the queue, but I'm sure they have those of those things already. December 6th will be New Fantasyland's day to shine, but the hidden hit will end up being Test Track 2.0 as the best new addition to the parks. Very good job WDI!

The speed sign was in a different location if I'm not mistaken. Odd that you had trouble hearing the narration - for me it was clear as day. In fact, the onboard speakers sounded more loud and clear than they ever did before. Maybe your car had onboard audio trouble?

A soothing female computer voice can be the difference between a mediocre attraction and an extraordinary one.

1) The queue has, believe it or not, 15% more capacity than TT1.

2) Correct. FP and Single Rider only have 30 seconds to create their vehicle. All they choose is a car design, color, and which attribute it should specialize in.

3) The runway lights are actually not new but since it's dark in there, it's a LOT more noticeable now.

4) Yes, the speed sign is exactly where it was before but is now digital. It hasn't been turned on yet though.

Would you agree with the other reviewers that the outdoor portion is now kind of a letdown compared with the rich visuals in the rest of the attraction?

I don't know whether I'd say that or not, but It's interesting how the tone of the attraction has changed so much that it's even a question. The previous version focused 99% on the track itself and not as much on the visual experience, so the part where the track was the most intense seemed for most to be the highlight of the ride. Because the ride now reads more as a visual/narrative experience, the outdoor track does stick out because it's only part which doesn't match the rest of the attraction visually or narratively. It's still fun of course, but it certainly seems a bit "naked", like this is the part of the attraction where it switches into the old version.

This is one of the things I found most impressive about the new version - that Imagineering is still capable of creating an attraction like this. The word I was thinking was "abstract." In an era of Imagineering where everything, from DVC carts to carousels to the props above cash registers, have elaborate backstories and "founders" and justifications for why they have to exist, here is an experience which is perfectly okay presenting itself only for what it is: a futuristic, somewhat trippy drive through the future. It doesn't fully explain itself, it doesn't quite make 100% sense, and the sense of wonderment that mystique creates works really well for it.

Oh, I actually meant that the female computer voice sounds cool, like Mission: Space's voice, and the male voice sounds calm and "soothing." Actually, the whole experience has a surprisingly relaxed, blissful feel to it.

Abstract! Thats what I was looking for. And definitely. Maybe I didn't see the full queue videos, or they weren't on, but the queue and design process didn't seem to give you any indication as to what the Sim track is or what it will look like. Guests with no prior knowledge will have no idea what to expect! The sudden transition from sleek auto showroom to trippy digital grid should surprise many people.

Theres still a lot of empty black space it seems. We don't have another Imagination space-wise do we? Or would you say it lends itself to the overall visual feel?

Honestly you don't notice as much because it's all in blacklight. They used a lot more of that space than they did before. Screens were added to most of the blank areas from the original.
