Taking Pics of Food/Meals

I don't think taking pictures of food is 'tacky' BUT I totally get what you mean: every time I go to snap a picture of my dinner I look around to see if anyone is watching and I get that feeling in my gut like I'm doing something wrong. My friends think I'm nuts when I come home with a camera full of pictures of the food I've eaten on my vacation. It's also a little crazy when you start to really think about it... the food you've just digested is going to live on forever, immortalized in this photograph you've just taken of it. But really, in a place as over the top and touristy as Disney World, why should you care what anyone thinks? You're just having a fun vacation.

HAHA I have never felt this way...who really cares who is watching...they are just jealous they did not think of this first!!!! Now the family gets upset that they cant start to eat..beause at Disney we are always hungry and ready to eat!!!

Interesting thread.

I take pictures of food all the time while at Disney, and yet, I still feel weird almost every time I do it. Like some others have posted, I feel like someone is watching me from across the room and judging me in some way. However, I haven't let it stop me from taking them.

That being said, we have reservations at Victoria and Albert's on our upcoming trip and I'm really torn with whether or not I'm going to take pictures. Initially, I was thinking there's no way I would take pictures there, it's just too classy a place. But on the other hand, I really want the pictures for my trip report and own personal enjoyment. I certainly wouldn't use flash, and I'd be subtle, but I still just don't know. So, I guess we'll see.

The only two places I felt uncomfortable taking food photos were Le Cellier and California Grill. Being that they are nicer establishments, it felt a little weird. But then I thought about the fact that there are so many pictures out there of Disney food, they probably see it all the time. The same on cruise ships. Tourists are supposed to take in everything on their time where they are, including what they have to eat. Who cares if for a second or two you are taking photos of food? With all the different ways of information out there-blogs, magazines, articles, etc.-who knows why you could be taking the pictures?

For V&A, I would agree. That's a tough call. However, my cast member friend enjoyed the Chef Table's experience and took photos the entire way through the meal. For most of us, it's a once in a lifetime experience. I say be subtle, and go for it.

When I went last June I started doing it..

It helps to show my gf who is trained to be a culinary chef what she could do at disney if she ever wanted to work there..

Oh, come now, is anyone really able to use the word "tacky" at a place where people wear these things? Take the pictures, you're on vacation.

How can ANYONE argue with that?

I'm a 25 year old woman, I wear sequined Minnie Mouse ears, and let my 8 year old run around all day in full pirate costume/makeup and then go to a nice dinner. I'm pretty sure we have passed the point of tacky, all the way into commitable, so really what difference does it make? Make him wear a pair of Mickey ears, and take his picture WITH his food. He won't say another word :D

LOL, I love all of your replies guys!! Normally I wouldn't be on the boards while at the parks, but I wanted to remember to bring this subject up!

We were at LeCellier a few nights back and I took a few pics.(I just do it quickly!) Then, I overheard a CM tell someone that a particular food was "the 3rd most photographed item in WDW..."so the point being that they are used to people taking pics of food.

And then last night at the Spirit of Aloha dinner show the couple next to us that we were chatting up saw me taking a pic of our food and the woman perked up and said, "Hey, that's a GREAT idea!" and then snapped a pic of their food...:drevil::sohappy::cool:

Anyway, TR coming up! Gotta go hit up DHS!! :sohappy:

my hubby was the same way the first time he went with us. a short few years later and he now, just sits there [like our poor puppies waiting for the command to eat] til i am done with the camera. :ROFLOL:

now i can't fool around with the camera, its a quick snap and be done with it, i will very rarely get a second chance. so some photos might be blurred, but they have to do.

like another poster said, snap away!

My wife and I always take pictures of our food. Yes sometimes we get funny looks from people around us, but when we explain that we post them on a Disney Lovers web site, they all seem to understand.

I Love all the pictures posted here with the exception of a few things:

1) Don't take really close-ups. I don't want to see the snotty-looking liquid of your undercooked scrambled eggs or the grease dripping from your 1/3lb Pecos Bill burger.:hurl:
2) If you forget to take a picture and take a bite out of your food, too late. I don't want to see a half eaten turkey leg. Please wait until the next time and try and remember to take a picture before you take a bite out of anything.
3)And finally... Always post WHERE you got the meal. Sometimes the pictures look so good I want to try them myself on my next trip so I need to know where they are from.

Thanks!
Scooter

All great points, Scooter. I'm especially with you on the second one. I have a major aversion to pics of food that someone has already started digging into. Plus, plating is part of the appeal, so I don't usually bother with buffet pictures either.

I always felt a little strange taking pictures of the food at Disney but they are great calorie free reminders of the meal. Now while on vacation other places if we are somewhere (even extremely fancy) I'll take a picture of the food. After all I'm paying for it, I should be able to admire it a little before I eat it. Now I'm glad I have those pictures because I can remember how great that food was. Plus wouldn't you think a chef would feel complimented that people would want to take a picture of their creation?

Being a chef myself, YES Chefs do take it as a big compliment!

i think taking pics of your food at your own table or taking pics of food on a buffet or at a counter are all fair game, especially in a tourist venue (and i grew up in orlando...we don't hold it against anyone, we just want you to keep spending money in florida please :animwink:). i don't see any difference in taking pics of your dinner as compared to taking pics of your kids on dumbo. the entire restaurant is all tourists and half the time are still in their park clothes even in the signature venues...click away. oh and yes i agree with previous posters: 1. please take before you eat half of it and 2. please say what it is and where it's from.

I always take pictures of my food at WDW. I don't know why but it is fun to have memories of how good the food looked and tasted.

My boyfriend definitely laughs/cringes when I take food pics "Ummm you do know that's just a turkey sandwich". :p

I still think it's fun and it helps to document the trip. I wish we had taken pictures of food back when I went to Disney as a kid. I know where we ate but I can't really remember what we ate 20 years ago... but I will know 20 years from now exactly what we ate during these recent trips :)

I'm kinda shy myself about taking pics of the food. Don't think about what others are thinking. You're on vacation just have fun and do what you want to. You're at your table doing it to your food so no big deal really. Plus it's fun if you scrap book on line to add the pics of the food/meal so when you look back you enjoy it. :>)
Just have fun!!!! :>) :sohappy::wave:

I LOVE taking "food " pictures! I love looking at "food " pictures. It's addicting, thus the name. That's one of the ways we decide what we're going to order when we look at the menus of the places we've made ADRs at, right Trickortreater(DD#2) ?
