To be fair, there was never science that supported restricting fully-outdoor dining. Even here in liberal Connecticut, you can still dine outdoors in the 20 degrees. The table has a candle to keep you warm, of course.

But Newsom claimed his COVID lockdowns were based off science and transparency?

Here in South OC, pretty much every business has been ignoring his orders for a while. Heck even Claim Jumper has been offering indoor dining for about a month now. I’m still not going to eat indoors for a while though.

Not to get too political but many people wondered if things would loosen up after the election. There certainly doesn’t appear to be any significant medical/science reason for this change.

The regional stay at home order being lifted was enacted in December and only meant to last three weeks. It was entirely meant to discourage people from mingling with members of outside households. It was extended in late December, and now is ending today.

With the removal of the stay at home order, Anaheim returns to the Purple Tier. Still a long way to go until Disneyland reopens.

The news is still encouraging, and election or not, time marches on. The holiday surge is starting to subside. Infection rates are going back down to a more manageable level, and vaccine rollout continues. I don't think it's political at all to think we were eventually going to best this thing. Just a matter of how long it was going to take.

How is that even possible?!?

The state website tonight still shows that the SoCal Region ICU capacity is still at 0.0% as of 1/20/21, where it has been stuck for weeks now. Although that 0.0% is the magical "Adjusted" number, and the actual Science & Data unadjusted number for OC is currently 9.2% (the unadjusted number for OC has been in the 9% to 10% range for the past month, but the magical "Adjusted" number is always 0.0% for ICU Capacity, which means the OC hospitals are performing appendectomies and delivering babies out in the parking lot).

To make all that go away, Governor Newsom must be going to do a major Song N' Dance Routine at his Noon presser and walk back all his previous Science & Data and declare the 0.0% Adjusted ICU Capacity for Socal Region to be A-Okay!

How could Newsom go back on his word like this? Has the Science changed, or did they find some surprise Data under someone's Sacramento desk over the weekend? Gosh... what could be going on in Sacramento that would cause such an about face by Governor Newsom on all that Science & Data?
Well, there are several lawsuits and the recall effort is really gaining momentum which has him very worried, so he is hoping to slow that down with this as all of California knew that outdoor dining wasn't a source of spread.

Of course he has couched this as things are tending in the right direction and the vaccinations are proceeding according to the article I just read, but apparently the state has confirmed the orders have been lifted:

I'm just not going to eat at Claim Jumper because of how poorly they treated their staff at the beginning of all of this mess.

Reports indicated that Newsom has a reservation at French Laundry tomorrow evening.

Enjoy eating at Disney California Adventure the Extenzed Downtown Disney District!
I think Disney will wait a bit before reopening the extended Downtown Disney dining, it might be a while before each of the individually run restaurants there do too, but I certainly could be wrong on both accounts.

The election was exactly 85 days ago.

There certainly doesn’t appear to be any significant medical/science reason for this change.

As expected the holiday surge is starting to die down.

"Over the past week, there has been an average of 170,559 cases per day, a decrease of 33 percent from the average two weeks earlier."

Seems an odd time to be lifting these restrictions if we ignore recent political events including the inauguration and all these other governors in the country suddenly doing bizarre about-faces. "We may now resume Outdoor Dining in freezing conditions!"

I mean, we're in the dead of Winter right now even in Southern California, where it's cold and crappy out, with reportedly 2 years worth of rain being dumped on the region over the course of this week. These are prime conditions for viruses to spread and people to get sick. What Science and Data is supporting the Shop At Target Order being lifted now?? I don't even support these mandates, but I have to ask. We are now in Respiratory Virus Season.

I honestly don’t think the Governor or his scientist have any idea what’s going on, or how to operate in covid 19 environment. Most of their decisions have done more damage from both the virus perspective and the economy. If the state followed the new business procedures that Universal and Disney have implemented, the state would be in far better shape.

Not at all. If you ignore all the crazy conspiracy stuff, and just look at the numbers, it makes sense:

If you're worried about the virus, then maybe you should enforce your own stay at home order.

Yep, I probably should have said inauguration but nonetheless, there were many people stating they felt changes would hit at some point after the election. I was one that said if it happened immediately, it would be suspect. It's fine that the surge has lessened as we hoped it would and I don't feel that opening up hair salons and restaurants for outdoor seating will cause another surge. I, like many, believe they are tied to holiday family gatherings.

We're still above the level where stay at home orders were implemented. The WHO just recently revised guidance on covid test sensitivity (I know, another big coincidence) to try to eliminate the high rate of false positives, so things aren't necessarily changing as dramatically as the data suggests... But every county is still going to be in the purple tier now, right? So this doesn't change a whole lot except for outdoor dining and a few other things.

It is amazing how things have changed since the 20th. The daily vaccine numbers basically doubled overnight. Blue politicians sure love vertical line graph jumps.
