Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opening reports and using Boarding Groups at Disneyland

Well, they called it a night. Like clockwork, Last Call was called at 8:30pm with Boarding Group 111.

Interesting tactic there at the end of the night they used, as the park emptied out a couple hours ago with windy, cold, damp weather and the Academy Awards on TV tonight. The decent crowds this afternoon in both parks have dwindled into nothing at 9pm, with 5 to 20 minute waits for almost all E Tickets....

Matterhorn, Submarines, Pirates, Splash Mt., Chase-A-Baby, Small World = 5 Minutes
Soarin', Guardians, Jungle Cruise, Star Tours, Space Mt., Thunder Mt. = 10 Minutes
Millennium Falcon = 15 Minutes (it's been stuck there for hours)
Indiana Jones = 20 Minutes
Radiator Springs Racers = 30 Minutes

So at Rise Before Dawn they started going nuts on calling Boarding Groups in the last 30 minutes before Last Call, probably realizing most everyone who got a Boarding Group 12 hours ago at 8am had already gone home and the no-show rate was very high and they could get as many people as possible in with a very aggressive tactic on Boarding Groups. Good for them for realizing that!

Overall, a pretty crummy day for this new ride. Disneyland was open from 8am to 11pm, for a 15 hour operating day.

Sunday 2/9: Ride Opens 9:05am, Last Boarding Group #111 Called 8:30pm, 8 Hours Closed, 7 Hours Opened

I'm still not convinced it wasn't just the App crashing and they had no other way to try and get people into the queue without creating a free-for-all stampede. But my first choice is that it was somehow rain related.

Looking at the data after I got home, I don't think it was the app.

I think we saw numerous issues today with the app, but I don't think it *caused* the downtime, but was more a symptom of the downtime.

BG 58 was called at 1:26:40, and the app (and signs) seemed to go to the "boarding has concluded" statement at exactly... 3:26:40.

So it seems like there is a default in the VQ system, where if all groups are called it resets everything to zero and displays the "boarding has concluded" statement on the signs around the land. You can see this as the queue drops to 0 start and 0 end, then they fix it about 10 minutes later at 3:37:16. They then reset the queue multiple times (each time adding additional return time, but it apparently didn't work the way they wanted it to).

This tells me multiple things about their boarding system though.

  1. It's fully automated to "close" when all groups have been called.
  2. The return time is set when the boarding group is first called.
  3. The return time is fully automated and basically an offset to the call time, and that offset time is stored.

It would be nice to get some confirmation, but today just seems very fishy. And it still ranks as the longest sustained breakdown the ride has had since it opened.

This is also the first day that Anaheim has had any rain since the ride opened January 17th. It's been sunny and dry day after day for the last three weeks, without a single drop of rain. And it's just a tad suspicious that today's record setting 4 hour long downtime happened about 30 minutes after the rain started.

In fact, except for 0.15 inches of rain that fell in the very early morning hours of January 17th, the previous rain that Anaheim got happened back on December 26th, 2019.

The second-worst breakdown was a 3 and a half hour long stretch on January 26th. January 19th also had a long breakdown, but it was actually broken into two sections when the ride reopened briefly for about 15 minutes before breaking down again. All the other days had multiple breakdowns, but they only lasted 60 to 90 minutes each.

But maybe there's some other reason totally unrelated to the sudden rainy weather? Ok, conspiracy theory for you...

One of the areas people beat Disney up on was the 'straight copying' of designs from DL to DHS... and pointing out that DHS's building was inadequately designed for the rain scenarios FL has.. and had to have a lot of revisions done after the building went up.

Given the rain amounts mentioned... is it possible they have leak issues or other standing water issues in DL that have popped up?

Wow I just had the same problem today. I was ready and kept refreshing right at 8. I got group 77.
Based on my experience in WDW, this can be a typical problem when having the app already open when the park opens. When I open the app from complete close right at the open time I get much better results.

I've always done fresh opens and it worked for me both times. I'm against using the refresh method.
I tried it one more time yesterday just for good measure since I had two other friends doing fresh open. I was still refreshing and going through all the clicks trying to get join group to appear and it never happened. My friend got us in group 27.

So to recap, the consensus is,

-Watch another clock tick down to 8AM EXACTLY
-INSTANTLY fresh open the Disneyland app.
-Click find out more
-Click join boarding group

Other points--
-only one person per group does this, and should have all the tickets
in the group linked to their app

And there is a good chance.

Correct?

My guess? That semi-outdoors disembarking area and exit can't handle moderate rain with a decent wind pushing water into it and the battery charging system shorted out? Or the roof sprung a leak?

If a bit of rain did cause the issue and it wasn't a leaky ceiling then they have a major problem. Imagine the issues they will be having when the rainy season hits Florida

This has worked for me pretty well. I'd also say find a spot where you're getting the best cell coverage and don't use the park WiFi. For some, that may mean going back out of the park once you've been scanned in (the App only tracks if the ticket has been scanned into Disneyland, and not geolocated inside the park).

Not sure how the group links exactly work over there, but there’s no harm in multiple people trying to get a group here if everyone is linked. If you’re a second behind someone else it’ll give you an error and say you’re already in a group.

Also a fun note, the clock app icon on iPhone shows the seconds. Move both the clock app and Disney app right next to each other so you know when it’ll hit the time.

Ride is down. I’m stuck in the line

That's a real bummer! The ride has been closed for two hours now, breaking down at 2:20pm. Did they give you a Fastpass to return later, or are you still waiting in the queue?

bokeh_plot (28).png

And that chart brings up another point that, yet again, the ride couldn't open on time this morning and was delayed until 9:00am.

Disneyland is open 8am to 11pm today, as part of the buildup to the much busier Presidents Day vacation week that starts this Friday. They'll be open 8am to Midnight all next week basically, then get a short reprieve of a few 9am to 9pm weekdays before Spring Break starts in three weeks and they begin daily 8am to Midnight operation for several weeks starting in early March.

That this ride is constantly opening late every morning, and then closes hours before the park closes each night, is not a good sign. Even with all that TLC and beauty rest each night, the thing breaks down for hours and hours each day. And a busy Spring Break in a booming economy is barreling towards them very fast.

It appears this ride was not quite ready for prime time. 🧐

Waiting to get evacuated. Hoping I get some type of return pass

View attachment 448196

That's where I sat, with an empty seat and then a nice couple in the other two seats! Enjoy the evacuation show!

And at least we now know that even though the Boarding Group graph has flatlined since 2:20pm, they tried to reopen. But with an evacuation now under way, it's safe to say it won't be officially reopening soon. Maybe an hour from now at best?

I did a fresh open, but not because I knew in advance that would improve my chances, just because I was feeling cocky after my finger warm-ups I had been doing on a very cold morning and I just felt that would be the best way to do it for whatever reason.

But it did work very well for me as I got Boarding Group 36.
