Star Wars Land announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

GMRs slow moving theaters just didn't cut it in the digital age. The current Indy show still entertains. LMA, like GMR, also did not hold up well. These are all important considerations.

So are you going to perpetuate the "LMA wasn't popular" meme? ;)

Popular by default maybe in a park with limited offerings. Not Disney's best effort. Perhaps Uni will create a Fast and Furious version if there is truly customer demand for it in Orlando. Hmmm.

Beats having the opposite problem. The parks are becoming more profitable and therefore more likely to see expansion. Perhaps we are entering a new era when adding to the parks is no longer cyclical.
They've HAD the opposite problem . . . the attraction lineup at Hollywood Studios has been dwindling in the last few years. That's why the park will be overcrowded once people show up for Star Wars. Lots of demand for the new product and not enough to keep people entertained in the meantime. The park is going to be a madhouse and management expects it will get ugly.

There is also such thing as a middle-ground, you know. They could have slowly but surely expanded the park over the last 2 decades and then added Star Wars Land in a bid for the brass ring. Then the park would have avoided the dismal days it's endured AND guests would have some other satisfying things to do while they wait for their entry window to Galaxy's Edge.

PS: If The Magic Kingdom is any indication, profitability does NOT automatically equal expansion. MK has been raking in the cash hand over fist for it's entire lifetime but hasn't seen a new E-Ticket added in 27 years - 29 by the time TRON opens. New Fantasyland, the only meaningful "expansion" to the park in that time (and even that is qualified) was a measure drawn not because the park was so profitable, but because capacity had been shrinking for years and they needed to recover that ground.

Too many guests had not enough places to go . . . kind of like . . . what's about to happen to Studios . . . if only they'd learned their own lesson.

Hindsight is 20/20. Let's see what happens in June. At least Disneyland will be able to claim the #1 theme park title back.

When Potter overwhelmed IoA management there was called brilliant and TDO a failure for letting the franchise get away. It does get confusing. In a fun way.

Anyone working on the project won’t say a word. Career suicide :p

Question though - if they did use this expansion pad, and knowing that it this point no matter when they decide to do, the land will be open by then, and I would think management will not want construction walls to take away from the experience for the first few years, making it very hard to use that expansion pad. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I think they will be stuck between a rock and a hard place with that expansion pad. They will want to build something, but won't want to build it while the crowds are so heavy (as it would take away from the newly created area).

This is sorta my question as well. Does @marni1971 or anyone else know if there are even plans to use the expansion plans for SW in the near future? The park needs a lot more certainly and adding other experiences to SW:GE could be part of that.

But where are they in the process? Do they have potential additions already developed and awaiting approval? Would they be scrambling to develop something if the powers that be want an expansion? It's tough to father, as mentioned above, that they'd want to have construction walls up any time soon and ruin the pristine views in the land -- but if they wait years to expand and have their typical ~3 year build time (maybe worse considering it would be a non-easily accessible area during the day) well that's years down the road.

You've got to think that they know they need more stuff now. Do they have plans for it?

This Star Wars Land thing is the perfect example of darned if you do, darned if you don't.

At Disneyland, you've got a theme park that has the most rides of any Disney theme park in the world. Heck, Disneyland Park has as many rides as Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot combined. And 100 yards to the south, a 2 minute walk from Main Street USA, is another theme park (DCA) that has two dozen additional rides. Put together in one compact, walkable complex and that's as many rides as all four WDW parks combined, which technically makes it the most prepared to host a huge number of customers. And yet it's widely acknowledged (even by Bob Iger) that the addition of Star Wars Land will bring the Disneyland Resort to its knees.

But then at DHS, you've got a theme park with the fewest rides of any Disney theme park in the world, even after another new "land" opened in 2018 (Toy Story) and an additional E Ticket opens a few months before Star Wars (Mickey's Railway). And they are building a huge new parking complex, a new gondola system, and a massive bus depot to get millions more people to/from that park once Star Wars opens. And yet it's widely acknowledged that the addition of Star Wars Land will bring DHS beyond its operational capacity (in other words, UGLY!), and the opening of Star Wars at dear, sweet, little DHS will have resortwide impacts across the entire WDW property.

The two individual parks that Star Wars Land is opening at in 2019 couldn't be more different from a capacity and operational standpoint, and the two overall Resorts are just as different.

And yet the results appear to be the same once Star Wars Land opens; pandemonium, massive crowds, and chaos. Sucks to be them.

This entire discussion is fascinating. I have to say, for me, I'm interested to see it all play out. I don't imagine myself even setting foot in either SWL for 1-2 years....and possibly not going on a ride there for even longer.

Define near future.

SWGE expansion will not happen before any of the confirmed projects at any WDW park are completed. You're probably looking at 2024 at the absolute earliest.

Last year for the Marathon Weekend, we tried getting Fastpasses for the Pandora attractions 58 days out and they were already sold out. We tried walking through and ended up turning around because the whole land was so crowded. I can't even imagine what SWGE is going to be like. How long are we going to have to wait to be able to really enjoy & appreciate it?
