It's not for the rides.
Hi @marni1971! Thank you so much for clarifying this for me! I can't wait for you to share more details, soon!

I read all of Marni's posts in the voice of a frustrated dad that has already tried to explain how planes fly 4 different times to his kids but they just aren't listening...."They fly because they can, now shut up and be quiet"
I know you're just joking -- but, Marni is not like this, at all.

Maybe they're building a giant Stay Puft man
Hi @yeti! LOL. You are just so hilarious! I didn't know who the Stay Puft man was until I googled it -- and, it's the Marshmallow Man!
Then I saw this story about a woman who just bought a Stay Puft man from Lowes to put in her living room for Halloween. And, she didn't know he was going to be that big. He took up like her entire living room. LOL!!! I just had to share this with you that because I was in tears laughing at this.

Okay, lets get back on topic!

I wonder why Disney chose to go through creating and patenting a technology like this, but never actually chose to use it. I think the only time they used it was for the New Fantasyland opening with the dragon right?

Imagineers come up with a lot of ideas, sometimes I am sure the idea looks promising enough to patent it to prevent other parks from using it, or to possibly license it in the future.

Disney recently filed a couple of patents for drones. And, it is believed that it is for Star Wars Land.

Disney filed a patent that reveals a puppet drone that can fire explosives, drop confetti and shoot lasers.

So, I can imagine guests on a Star Wars ride with these puppet drones flying above, shooting lasers and whatnot at guests in a battle scene or something like that.

ETA: Or, it could be for a parade or show. But, I hope this tech can be used for the rides.
looks cool but i'm guessing the puppet drones would be actually controlling a giant puppet, not actually being the centerpiece themselves

@RSoxNo1 Have you heard anything or has Jedi Training been confirmed for SWL? Members just listed some patents that could be used for the land. Any thoughts?
There were old rumors of a yoda AA and the show moving indoors. I would think those rumors were part of the first, failed proposal. The show doesn't need much to operate though so I would be surprised if it wasn't part of the new land.

I cannot tell you all how excited I am about the possibility of Live drones at Disney firing at the guests!!! My favorite all time WDW exchange was two ladies in front of me at PoC, exclaiming over the cannonball scene..."Did that hit you?"..."It went right past my face!" We still laugh to the point of tears at Disney firing live cannonballs into the guests boats!!! Can't wait for lasers, the technology to fight it off with my light saber would be so cool! Better practice my moves!! :)

Disney can fire all the drones they want, but it won't solve the problems beneath the surface.
