Why couldn't we have a star tours similar ride except that vehicle is mounted to a rollercoaster track?if the video in the ride spins to evade an enemy,so does the actual vehicle you are in?so basically what IM trying to say is,mount a smaller star toursesque vehicle to a huge rollercoaster track and voila, bobs your uncle! There is already a park in Germany that uses VR headsets on one of there rollercoasters, and supposedly the results are amazing!

The VR Coaster is an interesting demonstration, but it is not really a variable system. Any video must perfectly match up with the existing roller coaster track otherwise people will become motion sick.

Isn't it a waste of actually being on a physical track anyway?
How is that any different from other tracked rides that rely heavily on screens? It definitely has some potential to offer different experiences but the big hurdle will be the need for very high quality production, and as anyone walking around IAAPA this will can tell you that is not exactly something a lot of parks are willing to buy.

Because you're experiencing a full physical environment around you. Not having a helmet on your head and your view obscured.
Have you tried the Oculus or any of these new headsets? Views are not obscured and they're definitely a surreal experience (for now at least).

One of the earlier rumors for Nintendo Land at Universal was a Mario Kart dark ride with a windshield or dome providing projection-based show scenes. Not exactly a headset, but a similar concept where you're on a track but the scenery/characters are all projected around your head.

Incidentally (and at the risk of veering way offtopic), i'm of the opinion of not liking that idea at all. Newer rumors for Mario Kart indicate that this isn't happening and it may be more of a physical scenery type of ride. Maybe...

How about rides with practical effects and screen usage limited to environmental enhancements, instead of something we can experience in our cars wearing an oculus?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Does not the fact you're wearing a headset obscure the real world view?
In a theme park there are no 'real world' views. They're all constructed stages, why should the medium of construction matter?

Because you can't do the same with a car and Oculus Rift. The reason a coaster or other ride system is used is because such quick virtual movements without physical movement results in a lot of motion sickness. Similarly, trying to do something similar in a car would make people sick because the movement of the car and the video would not be syncronized, and virtual reality needs to be very tightly synchronized.

It matters greatly.

So the headset does fully obscure the persons real view and presents a purely CG view?
It doesn't have to be purely animated. Live action footage can be used as well. It's a media visual that defines the experience, just like any number of simulators and media-heavy hybrids out there. Down the line augmented reality (virtual media interacting with a live image of the physical surroundings) would also be a very real possibility.

technical sounds good, operational wise? a nightmare.
how many VR headsets would you buy? you will also need a system to fit them correctly on a wide variety of people, also the health issues.. you will have to find a way to have either the VR heads cleaned and disinfected correctly... OR a disposable part.

and has lee said, its silly to have a track when your view will be pretty much obscured completely by the headset.
the track could be easily replaceable by a set of fans and a system similar to star tours.. or a kuka arm for the fanboys in here..

Mack has already started to figure all of those things out. One can go do this right now at Europa-Park and Cedar Fair will soon be trying it out.

In terms of Star Wars, it really would have been great for the oft talked about speeder bike coaster. Instead of most people seeing a bunch of other riders' backs, everyone would have a front row view. There would be no track seen, you'd actually look like you're hovering. Trees, obstacles and Scout Troopers could look like they were right up next to you instead of several feet away outside the safety envelope.

It could also be done with an oversize non-contact helmet like the ones from DAQRI as a dark ride.
