Star Trek

Just got back from seeing it at the DTD AMC. I was blown away. Amazing job, J.J. Abrams! :sohappy:

Just one minor quibble: why on earth are there barcode scanners sticking out of the top of the helm? At first, I couldn't place why the glowing red thingies on top of the helm looked so familiar, then I realized that I use them every day to check in my costumes.

Just got back from the theatre.

My Star Trek knowledge is limited to all the times I've looked over my shoulder from the computer when Dad was watching some of the episodes and most of the movies.

Throw that limited knowledge out the window, 'cause sweet zombie Jesus that was awesome. I thought Nimoy would have a sort of cheesy forced cameo, but the writers really worked him in well. The SFX were very well-executed. Zachary Quinto is already one of my favourite actors, and his performance certainly upheld that. And the end... the last 30 seconds or so... wow. Fantastically done, guys. :sohappy:

P.S. I knew that Abrams and Lindelof collaborated on both this and LOST... so I judged the music and ended up being right. As the credits rolled, Michael Giacchino's name popped up!

Yeah, he also did the "Roar! Overture" for the Cloverfield end credits which is another Abrams film. Speaking of the music, did anyone else love the new orchestration of the original TV show theme during the credits? That was awesome! :D

Yep. Sounded great.
And speaking of Cloverfield...I caught the use of "Slusho" in Star Trek, when Uhura is ordering drinks.

I feel that Lost is a seriously overrated popular television show lacking a real story that means anything of value. Cloverfield is one of the worst films to come out in the last twenty years, and I do not take statement lightly. (Wearing Tom Servo shirt for Pete's Sake...), so here is what I have to say about "Star Trek"...

OH MY SWEET GOODNESS THAT WAS AMAZING! Just PERFECT. It's absolute proof of my long claim that you can give us the original goodness: The sounds, The costumes, The characters, and it WON'T BE CHEEZY. And it wasn't! It was perfect! Beyond perfect! The story was fine, and best of all the actors and the characters. I love the original Trek characters, and every moment was a real treat. Simon Pegg was so good as Scotty! Best of all, Bones! Every single one of his lines and acting was better than amazing!

Must go see it again.

Too many things done perfectly to talk about.

Sooooo...Abrams, I give you this candy bar.

You...You've earned it.

One thing I found refreshing about it is that its the first time in a long time that the future has been presented as colorful and optomistic rather than dark and apocalyptic.

Ditto on the acting. It could have just been a bunch of young stars, but the roles were very well cast! I could actually believe that they were younger versions of the original actors!

Noticed this also. I loved the use of lighting, especially for the Earth scenes. The only other two movies I can think of off-hand where the future doesn't suck for humanity are BTTF II and Meet the Robinsons. :)

The part I have highlighted I fully agree with. Out of all the casting he was the biggest one I feared in the role he got.I felt Quinto was the perfect Spock,Pegg was cast outstandingly for Scotty but Karl Urban as Bones??? I didn't think it would work..............until I saw it and Oh my was he wonderful in this role.I think in alot ways he was my favorite character in the movie.

Roger Ebert how dare you rate this movie C+ :fork:

As being someone who has never watched a single episode of Star Trek and never seen the movies I have to say I was very impressed. The acting and story-line were amazingly done and the visuals blew me away. After that big mess of Wolverine it's nice to see a prequel that doesn't fail and not live up to it's full potential. Everybody else I was with really came out impressed by the movie.

I agree! I had seen some episodes of The Next Generation but that's about it; I think I fell asleep in one of the movies as a kid so I wasn't sure what to think when I heard about this movie. I was surprised by how excited I was about it and even more surprised by how much I loved it! I was just impressed with it, period. I wouldn't have minded a bit more with Nero but it wasn't something that detracted from the experience.

I have to admit though... I was highly amused that while I was waiting to go in the theater, someone told me it was ok to go in and sit down. For Hannah Montana. :fork: Apparently twenty something females in dresses aren't supposed to see Star Trek?

Saw it on IMAX on Thursday evening and I freaking loved it. This movie just hit the reset button on the Star Trek franchise. I can not tell you how glad I am that I will not have to listen to cannon and continuity freaks go on about minor details.
