Star Trek

Saw it on IMAX on Thursday evening and I freaking loved it. This movie just hit the reset button on the Star Trek franchise. I can not tell you how glad I am that I will not have to listen to cannon and continuity freaks go on about minor details.

Not going to lie... I've headed over to IMDb a couple of times to see the little squabbles people are coming up with. It's amusing over there but I'm glad we all seem to be in agreement on this forum :)

I just love how JJ Abrams essentially erased pretty much every bit of Star Trek history save for the enterprise series in the first 5 minutes of the movie. This will be the first time that Star Trek has had a clean canvas to work with since the original series.

Oh I completely agree! It's nice to have the original characters working with a clean slate. People were complaining about how the scene was handled where Kirk cheats the simulator; I saw it as a great bit of character development while being a throwback to the original Star Trek.

I have to say that it's not really a clean slate, I see of it more of a return to original Star Trek cannon by going back to the beginnings and what made Star Trek great. I don't see it as "Ew, throw all that out" at all, in fact most of what made this movie great was there at the beginning of Trek.

Saw it again today. That's a real feat for it, not many movies do I rush out THE NEXT DAY to see. Usually a one day buffer.

Have I mentioned the music is awesome to the max yet?

I actually want to see this again now, something which I don't bestow upon many movies.

Someone care to explain which part of the movie tied in to the continuity (or at least references to events) of the original series/films?

As an origianl Series fan, i can probably answer that...but I need you to be a bit more clear becasue I don't think I understand.

And again, as a big time Original Series fan, I went into this movie thinking I was going to like it a lot. Well...I FREAKIN' LOVED IT!!!!:D:D

The bridge of the Enterprise was a little too...oh, I don't know, maybe a little too distracting to me, but I got used to it.

I gotta tell you though, I liked all the nods to the show and other movies. Things I saw were Kirk swinging the bottle of Saurian brandy in the bar fight...the tribble on Scotty's desk while on Delta Vega...Archer's beagle reference...a Cardassian Sunrise...how Pike looked and what he was sitting in at the end...got to see a "red shirt" buy it...Centaurian slugs...a sultry Orion female (hubba hubba).

Anyway...good movie, good plot, and a great way to reboot the series. Things do not have to be super different, and they shouldn't be. But they sure can change things up a bit and give a thing here or there a kick start. I have no problem with that at all.

Agreed!

Now I have to see it again because I never noticed the Tribble!

I saw it opening night at 11:30 and again yesterday with my parents for Mothers Day. I LOVED it...along with the men.... *cough*.... but all in all I thought it was a great action movie and it is one I can watch over and over again w/o getting bored (but then again, it doesn't take much to amuse me :))

Me neither and I even read about it being there! I knew nothing about TOS except the tribbles because I study tribology and my former co-workers thought I meant tribbles  Naturally they felt compelled to show me that episode and I missed it in the movie!

Good movie, but Wrath of Khan is still better:lookaroun

I agree, but I did like the fact that when Chief Engineer Olson (Greg Ellis) parachuted down to the drilling platform, it looked like he was wearing a red shirt. I don't think I have to explain the significance of that to any Treker.

Some are complaining, however I agree with you, i'm glad to see a new energy injected into a stalled franchise. I'm hoping it will bring a new TV series.

It felt more like Star Wars than Star Trek (not that there's anything wrong with that), then I found this little tidbit over on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUUhTgWpjSc

That youtube clip is pure genius. To be fair even GL openly admits that Star Wars is by no means an original plot. It is a formula that has worked over and over again.

I'm a Star Trek fan, but not a diehard. This movie ranks right up with Star Trek 2 (Wrath o' Khan) and 4 (the funny one with the whales) for best Star Trek movie. It's easily the most accessible to non-Trek fans; it's a great action-adventure movie that holds up without knowing the back story.

It's extremely well cast and a lot of fun. I suspect we'll be seeing this crew in a few more sequels.

Star Trek has never been my favorite franchise but I love first contact and the voyage home. I saw the new one and it was AWESOME! I think I see a formula in my Trek tastes.

Star Trek + time travel = I like it.

I think George Lucas could learn a few things about how to make a prequel from this movie. I thought the casting was great, the story was good and I love how they gave themselves a license to do what ever they want in the next films.
