I really don’t think we can separate out a “theme park perspective” from “some sort of social or political angle” for this. Those are tied together.
True. This is a unique situation where a major attraction was unfortunately based off of the ONE movie that could cause future troubles for it. If it had been based on The Rescuers, Robin Hood or—heck—the wonderful Paul Bunyan short, things would be different.

….However I have a feeling once the ride closes it will get worse. Then when Tiana opens the vitriol from the theme park community will get an adrenaline shot. Kind of depressing
I actually believe all this emotional outcry will begin to slowly fade away starting tomorrow. Nothing lasts forever, especially anything theme park-related. When the rethemed mountain opens, everyone will excitedly line up to ride it. If the new version is great, there’ll be much happiness. If not, it’ll be a Frozen Ever After situation where diehard fans grumble—because that’s what diehard fans do—and the GP keeps lining up for it and enjoying it for what it is. The Big Drop will still be there.

I’m afraid the defenders of the retheme will never acknowledge if it does turn out subpar, just as those opposed to this change will be reluctant to acknowledge if it is well done.
Exactly. Which is why the debate, while interesting and provocative, will prove to be pointless. It is what it is.

Whatever your view on this move, it's happening and I don't see the point in people with no control over the situation insulting each other over it. I guess, though, this is the way of the Internet.

We'll see how this turns out, but I struggle to see it being even in the top five dumbest things Disney has done even if the ride falls short of expectations. If it is poorly received, the ride system will at least be intact and they can work on improving the sets and storyline. It's not a Journey Into Imagination situation where they created a dud of ride that chopped up the attraction, almost eradicated the mascot of the entire park, and then couldn't think of a better solution than shoving a bunch of Figment AAs back in the ride and keep marketing him for several decades (and counting) as though the old ride was still there.

When you look at recent replacements, you have scratch your head and wonder why not expand and update instead of replace.
From a greedy business perspective, it's probably easier to replace since there's an existing since infrastructure is already there. I really hope this perspective soon though; it feels like Disney World is becoming more popular/crowded & what's in the parks can't keep up. Maybe there'd be better ride maintenance if closing one ride for a couple months wouldn't destroy wait times everywhere else.

I think Great Movie Ride might be their biggest recent blunder. I imagine the largest factor in its closure is that Disney didn't want to pay for licenses anymore. If they waited just a bit longer, they could've replaced all the movies they didn't own with Fox stuff. The Sound of Music, Planet of the Apes, Titanic, Independence Day, etc... It writes itself.

Splash is a better attraction than Great Movie Ride IMO. But I at least understand why this is happening, sadly.

I think the problem most are having with this and I’m going to watch my words carefully here but splash mountain was a very popular attraction so to close it for 2 years to do a rip and re-theme was not something needed, especially when more attractions need to be built, but it was decided on by Disney for other reasons, some of which falls in line with other things Disney has done in the recent years which some would argue has been unnecessary and causes controversy for the company.

I’m going to assume no one has any issue with a Princess and the Frog/Tiana themed attraction, they could make something fun from that movie for sure, it’s the decision to replace splash mountain in general with it, it being closed for so long, and why that is causing the backlash.

I got the solution. Just keep Magic Kingdom as is for all times. No updates, just keep everything old and tired and worn out. We'll call it Magic Kingdom, Stuck in the 80s. I could use a dose of If You Had Wings once in a while (retheme Buzz now).
Build a new one that will grow, update, change with the times. We'll call it New Magic Kingdom, because things change. Problem solved. Get on it Iger. You got 2 years.

It’s bigger than all of those things combined because you can make a reasonable argument that it is top 5 all time themed attraction in the most important theme park on earth.
Theme parks aren’t important, and most of the world population couldn’t care less about any of this. We are a tiny, tiny group of theme park enthusiasts. Disney parks, for all we know, might not even still exist in 50 years.

Oh, believe me, if it turns out subpar, you will hear this retheme “defender” point out everything that stinks. People do not fall neatly into pigeonhole A or pigeonhole B, and I can simultaneously understand why Splash needs a retheme, miss the original Splash, look forward to Tiana’s Adventure, be disappointed that certain great elements of PatF probably won’t be used, AND be ready to either praise and/or criticize the end product.

I think this is a salient point. I do think the other issues come into play to an extent, but if I’m not mistaken other rides that had been reskinned had long lost their popularity. Splash was still one of the most popular rides at the time this decision was made.
