Theres a good chance that this is not true but I heard that next summer spiderman 3 and pirates of the caribbean 3 will open on the same next weekend. Now if this true pirates would not have a huge opening like dead mans chest did because of all the computer geeks who want to see spiderman over pirates. Anyone know if this is true or not???

They won't open on the same weekend. Spiderman opens sometime around the beginning of May, while Pirates opens on Memorial day. Spidy should have little to no effect on Pirates since it would have already been out for a while.

Neither movie studio would risk profit by opening its big blockbuster sequel against the other. With rising ticket prices and people going to the movies generally less often, each studio would lost a nice profit that consists of people that will either go to a movie the weekend it opens or just wait for it on television.

Hey I don't consider myself a Computer Geek, I know pretty much nothing about computers, but based on Pirates 2, I would much rather see Spidey. I thought the first pirates was MUCH better, and the second one was just confusing and hard to follw. Besides, I Love comicbooks!!!

I agree, the first POTC was far superior to the second, but I don't think that the second was bad, or confusing for that matter (I did end up seeing it twice, maybe that helped). Either way, I'll be sure to see both Spiderman 3 and POTC 3 on their respective opening weekends. Hopefully they won't disappoint.

Yeah it definitely won't happen

and I gotta say... POTC 3 will absolutely blow Spidey 3 out of the water anyway... Spidey 3 won't come anywhere near a record... probably open around like... 80-90 mil; and you gotta figure POTC 3 has great potential to beat its previous record...

Now I do like the POTC series better anyways, but that's not why I'm making that statement, not based off of personal opinion... but, if you've seen POTC 2... you know why it has a chance to beat the record it just set... I don't wanna say ANYTHING at all because... well for those out there that haven't seen it... it'd be a spoiler... but it's got much more potential to open BIG over Spidey...

but either way... no way they'd ever open on same weekend

I don't know how you can say that POTC 3 will blow Spiderman out of the water. I suspect that Spiderman 3 will challenge POTC 2 for the opening weekend record, and that POTC 3 will most likely be that new record.

I have to agree with you there. The Spiderman franchise is one of the top selling franchises of all time! I think it will challenge the record too, but not break it, because even after Spidy comes out, then it will be Shrek 3 which will provide some serious competition. Then the week after, it will be POTC3. I'm not sure if POTC3 will break any records held by DMC, but its possible it could after that big cliff hanger.

I think that Spiderman 3 will have the bigger opening. First, it has been longer between Spiderman sequels than it has between POTC sequels, so most people, even if they didn't like Spiderman 2, are willing to give it another chance. Second, I think the multitude of cliffhangers in POTC, along with a rather unsatisfying ending imo, will push people away from the 3rd POTC, especially since the 2nd one is so fresh in their minds, similar to how Matrix Reloaded cause Matrix Revolutions to fail, but to a much lesser degree, as I in no way believe that the 3rd POTC will even remotely fail, just instead lose the ticket battle to Spiderman 3.

I think Spider-Man will take the opening weekend record again...they will open it in more than the 4100 theatres or whatever that DMC opened in and they will retake the record. The real trick is not how much Spider-Man will affect POTC3, but how much both Spider-Man and Shrek 3 will affect POTC3.

As much as I dislike Shrek, it does hold the highest grossing animated feature record and, for some reason, is adored by millions of people. I personally didn't like the first, didn't care for what I saw of the second, but do believe that the third installment will do better than most people, especially here, would like to think. It will do better than any of the Pixar/Disney or just Disney cartoon features that have been put out in the past 2 years...it'll even beat out the $260 million or whatever that the Incredibles made (note: did not look up info on the gross of the Incredibles - just going off the last number I think I heard)

The competition will be much stiffer for POTC3 next summer than it was this summer and that will definitely take it's toll on how much money it generates not only on it's opening weekend, but during it's entire run in the theatres. This can also be applied to Spider-Man and Shrek, but I see Shrek walking off with the summer....it's very kid-friendly (nothing scary, etc....except for the animation...blah), whereas Spidey and POTC have creatures and villians that will cause issues for smaller children.

Besides...kids love ogres that fart and burp......sigh

Spiderman 2 has the top opening weekend record right?

I love Shrek! I dont even know why! :)

I'm a cool person , and I prefer Spidey to PotC. BUT, I like both!

Although I don't know one way or t'other, there is a possibility that POTC3 & SM3 are currently "Penciled" in for the same weekend.

It's what the sophisticated folks in Hollywoodland call "a pi$sing contest." Sooner or later, based on anything-preview scores, a need to delay opening to finish graphics or just plain old "blinking"-one studio or another invariably moves its tentpole project out of the way of its competitor. So it's very possible that both movies are scheduled to open the same weekend, but that doesn't mean it's written in stone.

edit: I started writing before knowing Dr. Teeth did the cyber legwork & discovered the answers.

Yes, so I guess we can confirm it that Pirates will NOT be opening on the same weekend as Spidey. Because that would be box office suicide.

What are you talking about? Haven't seen the countless threads entitled Pirates Breaks Box Office Records?

Also, IMO: Shrek is not funny.

first off, im a huge pirates fan. i liked the first better than the second. im a big spiderman fan and i liked the second better than the first. i also enjoyed shrek, the first better than the second. the second shrek felt unecessary and too forced and i would imagine the third will be even more so. the 3rd spiderman is going to be huge for spiderman fans... i mean VENOM is in it! huge. anyway, im wary of potc3 for the simple fact im afraid of how they are going to end it. the matrix sequels sucked because everyone walked out of them thinking the same thing: what the hell just happened? they made potc2 a lot more complicated than the first and now has to do some serious loose-end tying. now, i dont know if anyone else saw this, but i saw a leaked partial script for potc3 the other day. yes, i know, dont beleive everything you find on the internet, but supposedly it was an actual script at one point, but supposedly has gone through many changes since it was written. and all i gotta say is, i sure hope so, cause for the most part, what i read sucked.

so while all 3 of these movies will have big followings, i dont think think they will break the record set by potc2. i think spiderman3 will beat spiderman2's opening weekend, potc3 will be bigger than potc1 but not quite as big as potc2 and shrek will be less thank shrek2 but still greater than shrek1. just my opinion though, im not an analyst...
