Spiderman vs. Jack Sparrow

Movie buff actually, love reading entertainment news, lol. Well, Return of the Jedi...can't say much on that one cause I actually don't remember it all too well (last time I saw it was when i was 7, lol). BUT, Episode III...THAT one is a LOT more popular and got more people to see it, just like the same equation I'm going to think with SM3. Why? They wanted to see the answer and prime and ONLY reason the prequels for Star Wars as done: to see how an awesome 8 year old genius in Episode I went to a power-loving, anger-driven, suit-encased Darth Vader. Well, it's mostly the same deal here, except this time, it's to see what the meaning of the trailer is "The greatest battle lies within", and also being the black suit and, like every other franchise I've seen so far while I'm alive, I've seen that mostly everyone, if they go to the 1st, and don't see the 2nd, or see the 2nd they would want to see the 3rd, to see how everything ends up and gets resolved.

By the ending, well, it was a great ending, and not so much action ending (used those words cause I didn't know how to describe it til now), but it left me wanting a lot more and left the door straight and wide open with not one, but SEVERAL storylines that happens in the 3rd. And to just finish this up, I agree how many people could get turned off by Tobey McGuire, but, that's the main difference between Pirates and SM: SM's lead is more dramatic, while having funny moment, while Pirates' Captain Jack is the opposite, and what do people like more? People prefer comedy more than drama.

I should probably watch SM 2 again... I don't really remember the ending that well, I mean I remember how he defeated Doc Oc... but I don't remember anything significant, so I'll have to see it again. And yes, certainly if someone saw the first and second of a movie, yes they will see the third, my point was just... second POTC leads you want to see the 3rd more than the second SM leads you to want to see 3rd of THAT series. Also... SM1 went from 114 mil to 88 mil, as I said above... the 3rd will do better. but clearly... people just didn't see a rush to see the second... whereas POTC did 40 mil... and then POTC 2 did almost 100 mil more... A HUNDRED MIL MORE... I mean... for a movie to do 100 mil would put them in the top (i wanna say 5, maybe 6 though) 5 or 6 of the all time opening weekend... 100 mil opener would be top 5 or 6... to do 40 mil... place 77th, AND THEN put 100 mil ON TOP of that... I mean that is ABSURD... And the first one ENDED... there was a problem, and a resolution... well in the second, it's like... "OH MY GOD... FANTASTIC MOVIE... BUT... BUT... BUT... WHERE ARE THEY GONNA GO WITH THIS?!?!?!" and then you gotta find that out... which I just PERSONALLY... strictly personal feelings... I feel that outweighs a movie that had a resolution but that leaves a "what might such and such mean" for you to think about.

Also... the fan base for Depp is like 1000x that for Toby MacGuire, which as you said... is probably what hurts them the most... not that he's a bad Spider-man... he does a great job... but... Spider-man vs. Jack Sparrow... there's no comparison in the character... Jack Sparrow (like you said) has an absurd edge.... much much much more likable, more lovable... more interesting...

I totally and completely respect your opinion though, and I like being able to indulge into conversation like this without it turning into a my word vs. your word argument/fight... like if you ever use the imdb.com's message board... people on there literally attack one another and its like... if you say something I don't like or agree with, then I'm gonna try and make you look and feel stupid... so I'm glad we avoided that...

Either way... both are going to be fantastic movies with fantastic opening weekends

Care to back up that statement?

The Spiderman movies are some of the best I've seen in a while. The put all other superhero movies to shame IMO. The scripts are good, the casting is good, the effects are good, and they are enjoyable. I forget that I'm watching a movie based on a comic book.

Batman Begins and Superman Returns have learned from Spiderman's example.

Call the Spiderman Franchise stupid if you want, but it has revolutionized the Superhero Movie Industry...

NO i dont want to back up my opinion, i just dont like spiderman jack sparrow is so much more amusing

Wait a minute... I must be behind with the times....

There's going to be a Shrek 3?? What possible plot could they have? What loose ends do they still have to tie up?

From comingsoon.net-
"When Shrek married Princess Fiona, becoming the next King and Queen of Far, Far Away wasn't part of the plan. So when his father-in-law, King Harold, falls ill, it is up to Shrek to find a suitable heir or he will be forced to give up his beloved swamp for the throne. Recruiting Donkey and Puss In Boots for a new quest, Shrek sets out to bring back the rightful heir to the throne, Fiona's rebellious cousin Artie. Back in Far, Far Away, Fiona's jilted Prince Charming storms the city with an army of fairy tale villains to seize the throne. But they have a surprise in store because Fiona, together with her mother, Queen Lillian, has drafted her fellow fairy tale heroines to defend their "happily ever afters." As Shrek, Donkey and Puss work on changing Artie from a royal pain in the you-know-what into a future king, Fiona and her band of princesses must stop Prince Charming to ensure there will be a kingdom left to rule. SHREK THE THIRD will include an elite, ninja-like strike force of fairy-tale princesses voiced by Amy Sedaris as Cinderella, Amy Poehler as Snow White, Maya Rudolph as Rapunzel and Cheri Oteri as Sleeping Beauty. Also joining the hit animated comedy's cast are Ian McShane as Captain Hook, John Krasinski as Sir Lancelot, Justin Timberlake as King Arthur, aka Artie and Monty Python veteran Eric Idle as Merlin the magician."

Sounds like another full assault on Disney.

The one thing that I think a lot of non-comic book followers don't understand is exactly how big Venom is the comic book/Spider-Man world. Just the thought of him being in the movie will draw rabid, crazy comic book fans out of the wood work to see him. I'll go opening day.. (even though I'm more excited about Sandman)...

Venom is the equivalent of what Darth Vader is to Star Wars. I wouldn't be surprised if Spidey 3 wasn't a cliff hanger leading into Spidey 4 where Venom and Spider-Man would finish what got started in 3. Though, I'm unaware of the number of picture contract that each of the main characters has and whether Toby would be interested in pursuing more Spider-Man movies.

As for why POTC2 blew Spider-Man out of the water, it's not always the super popularity contest that people believe it is. A lot of it actually deals with the number of screens that a movie opens on. The more screens means it's actually opening in more cities than it probably would normally, thus giving access to people who weren't really interested in travelling to the next closest theatre.

Here's an example....

- POTC2 - screens: 4133 - $55.8 million
- Star Wars Ep. 3 - screens: 3661 - $50 million (are we even discussing this if the theatre count is the same?)
- X-Men 3 - screens: 3690 - $45 million (it's not quite as popular as Star Wars though...so I guess you gotta give it credit for getting close)

I'm guessing Spidey 3 will open on more than the 4133 screens as will Shrek 3 and I'm sure Disney will push to have POTC3 open on more as well...The competition will be very stiff for POTC3 next summer and I don't see it doing the kind of numbers that this past one did. A lot of people aren't willing to see all 3...3 weeks in a row and I think most comic book fans will stick with Spidey and families will probably go with Shrek (ugh). Considering how much movies cost...I think the competition will hurt all 3.

I think Disney should push the date back...As it stands right now, there are 3 blockbusters coming out in May 2007. Save PotC 3 for June, and you increase revenue. Funny how they are all the third movie of each franchise...May 2007 has the potential to be the biggest month ever.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix comes out on July 7th. I'm not aware of anything in June...

Well, June is when Transformers opens. I personally don't see the reason for all of the hype behind it. I mean, come on, the toys were good for kids, but were stupid for adults, and to make things worse, its being directed by Micheal Bay, the biggest hack in Hollywood. Oh well, either way it would take away some of POTC3's intake. POTC would also have to cope with Ratatolee ( sp? ) which is one of Disney's own films ( although I'd rather that Disney pushed the release date for Ratatoulee back to November sometime. )

Some of the greatest movies of all time are over 2 hours long...

The Godfather... without any doubt the greatest movie ever made...
The Godfather II (no one mention III... it never happened)
Scarface
Braveheart
Gladiator
The LOTR (which won a bagillion awards)

the list is too long... but I can't believe someone would say 2 hours is their cut point...

I really just hate the whole "going to movies" thing, so if I have to sit in that theater for more than 90 minutes chances are I'm going to get really bored. I ended up turning off all of the LOTR movies before they ended, even though I loved the books and I really didn't care for the other movies on your list either. I'm really just not a movie buff, so I'd prefer to see something thats shorts and filled with entertainment.

THINK about that...

non-comic book followers... the number of comic-book followers that are out there is probably about 1/100 the size of people who appreciate Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow... its just not a large market... Yeah sure, a lot of people love these movies, but not a lot are comic-book followers...

so........ when you say "the one thing that i think a lot of non-comic books follows don't understand is exactly how big venom is in the comic book." He could be god for the sake of argument... it wouldn't make a difference because... about 90% of the people that will go see SM 3 won't be comic-book followers... and they'll be going to see the movie, not for venom sake... and the smallllllllllllll population that realize how big venom is... will not even come close to being enough to make up for the gap between it and what POTC 3 will likely open at...

I'm sure Spider-man will be good, especially with Evil Spider-man in this one. But I think Pirates might do better. I thought the ending was AWESOME! It leaves people wanting more and with only a year difference, people will return for the third. I didn't think the movie was confusing. I think people need to get the full experience and watch at home on DVD. It will be so much better that way. I bet the DVD will have something on Pirates 3 and encourage people to see it. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had enough confidence to release Pirates on the same day.

As far as the release date for Pirates, I believe that its the same day that the 5th Harry Potter movie is schedule to come out. I thought i read or heard somewhere that HP5 is coming out then so it could be the "summer blockbuster." So who would win-pirates or wizards?

NO NO NO. Harry Potter isn't releasing until July. Let's get this stait once and for all:

Spiderman 3 is releasing on May 4
Shrek 3 on May 18
Pirates 3 on May 25
Harry Potter 5 some time in July ( don't know exact date )

How can I say POTC 3 will blow SM 3 out of the water??? UNBELIEVABLY EASILY...

(minor... not extreme, very very suttle, but minor spoiler alert for POTC 2... just a warning...)

1. POTC 2 with 135 mil... that's ABSURD... on the top 100 list... the average is probably around... 50 mil... SM 1... not SM 2... but SM 1 is second now with 114... so... POTC 2 absolutely pulverized SM 1...
Spiderman 1 also opened how long ago? When ticket prices were lower and it wasn't a sequel.
2. SM2 only opened at 88 mil... You take the at the time number 1 opening movie and make a sequel of it... and it opens at 30 mil less... how is that promising for the third???
Spiderman 3 will do better for one reason. Venom. It will start the Venom storyline.
3. POTC 2 leaves a story for the third... POTC 2 is continued into the 3rd movie... meaning... the $134 mil worth of people who saw it on opening weekend WANT to see it again... will they all??? Who knows, but there is much more promise to have all people who went on opening weekend to POTC 2 to go on opening weekend for the third one...
Disagree with this one. Why? Because I really don't care to see the third one all that much. Personally, if I had a choice between the big three that month... Spiderman would win for me.
4. SM 3 is a new movie... new story... and I think it will open better than the second one did... but I don't think it will even top the first one... and if it does... still. 134 mil is absurd... it won't come close to that
Once again, Venom. Venom is considered by many to be the best villian of all time. People won't know that Venom isn't in this one and so will flock to the theaters to see him. And $134 million absurd? Please. Pirates did it... :animwink:
5. How does SM have a bigger audience if numbers prove otherwise? If it had a bigger audience, why did it's sequel post 88 and no 134??
Because the sequel wasn't as good as the first film. There was no real draw to the second because it was essentially identical to the first.
6. I think SM will do very very well... but you're forgetting one thing... anything over like 90 mil IS very very well... 134 is (once again) absurd... and it won't touch that... POTC 3 has the potential because of that fact that its predecessor did so well, and everyone who saw POTC 2 will want to see POTC 3 because it's a continuated story...
Like I said... you can't generalize that everyone will want to see number 3. People didn't want to see Matrix 3, and it was a continuation story. You have to realize that just because a movie does "absurdly" well, that doesn't mean its sequel will too.

In my honest opinion, Dead Man's Chest was far too similar to Matrix Reloaded for its own good.

So that is how I can say it will blow it out of the water...
And those are my feelings why it won't. It may beat it. But "blow it out of the water" won't happen.

are you serious buddy??? ARE YOU JOKING ME???

You cannot compare Matrix to POTC just because they were made the same way... fanbase is entirely different...

second... LOOK AT ONE OF YOUR POINTS!!!! "I disagree because I don't care to see the third movie" GREAT... that's $10 less than $134 mil... so thank you for coming out...

Thirdly... they update the list and do it by TICKET SALES x CURRENT AVERAGE TICKET PRICE... so yes, POTC 2 DID blow SM 1 out of the water...

Fourthly... you're first like 4 points were horribly made and poorly executed so I'm not gonna bother to finish anything else you have to say...

Like seriously... DO NOT argue points on a biased opinion... it makes you sound like an idiot... "I DON'T LIKE THIS MOVIE SO IT WILL DO BAD AND SPIDER-MAN IS WICKED COOL SO IT WILL DO GOOD!!!"

oh and by the way... WHO THE HECK CARES ABOUT VENOM?!!?!??!!?!?!?! 135 MIL WORTH OF PEOPLE?!?!?!!? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LEARN WHAT FANBASE MEANS BEFORE YOU ARGUE SOMETHING YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT 99% OF THE POPULATION DOES NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worst points ever... give me back the guy i was discussing with earlier who had valid points and didn't sound like a Red Sox fan trying to tell a Yankee fan that the yankees "suck" just because he doesn't like them (and I'm a diehard sox fan... but nothing kills me more than when i know people who try and say the yankees "suck")

that's how you sound

Movie-goers in general. A single fan-base aren't the only ones that go to the films. And the general theater-going public will far outnumber and "fanbase". Period.

You made a generalization. I refuted it. Is it really that hard to see?

Then where does Mary Poppins fit into all of this? Or Titanic? Those films had some "absurd" numbers to them also.
Fourthly... you're first like 4 points were horribly made and poorly executed so I'm not gonna bother to finish anything else you have to say...
Ooo... well, played. Like that makes you sound like a good debater.

You sound like a child who had their toy truck taken from them. You put words in my mouth and then completely ignored everything that I said simply because you didn't like it. Caps make you come off as an arrogant know-it-all, and trying to justify a metaphor with "and I'm one and I still hate..." doesn't really prove anything.

And one last thing... until we see the numbers from May 2007 we are not arguing "points", but instead assumptions and opinions. Those, by nature, are biased. Just like every other person in this thread who has said "I prefer Pirates so I think it will do better" that will be the nature of this discussion. Don't act like the board mediator just because you think you know all. It won't make you any friends.
