What are you talking about? Haven't seen the countless threads entitled Pirates Breaks Box Office Records?

Also, IMO: Shrek is not funny.

I might have been mistaken, that's why I asked. I thought PotC had the biggest OPENING DAY sales, and Spidey 2 had the biggest OPENING WEEKEND sales...So I take it that's not right?

How can I say POTC 3 will blow SM 3 out of the water??? UNBELIEVABLY EASILY...

(minor... not extreme, very very suttle, but minor spoiler alert for POTC 2... just a warning...)

1. POTC 2 with 135 mil... that's ABSURD... on the top 100 list... the average is probably around... 50 mil... SM 1... not SM 2... but SM 1 is second now with 114... so... POTC 2 absolutely pulverized SM 1...
2. SM2 only opened at 88 mil... You take the at the time number 1 opening movie and make a sequel of it... and it opens at 30 mil less... how is that promising for the third???
3. POTC 2 leaves a story for the third... POTC 2 is continued into the 3rd movie... meaning... the $134 mil worth of people who saw it on opening weekend WANT to see it again... will they all??? Who knows, but there is much more promise to have all people who went on opening weekend to POTC 2 to go on opening weekend for the third one...
4. SM 3 is a new movie... new story... and I think it will open better than the second one did... but I don't think it will even top the first one... and if it does... still. 134 mil is absurd... it won't come close to that
5. How does SM have a bigger audience if numbers prove otherwise? If it had a bigger audience, why did it's sequel post 88 and no 134??
6. I think SM will do very very well... but you're forgetting one thing... anything over like 90 mil IS very very well... 134 is (once again) absurd... and it won't touch that... POTC 3 has the potential because of that fact that its predecessor did so well, and everyone who saw POTC 2 will want to see POTC 3 because it's a continuated story...

So that is how I can say it will blow it out of the water...

If I had to choose I would pick Pirates 3 over Spidey 3. I like the spiderman movies, just not as much as Pirates. What movie will do better? I have no idea, but I am sure both will do VERY well.

Spiderman 3's official site states it's opening May 4, 2007.

There is no official PotC 3 site yet, but all net sources cite May 25th.

They will both be huge. But it's probably fair to say PotC 3 is going to be massive.

I am also employed in this area you refer to as "computer geek" and I also am much more excited about the next Pirates film than another Superhero flick, even if it is Spiderman. I am all burnt out on Superheroes. They make me feel . . . inadequate. At least pirates are just regular human folk that have a bit of luck.

uhh... fighting skeletons, breakin curses, cutting hearts out and keeping them in boxes, fighting giant sea monsters, having magical navigational equipment, becoming part of the ocean itself.... hardly counts are regular human folk...haha

I think Disney should push the date back...As it stands right now, there are 3 blockbusters coming out in May 2007. Save PotC 3 for June, and you increase revenue. Funny how they are all the third movie of each franchise...May 2007 has the potential to be the biggest month ever.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix comes out on July 7th. I'm not aware of anything in June...

I like PotC, but I don't understand it's popularity. Those Pirates are scary, I would think too much for kids, and I don't see how the plot does anything EXTRAORDINARY. Like, I plan to see PotC 2, but I didn't run to see it like I did with LOTR or Narnia or Titanic or Lion King or Saw or The Ring (a few of my faves). I just don't get it. :lookaroun

In what will most likely be the three biggest grossing films of next summer, SM3, Shrek3, and POTC3, POTC is slated to open last, and that is not good news for POTC fans and those that want to see it break POTC2's records. POTC2 greatly benefitted from Superman Returns underperforming at the box office, but the next closest blockbuster before Superman Returns was X-Men 3, which was either out of ever theater or only showing once a day by the time even Superman was released. Spiderman3 will still be running relatively strong even after its been released for 2 or 3 weeks, and Shrek3 is sure to be running strong in its 2nd week, both of which will hurt POTC3's numbers, as, unlike POTC2, it will have some competition.

I'd just see them both on the same day at a multiplex if that happened coz I'm really looking forward to them both.
Is Spidey really that far away still? :(

I thought both of the Spiderman movies were cool the second better than the first. I'm looking forward to the third but CAN'T WAIT for POTC 3. I will be seeing it before seeing Spiderman even if Spiderman opens before Pirates.

I thought the first Pirates was a little better than the second but probably because like most sequels the hype is always makes you hope for more. I never saw the first one in the theaters, which I'm sorry for, but have seen the second twice and hope to see it again soon. I'll be there opening weekend for the third one.

Anyone think Disney could pull a Star Wars and do three more revolving around Capt Jack's exploits leading up to POTC 1? Or would the fans miss Will and Elizabeth? If they do lets hope they are better than Star Wars 1 - 3, what a downer they were!

I know that Johnny Depp is willing to do more. Jack Sparrow is the only important character to me. Without Johnny Depp, PotC wouldn't have been near as successful, the man is a genious..

Seeing as how Disney is trying to milk every last penny out of the franchise right now, I wouldn't be suprised if they did more movies in the future.

You are not all burnt out on fairly tales and endless princesses, are you? I am sure they make you feel adequate.

I agree. I can't imagine these movies without Johnny Depp - I was trying to think what the movie would be like with other actors and just couldn't imagine.

Was JD the first person the producers thought of or does anyone know if there were others?

well, I'm not sure whether or not he was definitely their first choice; but I know he went to someone at Disney and said he wanted to do voiceovers, and he was informed of POTC and he wanted it badly... and got it...

Also, you may or may not know that he wasn't liked by the producers when the movie was being made... they didn't know if he was "gay" or "drunk," and did not like what he was doing. They wanted Jack Sparrow to be a tough, mean, scary pirate... that was their first image... but the director loved it... luckily

There probably never would have been a sequel if Jack Sparrow wasn't played by Depp... he did an unbelievable job with the role and he literally makes the movie...

If they did do like prequels... or more sequels... they wouldn't be as good I don't think, I'd see them, but... too much of anything isn't necessarily a good thing... ya know... as much as I absolutely LOVE Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow (probably favorite movie character ever)... you put him in 6 movies... its a little overused... you may disagree... just personal thoughts...

its kinda like with Entourage... if anyone watches it, they don't overuse Jeremy Piven's character because he makes the show what it is... he's the most exciting character, but if he gets overused... the series will go down because it will lose its "uniqueness"

this is one of the problems i had with the second pirates... i LOVE jack sparrow, obviously as indicated by by avatar and signature, but i too do not want him to be overused. i dont want it to become Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Carribean. depp has created an awesome character here, that is completely original and unique, but what made him so great in the first movie was that he wasnt the main focus but rather the scene stealer. in the second i feel that he was less of the scene stealer and more of just the scene. does that make sense? idk, i just love the movies and want them to suceed, i just dont want them to get worn out...
