Is it just me, or is this forum gradually slackening in terms of capitalization, spelling, punctuation and grammar? A few mistakes are OK, but some spell-checking doesn't take long and makes reading much easier on the eyes.

As reference, on the WDWMagic front page, I've found these mistakes in the titles alone:
  • DQ fire? (Unocnfirmed)
  • castle holiday lights
  • Mickey's Jammni Jungle goes Missing!!
  • I am surprised WDw Does not Do This
  • ok a lil help guys and gals
It is perhaps a very minor nitpick, and I mean no offense to the posters involved, but spell checking programs are included on Microsoft Word, Notepad, Wordpad and even the browser Mozilla Firefox. Please improve your grammar for the sake of this community.

DMC-12

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
:lol::lookaroun

also... OMG CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!!1!1!!

Another thing that irritates me is the excessive use of the exclamation point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!
Just one is good... two is ok... three is where I draw the line. Anymore than that.. and you have just labeled yourself as a Jr. High School attendee.:lookaroun

I know my spelling can be bad at times... and I do suffer from a bit of dyslexia... so I try to cut everyone a break. This place does NOT need the spelling police again. :lookaroun

Due to the amount of people using mobile devices to post, spelling mistakes occur. Hitting the wrong button, or in the wrong order can easily happen when the buttons are so close together. Like life these days, speed takes precedence over quality.

Others just may be horrible at grammar. This doesn't mean that they are uneducated, just lack proper grammar and spelling skills. My supervisor is one of the smartest people I know and can't spell worth a lick! Things like this come with the territory.

Sometimes it seems like the poster isn't even trying...which is wrong, but a spelling mistake here or there is fine.

el oh el :D

A couple of mistakes I don't mind here and there. But if there's a consistent lower case... or upper case... or only capitalizing the first letter of every word like a title... and a lot of other things , then I get pretty annoyed.

What can you do .. I have a bunch of pet peeves, especially when it comes to grammar and Internet lingo. But whatever, as long as you get the gist of what someone is saying, right?

^Can you imagine if that worked the same with resumes?

"Well, it would appear this man is borderline dyslexic... but I got the gist of his experience, so he's hired."

Jer, I highly doubt anyone in forum history has used more exclamation points over the years than you.

Anyway, grammar, spelling, and all of that stuff has always been bad on these forums. I think a big part of it is a lot of the posters are kids who spend WAY too much time on instant messenger and myspace and are used to speaking to each other like idiots.

If someone genuinely cannot spell properly, I won't hold it against them. Spelling really isn't everything in this world. My husband is one of the worst spellers and writers I've ever met, but he's one of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, a profession where spelling isn't important in the least.

Not everyone grows up to have a desk job. ;)

That is different than the MySpace/Instant Messenger language though. I think that nonsense is honestly rude and uncivilized.

Or older "kids" that have arthritis-affected hands and sometimes fumble on the keyboard...:)

There's a clear difference between an occasional typo and a whole different teenage internet language (which DMC-12 does a great impression of).

And for the record, the nitpicks the OP has do not bother me a bit and I think it's silly to criticize those particular mistakes.

THIS is the kind of spelling and language that I think is rude and uncivilized: http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=14810

Well, the Mickey's Jammni Jungle goes Missing!! realized their mistake...b/c it even says in the thread that oops...they spelled it wrong.

Also, I know I tend to capitalize every word in topics, I simply like the way it looks. Although I try not to spell things wrong, sometimes, it just happens. I say, cut people some slack, we are only human. However, if it's something that is absolutely eye offensive, like all caps or IM lingo or something, then yeah, that's annoying, but you get past it.

I agree...and you can always let someone know in a nice way that.."Hey..you spelled such and such wrong" or "Please try to not use so many !!!!!!!!! in a sentence" whether in the thread or in a pm.

I just hate when people make fun of someone because they spelled something wrong or used the wrong punctuation.

It happened recently in a thread on here and I was so mad that people were making fun of someone like they could not see what was being said..:(.

I have done that before and have made someone feel bad and it made me feel bad.:(

*Feel free to let me know if I spelled something wrong or used the wrong punctuation*:D

And then that person doesn't get their question answered because people are too busy ripping on how they spell. Yes, it can get annoying when you have to decipher things, but you either ignore the thread or you answer it. Maybe letting them know in a polite way that punctuation is encouraged here...but don't rip on them for 50 posts telling them what a screw up they are.

Edit: Oh, an interesting note...some people don't realize they have a problem until later in life. My brother went all through school without once being told he was dyslexic. He is...and has had no help for it. So now, he's dyslexic and he isn't getting it fixed. He went through 12 years of school without once getting it diagnosed. I'm sure there are more people out there just like him. Therefore, I guess it's a little easier for me to give slack to people for spelling and grammar errors.

Gee, that is a good example. I don't know how old the OP is, but if I had turned in a sentence like that in any class beyond the 4th grade the nuns would have broken my fingers. Maybe our educational standards have slipped a little since the jurasic period?

Anyway, while it is a little annoying to read something like that, I'd rather see the younger folks posting here than perusing other sites where they can get into trouble. There's been too many tragedies out there.

The only time I correct someone is when his/her spelling, grammar, and punctuation are so bad that the post is impossible to read or understand, including the use of text or IM "speak."

An overuse of emoticons also irritates me, and if I see someone using too many I might suggest that he/she limits them.

Oh, I don't mean that. I was referring to the ones who capitalize every word in their paragraphs.

Miles, I may have to use that nun comment later on this year... I have a feeling it'll be warranted.
