Spaceship in Spaceship Earth

I missed the graduation caps, but I got photos of the Space Station among other structural remnants. I would however like some clarification on what I’m looking at here. If I’m being honest I have only skimmed through this thread up until this point, so not entirely sure what everything I had been looking at was aside from what I assume to be the leftover structural remnants from 94’ View attachment 723639

Took me longer than I should have spent trying to figure out what I was looking at, but I think I got it. This is the lightning effect just before the graduation scene. In this video, it actually stops for about 30 seconds at this part so you can see the effect over and over again at 12:45.

Here is a quick overlay to show effect.

One of the stranger 1994 additions. Rockwork “caves” with slowly rotating metal poles on square bases. The poles had horizontal sticks with little lights on them

Thought this was neat, probably the best quality available to date of the Cronkite narration:

And this is why I loved Jeremy Irons' narration so much.
Cronkite is delivering with the same evening news gusto that he'd be reporting on the failure of a Senate Appropriations bill, whereas Irons' delivery is far more contemplative.

And Dame Judi's narration simply feels like she's talking down to you. It's like the scriptwriters told her that it needed to be on an elementary school level.

And it was beautiful when it worked, you felt like you were really traveling through a galaxy, now it's been turned off. It also had a little lightning strike in the back distance that was so cool. They wouldnt know how to create something like that today. Now they dont even know what to do with the space but leave it to the dust. Rotten.

Fascinating!! Very simplistic yet effective illusion with those metal poles. I had no idea what those formations were meant to represent but I can see what they were trying to achieve here. Although I don't expect anything to be salvaged in a future refurb someday, I can't help but wonder how much of this is still functional

They were still attempting to work last October.

And they were in such a state of disrepair they gave up? Just curious what happened since.

Also any word about the chariot projection? I had heard a cast member who works at SSE went up there and was playing with the projector and got it working but obviously couldn't just turn it on for the ride. Of course, that sounds like just a rumor to me.

When cast members check these old effects to see if they still function, do they have to get approval first? Or is it typically a “what the mouse doesn’t know won’t hurt me” situation?

Sometimes Imagineers go in and fix things themselves, that’s what happened with the Aging Man flipped projection error in the Haunted Mansion.

I believe Siemens was the one who requested the chariot projection being turned off in the first place. Now that they’re no longer the sponsor it would be nice to see it return.

My understanding is it was a senior Imagineer(probably Eric Jacobson) who thought it looked cheesy.

It can be both. Depends who’s doing it and when and the location (you wouldn’t do it at middday but you may have a look around third shift - that’s how I know ToTs sparking neon and boiler room mist systems still technically function)

This weekend I’m releasing my latest edit of the 1982 version. I’ve tweaked the audio a bit (still rough around the edges) and cleaned up some of the video. Using the latest found footage there’s a better representation of the computer area now. It’ll be at martinsvids.net and on YouTube at martinsvidsdotnet

I know it always seems the tendency to act like Dame Judi is speaking off the cuff, but she is indeed saying what the script writers told her too. Having grown up with "Cronkite" none of the following shows where ever as good.

Yeah I grew up with Irons so it's my number one, but I really think there's value in all 3 of the most popular versions.
